The contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Passat. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for a recall repair. The technician discovered that the cv boot on the front driver and passenger wheels were cracked. The technician strongly advised that the failures be repaired to avoid further damages within the suspension system. The estimated repair cost was $700. The vehicle has not been repaired. The VIN was unknown. The failure and current mileages were 32,000.

Car went in for brake job at 39,000 miles. Mechanic found that both front cv joints were cracked and front axles and cv boots would need replacement. This was close to a $1,000. 00 repair job on a car with under 40,000 miles. Apparently this is a not uncommon problem with 5th generation Passat vehicles. I feel Volkswagen should do a recall on this problem.
The contact's son owns a 1999 Volkswagen Passat. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact's son heard metal rubbing near the front end of the vehicle. The contact stated that the front suspension was loose. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and they replaced the upper and lower links. The purchase date was unknown. The current mileage was 94,490 and failure mileage was 89,000.

The squeaking and creaking of the front end of my vw Passat 2001 is horrendous. My local vw and the vw of a have done nothing to remedy the situation and, regardless of the increasing number of complaints and increasing problems in controlling the car, are asking for approximately $1500 to "fix" the problem.

On 7/13/06 I purchased a new 2006 vw Passat from bert smith vw in st. Petersburg, florida. I took delivery at 5pm on Friday 7/14/2006. I have 4 major problems. Bert smith vw service person (noel aponte and his service manager michael) and they say that they have never heard of the below issues. First issue: I have extreme idle shaking of the engine. This is constant - meaning you would have to turn off the ignition to stop it. I can shift the transmission into neutral and still feel the shaking. I can put the gear in park or in drive and it is still shaking. Sometimes the shaking is mild (like the shaking while braking) other times it is severe. . . So severe you can see the entire car shake. Second major issue: I drive my car of a parked position (or after coming to a rolling stop at a light) and the car feels like it is trying to pull or lunge forward while my foot was previously on the brake. At this time I have to put extreme pressure on the brakes to keep it from moving forward. The light turns green and I am off. I come to another light, the same thing happens. Regarding these 2 issues, here is a threaded discussion on the website vwvortex. Com. . Read more...

Upon receipt of the vehicle from the dealership, a shuttering or vibration has been noticed between 65 and 80 mph. Original diagnostic efforts yielded a confirmation of the behavior from the dealership, but no solution. I brought the vehicle home and noticed that the lug bolts were not torqued appropriately. Tightening down the wheels improved the shaking for a short period of time, but the behavior returned within 24 hours. Subsequent diagnostic efforts by the dealership have yielded only a "minor vibration at speed" description with no proposed resolution.

On August 25 onwer was upset because he had to replace tie rods, and had the vehicle aligned. He said the tie rods had to be replaced becuase they were frozen. The repair shop replaced the tie rods.
I own a 1999 vw Passat wagon. There have been some recalls about the front end. I did have it checked at least twice by my dealer who said everything was ok. As I was nearing my home today at about 25 mph the right front wheel suddenly collapsed upward into the wheel well and the car started skidding on the right side of the frame off to the right side of the road. Because I was going rather slow I was able to correct it and stop it before it went off the road. If I had been going 65-70 next to other cars on the interstate or even 40 on a two lane around town I'm sure things would not have been quite so benign and we (my family and I) may all have been injured or worse! when the wrecker lifted it the driver and I both looked at the a arm and the ends were cracked or sheared off. I did not hit anything before it happened, and did not hit anything while I have had the car. Even if I had it would seem that the inspection by the dealer should have found it. This seems like a manufacturerer problem and it is way too serious to say they weren't responsible. There could easily have been a death connected with the front wheel collapsing when you consider lost of control at highway speeds!.
Groaning and moaning noise emanating from the front of the car when turning.

Over the past couple of years I have noticed various noises coming from the front end of my vehicle. Upon inspection, no problems were noted by the service centers I took the vehcile to. However, the steering control on the vehicle has suddenly gotten very bad. After taking the vehicle to a service center, they told me both of the tie-rod ends in my 2000 vw Passat have failed at 100,000 miles. Both of the front wheels have a huge amount of "play" in them which leads to the car being difficult to control, especially at highway speeds. I have owned many cars and it is very unusual to have these critical parts go bad in a vehicle this early. The estimate for the repair work was well over $500. I have gotten numerous second opinions, and all have come to the same conclusion: the tie-rods are bad. All of them also tell me they have seen this failure on these vehicles before and not on any other vehicles and that it seems to be a defect in the design. As of yet, I have not had the vehcile repaired but I hope to do so soon.
Front suspension creaks constantly while driving car. This appears to be common complaint by other owners, but Volkswagen (vw) unwilling to admit that parts are wearing too soon. Creaking started at about 45,000 miles. From other postings it appears that this will cost me at least $1,000 to repair. I am afraid to take car the vw for repairs, because of high cost. I hope this problem is not dangerous.
The 1999 Passat has had a number of problems from excessive oil consumption, electrical problems, water pump defects, front end assembly and transmission problems. (nar).
I took my car to jim ellis Volkswagen of atlanta to get the tie rods replaced as part of the recall campaign on my 98 Volkswagen Passat. The dealer tells me that this work has already been marked as completed in their system by another dealer . I have never taken my car to the other dealer. Please advice.

Sypmtoms are creaking, groaning from front suspension.

The handling of the vehicle became erratic and noisy. The dealership informed me that this was a common problem with these vehicles and with audis on the same (b5) platform. I cannot believe if this is as serious a safety issue as I was led to believe, that there has not been a recall on these parts or a redesign.
Several suspension components have required replacement within 70,000 miles. None have yet been catastrophic. But possibly because as a car guy I am able to detect them early.
Front end/engine protector has separated from vehicle while driving. In both cases, the turn bolts on the left front and right side separated. A single central screw bolt at it's front then supported the air dam. The plastic around it finally tore under vibration and air pressure forces.

I have knowledge of these parts failing on at least 100 vw Passats 1998-2001. I'm sure there are more. There should definitely be a recall or redesign parts made and substituted.
Being a member of a vw Passat forum, I know many other owners with the same failure. No safety defect.
Consumer went to the dealership due to steering/suspension alignment problems, the dealership performed recall service without proper authorization which cost the consumer additional money and repair work, consumer is very unsatisfied with the performance of the dealership while repairing vehicle and request assistance.
There is a noise in front, underneath vehicle while wheels are in motion. Dealership is aware of problem.
Known issue with vwoa, also happens on Audi a4/a6. Vw refuses to repair problem, but they have a repair kit for the caontrol arms, bushings and ball-joints.
No description given. Nlm.
Cost of repairs = $729. 08. No safety defect mentioned.
When coming down a hill or stopping hard sounds like front of car is going to collapse.
There is a creaking sound when turning wheel in both directions. Consumer states that the creaks are also happening when going over bumps.
Dealer has failed several times to correct steering problem. Car has constant vibration and steering wheel shake on turns. Front end aligned (not needed) wheels balanced and rotated (at my expense) without problem correction. Sunroof leaks. Driver's power seat moves when coming to a full stop. Dealer states this is ok.
Sun roof leaks - drains cleaned by dealer twice - still leaking. Driver's seat back moves forward when brake applied. Dealer claims this is normal. Seat back can be moved by hand. Car has vibration and steering wheel shakes at most speeds. Dealer claims tires are the problem. However, tires have been inspected twice (at my expense) by independent dealers who state tires are o. K. Wheels rebalanced, front end aligned, (all at my expense) and proplem persists. Vw refuses to help claiming problem is related to tires.
This issue was a recall for all Audi a-4's (same as vw Passat) as well as for many Passats. My VIN number did not fall into the recall #'s. Will soon, I feel constitute a danger on the roadways.
The front suspension problem has happened to many Passat owners, vw has failed to issue a recall. This is a clear workmanship failure and should be covered under warranty or recall. Many complaints have been made to vw and no resolve has been taken.
Very common problem. Suggest investigation/recall. No safety defect listed.
