5 Fuel Hoses Lines/piping And Fittings problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/03/2011

The contact owns a 2001 Volkswagen Passat. The contact received notification that her vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign id number: 08v156000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery) and the vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs. The dealer inspected and adjusted the fuel line routing as well as the fuel tank ventilation valve but did not replace any components. After repairs, the vehicle began spraying fuel onto the engine and was causing overpowering gasoline fumes to emit through the defogger system. The dealer was contacted who informed her that they made repairs to the vehicle under the recall and they only had to inspect the failure. The contact was advised that any further repairs would be at her expense. The manufacturer was contacted who confirmed that the dealer repaired the exact components listed under recall and nothing more. They offered no further other assistance. The failure mileage was 137,000.

6 Fuel Hoses Lines/piping And Fittings problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/23/2010

I own a 2002 Volkswagen Passat. It has stalled while driving and unable to start right away. It sometimes fails to start when I get in, then starts again later. The fuel pump/fuel line failure has left me stranded in the middle of the road on several occasions and I have also been stranded, while waiting for my car to start again. I believe there is a recall for this problem and I would like to know what I can do about it in order to remedy this issue w/ my 2002 Passat.

7 Fuel Hoses Lines/piping And Fittings problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

2004 vw Passat 4-motion wagon with 1. 8t engine. Top of fuel tank is leaking at the point where a breather hose connects (which is under the left rear seat). Replaced breather hose. Gas continues to leak out. The connection point itself is cracked and a new fuel tank is required. This must be a design flaw or defect. The car has little over 71,000 miles. Car is out of warranty. I am original owner. No unusual or hard impacts to the car (it has only scrapes from anonymous, unscrupulous bad drivers in parking lots). Vw of America refuses to cover the cost for replacement (conversation with customer care department representative "nina" on July 6, 2010). This is a very dangerous defect or flaw. Raw gas should not spill out of car -- particularly in this location, under a passenger's seat. Volkswagen should post a recall and replace this part with a safer tank.

10 Fuel Hoses Lines/piping And Fittings problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/25/2009

Kept smelling gas threw the vents, strong odor of gas wherever it was parked when you approached or got down from the vehicle. The last few times before the fuel line snapped there were small puddles of gas underneath the front passenger side tire when one drove away from a parked position. When I noticed the puddles I opened the hood and realized that one of the fuel lines had snapped, went to the auto parts store and bought rubber fuel line and clamps to temporarily patch the leak. Still smelling strong gas order even though does not seem like line is still leaking but cannot get it to the mechanic again until the weekend.

The fuel line on my 2000 Volkswagen Passat simply broke as I was driving. I don't know how it occurred. The fuel line was repaired at a Volkswagen dealership in glastonbury, CT. I am filing this complaint because I am not getting a satisfactory answer to why this problem is not being handled through a recall earlier this year of 412,000 1999-2005 Passats and the possibility that others are having the same problem.

15 Fuel Hoses Lines/piping And Fittings problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/10/2008

After a gas fill in February 2008 a strong odor of gasoline was evident. Upon inspection, it was noted that gas was leaking onto the pavement under the car. The problem seemed to resolve itself after about 1/4 tank of gas was burned. After the next fill, the problem recurred. The dealership determined that a sending unit had failed, which was replaced. Again the problem recurred upon filling the gas tank. The dealership then determined that there was a broken vent on the fuel tank causing the leak which required a replacement tank. During all of this there was never a warning light that would alert to the problem.

21 Fuel Hoses Lines/piping And Fittings problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/12/2007

My 2002 Volkswagen Passat developed a major fuel line leak inside the engine compartment. A metal high pressure fuel line that is mounted to the firewall either cracked or somehow blew a hole in the line. A high pressure stream of gasoline was being sprayed directly on top of the engine. This gasoline eruption as I will call it because the word leak is inadequate to describe the amount of gasoline that was spraying out of the hose in a location that is directly adjacent to a fuel line mounting bracket on the firewall. It is very visible in the photos I took. Ak when I opened the hood of the vehicle I found a gasoline mist had covered the entire inside of the engine compartment. The leak was so bad I initially parked the vehicle in my garage but could smell the gasoline inside my home so I had to move it outside. The next day I had a dealer look at. He informed of he found the leak, I came into see the leak before he repaired it, he started the vehicle with the hood open and within seconds the top of the engine had gasoline spilling on top of it. I took some photographs that clearly show the spray of gasoline onto the engine. I requested that the dealer save the fuel lines that he removed from my vehicle, so I now have those at my home. I would be happy to supply these failed components as well as send in the photos. I contacted Volkswagen regarding this incident and they expressed no interest in taking this opportunity to learn what could cause this major fuel line leak. They have not yet called the dealer to learn more about the repair, and they were not interested in me sending them the failed fuel line parts. I am appalled at Volkswagen's lack of concern over this issue. I feel very strongly that safety needs to be a top concern for auto manufacturers and I do not believe that Volkswagen is giving this incident the appropriate attention. Please investigate this, I will be more than willing to assist in any way I can.

25 Fuel Hoses Lines/piping And Fittings problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/15/2004

While backing up out of a parking spot in July of 2004, I began to smell gas very strongly in the cabin of my 2000 v6 Passat and immediately stopped and got out to see what was causing the smell. For unknown reasons, the car was randomly and visibly leaking gasoline onto the ground just in front of the fuel filter on the passenger side. It leaked gasoline in puddles and the engine began running 'lean' almost immediately, with significant valve clatter. Due to the serious safety risk posed by the profuse gasoline leak, I immediately turned off the car and had it towed to a reputable vw dealer in a nearby town. Upon inspection at the dealer, the fuel line had clearly split on the top side just in front of the fuel filter. . . . For no apparent reason. I submitted a complaint and a reimbursement request to Volkswagen of America re. This issue, due to the significant safety risk and repair cost created by the fuel leak. Unfortunately, vw ultimately refused to stand by their product citing the age and mileage of the car. At the time, the car was 3 years old and had just over 55k miles. I paid over $700 to have the line replaced, plus towing fees, and vw provided exactly $0 in reimbursement. This episode is on record with vwoa and with martens vw in bethesda, MD. Feel free to contact me or vw directly for more details.
