Steering Rod Relay Connection Problems of Volkswagen Passat

The contact owns a 1999 Volkswagen Passat. The vehicle failed inspection due to the tie rods. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the tie rods were replaced. The contact stated that the steering was loose. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA recall # 00v414000 nor # 99v248000 (steering:linkages:rod:relay:connecting). The current mileage is 63,000 and failure mileage was 62,800.

My 2000 vw Passat, with 38,000 miles, has worn tie rods to the point where I have been advised it could be dangerous to drive. This problem was discovered when the car was having an oil change and I mentioned I had been hearing creaking sounds from the front while doing 3 point turns over the past month. My mechanic (not a dealer) thought there had been a recall for the problem. Upon checking, the recall was for 1999 Passats only. Since the 2000 model is the exactly the same as the 1999 model, why was this recall not extended to the 2000 cars? I now have to replace the tie rods at my own expense. Please note the service action issued by vw in November 2004 did not include the tie rods.

The control arms, tie rod, and one cv boot failed. The consumer received recall notice for 1999 vw Passat after repairs were done. The consumer requested reimbursement. The consumer claim for reimbursement was denied. The manufacturer stated the consumer did not have the necessary maintenance performed when required.

Grinding sound while turning steering wheel. Was told that boots on tie rod ends were perforated allowing water and dirt to damage tie rod ends. Altho Volkswagen has issued a recall they refuse to make the free repair. Recall # recallul. Sep 99. Tie rod end replacement. Nhtsa recall # 0014/vwoa. Recall # ul/kw. Did not recieve any recall notice on this item! found on internet.

The consumer received a recall regarding the tie rod ends (recall #99v248000) the vehicle was looked at a 53,000, however the dealer informed the consumer there was no problem. At 60,000 miles the mechanic stated the tie rods were so worn that he considered the vehicle unsafe to drive, even though there was a recall, the manufacturer refused to honor the recall.

The vehicle experienced the same problem as stated in recall 99 v 248 000, however the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall.

Problems with left side upper control arms link, sway bar links and lower control arm. Also the tie rod ends were replaced, there was a recall regarding the issue, however the consumer's vehicle was not affected.

Consumer disappointed with denial for reimbursement of repairs on 2004 vw-passat control arm. Recall campaign; NHTSA campaign id number : 99v248000. The consumer made repairs to the vehicle for a defective steering and control mechanisms. The consumer was denied reimbursement because she did not provide proof of the 40,000 mile maintenance.

Vehicle experienced failure of the control arm which broke causing damage to vehicle, prior to incident vehicle was inspected for noise, no repair made at that time, recall campaign (99v-248)was not completed, which would possibly have prevented the incident.

The vehicle experienced the same defect with its tie rods as stated in recalls 99v248000 and 00v414000, but the vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN.

Brake booster vacuum and tie rod on recalls,but recalls repairs were not completed on appointment day because parts were not available. (99v-131 and 99v-248) yh.

Recall letter for replacement of tie rods on 1999 Volkswagen Passat. The front end of the vehicle squeaked. The technician found lower and upper control arm damage, the control arm boots were torn open with no lubrication which caused the squeak noise. There was also a cam shaft tensioner gasket leak which was removed and replaced. . The consumer took the vehicle to have the rods replaced after receiving the recall, however, the dealer called the consumer back and informed him, the vehicle had been inspected and it was not necessary for the work to be done, even though the recall letter stated it they would be replaced to prevent future problems.

Once the steering wheel was turned, a tapping/rattling sound could be heard. The noise was caused by the problem described in the tie rod recall 00v414000, but the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall.

The consumer experienced problems with the steering. The tie rods were going bad and the mfr was calling for a recall for this problem, however the owner was told that the VIN# was not included.
