I am not able to open my trunk via fob, switch on the door nor remote. I have read this seems to be a common occurrence after rear light failures. My rear lights, headlights, and turning lights have all been replaced multiple times within the last few years. I went into the grocery store and when I attempted to open the trunk it wouldn't open. I have repeatedly tried again to no avail.

Left low beam headlamp failed at 78000 miles. I replaced the bulb, to no avail. Switched the bulb to the driver side and it worked perfectly. Put the suspected bad bulb in the driver side, worked perfectly. Did some research and learned that the passenger side dim headlight socket was the subject of a recall. Took the car to village vw in chattanooga. They refused to even look at the car, until I paid 99 dollars for a diagnosis fee, then parts and labor. I explained and re explained the recall. The refused to fix the car, since my VIN wasn't specifically listed in the recall. I am having the exact symptoms listed n the recall, vw is refusing to repair it. This is apparently a common problem considering all I have read. Many Passat owners have the same problem with the same light, and vw is refusing to repair the vehicles.

On two separate occasions the connector and wiring harness providing power to the driver's side and passenger's side headlights on the 2001 Volkswagen Passat GLS melted and the headlights failed. If I did not take immediate action the electrical short in these connectors may have triggered a fire. The driver's side socket/wiring harness melted and the wiring harness was replaced in October of 2004. The passenger's side socket/wiring harness melted and the wiring harness was replaced in April of 2007. While at the Volkswagen dealership to have passenger side wiring harness replaced I observed another Passat owner complaining of the same problem. A google search on the internet resulted in finding many other people that had this potentially dangerous problem as well.

Consumer complained about ignition switch and headlights problems. While driving on a winding road the headlights just turned off, and consumer would have to wiggle the ignition to get the lights to turn back on. Currently, manufacturer was recalling vehicles with this defect. However, because this vehicle had an excess of 125,000 miles it was 25,000 miles past the cut off point. Also, headlights will sometimes go out while driving. Dealer replaced ignition switch. Consumer felt that this problem should be a definitive recall without mileage limitations.
