The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that the steering column locks up on her vehicle and prevents it from being driven. She attempted to start the engine and an indicator illuminated, which stated that the steering column was locked. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the steering column was defective and needed a module. The repair would cost $1,300. The failure mileage was 63,000. Updated 05/27/09 updated 06/08/09 updated 6/16/09 the left rear caliper needed to be replaced,the check engine light illuminated, the transmission was making a loud noise, the tire pressure light illuminated, the left turn signal did not work, the left wheel bearing needed to be replaced, the hood release lever inside the vehicle was inoperative. 2 Front Suspension Wheel Bearing problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 12/28/2001

1) coolant temp. Sensor failed at @47422 miles 2) chaplins checked car because I reported noise in front wheel area. They said both front wheel bearings needed replacing and refused to cover the costs. I took it to an independant vw specialist and was told only the right front wheel bearing was bad. Cost was $466. 79. Vw still refused to assist. 2 independant vw specialists reported vw has a "bad wheel bearing design". 3) replaced original tires with exact brand and style of tire that was originsal to car. Tires felt odd, I had them checked by 2 tire retailers and did own pressure checks twice monthly. After 15,804 miles on tires left rear tread separated from sidewall while driving on freeway at 70mph.

When turning wheel there was noise at the front of vehicle, dealer determined that the bushings needed to be replaced. . Consumer states he replaced the tie rod end.
