The drain coming down from the sunroof apparently became clogged causing this vehicle to short out. . . Horn blowing, alarm system going off, etc. The waterproof black box, which is underneath the drivers seat, was full of water and the comfort control box was all burned. The drivers side floor is soaking wet and we have been trying to dry it out for 6 days now. We are very concerned that this could have caused a fire while our daughter was driving her car. Please advise. . . . .

The plastic clips holding the window in place broke and window falls down. It costs $350 to replace the $1. 50 cheap plastic part.
There are severe toxic odor's (voc's) coming from the bottom of the carpet insulation of the interior if the car. It is so potent that I have sore throats , heqadaches and feel light headed during and after I drive the 2006 valkswagon Passat. This odor/voc has almost caused me to faint due to the severe alergic reaction I have to it. I have to have all windows open to even drive the automobile. After seacrhing the internet under "volkswagon crayon smell" there are hundreds are similiar complaints about volkswagon cars where they have found the interior sound insulation mat under the carper floor to be the cause. I need my car and I can't drive it like this as it is unsafe for my health and I fear this "crayon odor" could cause me to have a car accident. I have tried to enlist vw America and they state they are not aware of the issue , however, there are hundreds, if not thousand complaints that they have received from this toxic odor that is coming into the passenger cabin of their cars especially the 2006 Passat. This toxic crayon odor is present at all times , it is not dependent on the car running (being on) what so ever. . Please help!!!.

I recently purchased a 2010 vw Passat which has a chrome bezel around the shifter. The chrome bezel reflects light into the drivers eyes when the sun is directly over head blinding the driver during vehicle operation. I contacted the vw help desk about 10 days and filed a complaint. I received a phone call from vw yesterday and they told me not enough people have complained about this problem. I have also contacted the dealership who seemed to be pretty receptive in getting this matter resolved. They ordered a new black on black shifter which was the only other replacement part and it is the same one that I currently have. Please contact me for I have several photos which demonstrate this potentially deadly design flaw.

I am writing you to ask for your assistance in expediting the repair or repurchase by Volkswagen of America of the 2007 Passat VIN [xxx] owned by my company, the lunt marymor CO. , inc. . This vehicle has a moldy smell that is persistent and is a likely health hazard. When anyone gets into the car they start to cough. The car is not drivable and unsellable. The moldy condition is a result of plugging of both the a/c drain system and the skylight drains. The oakland Volkswagen repair dept, lead by lee molinoni, has worked diligently to correct the problem without success. They've told me they don't know of anything else they can do to solve the problem. If it cant be fixed I am deprived of its use. I did not create this problem. While you have ready access to all the svc records at oakland Volkswagen allow me to share with you a brief history of the problem. The moldy smell started in may of this year. The problem was promptly diagnosed by oakland Volkswagen as a plugged a/c drain. The drain was cleared and the a/c ducting system was treated by a machine designed to clean the ducts. The machine broke without completing the treatment and a new machine had to be ordered. This took a considerable amount of time to get and I had to drive a moldy car while oakland Volkswagen waited for it to arrive. On returning to the dealer, when the new machine arrived, the ducts were cleaned but it was discovered that several valve operated ducts had failed. This required removal of the entire dashboard to repair. The dealership subsequently thoroughly cleaned the car. The moldy smell persisted. My wife and I thoroughly cleaned the entire interior of the car to no avail. I took the car back to the dealership where they then found 3 of 4 skylight drains were plugged. These were cleared. In the course of all these visits the mechanic also found a faulty brake module (the prkg brake wouldn't release) and a failed battery. The dealer. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

I purchased an 03 vw Passat from a vw dealer as a certified pre-owned vehicle back in 2/07. Within the first week of purchase I had brake problems. The next couple years were followed by valve cover leaks, engine leaks, auto window problems, battery problems, recall issues, water intrusion issues, ignition coil recall and the list goes on. After a water intrusion just days after the replacement of faulty ignition coils I contacted the manufacture notifying them of the problems. The manufacture had held their foot to the ground that my car is out of warranty (that I was told at time of sale I did not have) and so they are able to do nothing about any of the problems with this vehicle. However as it stands I have nearly $3000 in repairs needed to this vehicle. Not to mention the water leak/damage from what I understand may actually mean my vehicle is considered a total loss at this point. I have expressed to the manufacture that I am concerned for the safety of myself but my small children as well ever time we are in this vehicle. Among the several things that are potential to occur while I am driving I also worry about the potential for mold exposure from the water damage. Due to cost I am unable to get any of this corrected and can not afford to go thru my insurance only to be told that it is a manufacture issue and so I am stuck. I feel that at this point I am driving around in a safety hazard and don't know what to do. Every time I receive a replay from anyone I just end up back at the same place. . . . Contact the bbb, etc. I am getting no where and don't know what to do therefore am looking into any and all resources so any information would be useful. Thank you for your time.

During heavy rains, water entered the vehicle through the sunroof, which was properly closed and latched. Owner did not know that water infiltration had occurred. Upon driving the car after the storm, multiple warnings appeared. Car shuttered and would not shift gears. Eventually car shifted into drive. Took car to service station, which diagnosed that water had entered vehicle and pooled in passenger floorboard. Transmission module located beneath passenger floorboard flooded and failed. Transmission module and related components had to be replaced. We contacted manufacturer of vehicle and were told this was not a known problem, but information obtained by our insurance company indicates otherwise.

2005 Passat wagon - 38000 miles blocked drains around the sunroof caused rain water to leak into the floor boards of the car. The build-up of water caused the tcm (transmission control module) to malfunction. The (automatic) car was able to be driven only with hard shifts between gears and now will not move out of park. (undrivable). Replacement of the tcm will cost $3210. The car was a garaged car up until a few months ago. It was at the dealership for all scheduled maintenance. I was told by the dealership that the drain tubes can get clogged with "one leaf" and the next rain can cause this problem. I was advised to park in a covered area and never drive in the rain. This seems like a significant design flaw that one leaf followed by any rain can cause the tcm to fail and need replacing.
My 2001 "new" Passat GLS v6 has been flooding every time there is rain and it soaks the driver footwell as well as the same side's rear passenger foot well. It's created a moldy unpleasant odor in the car that I'm concerned will sicken my family and me.

The contact owns a 2001 Volkswagen Passat. The contact noticed that the floor carpet behind the driver's seat became damp during rainy conditions. She took the vehicle to the dealer for another recall issue and they repaired the water leakage for free. However, the failure still occurred and the dealer charged $196 for the second repair. The manufacturer has not been notified. The current mileage was 89,210 and failure mileage was 88,647.
Dec 12th 2008 the interior of my passt was flooded with water, vw service removed 10 + gallons of water which entered from air plenum /pollen filter hosing(cabin area). Service informed me of the p9 recall for the Passats manufactured Nov '00 to Dec '05. But, vw of America will not help me they said my VIN # is not in the recall. The computers are on the floor of car. Air bag is in default damage from electrical damage from water damage. . My trans mod is wrecked from the water damage, just the part alone will cost $1,300. I have lost work and can not drive. The make of car & year is in recall so why is my VIN not included?! someone please, please help me.
My 2003 Volkswagen Passat is holding 6inches or more of water on the passenger side in the floor board and has shorted out the computer underneath, in servicing the car the technician advised he found 3 other Volkswagen Passats of the same year to have the same defect. I have also been advised that a serious crash could have resulted because the computer underneath regulates the transmission.
1. Front and rear brakes inadequate for vehicle--had to have brake work at ~20,000 miles and again at just under 42,000 miles (this has never been a problem with any other car). Brakes repaired/parts replaced twice. Car should be recalled by manufacturer for brakes 2. Sunroof +/- windshield drain(s) became blocked and leaked and flooded passenger footwells, with risk of damage to transmission. This is a manufacturing defect with this make and model and has been widely reported on the web. Vw needs to recall cars for the problem with blocked drains/leakage and damage to vehicles. Cost to vacuum water out of footwells below the carpet > $600 with no guarantee that problem will not recur 3. Vw Passat has a known problem with sludge build up in engine and consequent engine failure--I have not (?yet) had the problem but feel that vw guarantee to repair problem only if owner can prove oil changes every 3000 miles in an unreasonable abnegation of duty. This is a design flaw and the company should have to recall all cars with the problem and repair at no charge without being able to shift blame to consumer. Now having to use expensive synthetic oil for oil changes on a very frequent basis.
I was driving and looked over to see smoke rolling up from my center console/arm rest I lifted up the arm rest and saw the smoke coming from the front end. I put my hand over it which stopped the smoke and I drove to the dealership. The only thing near it was 2 bottles of water.
Water leaked in to the passenger compartment of the vw Passat. The transmission electronic controls are located under the floor mat of the passenger side of the auto. The water shorted out the electronics for the transmission disabling the vehicle. A vw dealer repaired the Passat by replacing the electronics at a cost of $2250. 00 to us. They also modified the air intake to prevent future damage. This was the second time we had the auto in for cabin water. The service rep. Told me there is a problem with the cabin air intake and this was replaced under a recall on the 2000, 2001 and 2002 years of the Passat. He tried vw for warranty but they declined.
The distance between the acceleration pedal and the brake pedal seems much shorter than in other cars (ie, my Toyota camry). . . I will not drive our Passat 2006 2. 0t because there have been instances when my tennis shoe has hit both pedals in the attempt to apply the brakes. This must be a continuation of the audi5000 "sudden acceleration" problems of the early 1980's?,,,,,,.
I have a 2003 vw Passat. I've had two leaks into the front right floorboard in the past six months from either a sunroof drain line or a air conditioner. The leaks have produced so much water that it has gone to right back floorboard. The plastic on the interior is worn off. The ashtray fell apart. They can't seem to get the alignment right so I keep going through tires and the tires I do have sound uneven when I rotate them, making me think there's a problem. Hove replaced the headlights three times in 1 and 1/2 years. There's a defect investigation into fires in the engine and a recall on oil sludge. This car is an accident waiting to happen and it's very poorly engineered. One thing after another. Vw has on a bunch of recalls already on this model, to many for me to feel safe with. I'm abandoning the car today, trading it in for something else. Will never buy a vw again. No car should have this many issues. And the issues continue to roll in. Now the airbag light just came on. . . Another thing to have to worry about!!!.
My 2003 vw Passat wagon flooded during a rainstorm because the pollen filter seal failed. Furthermore, because the comfort control module computer is mounted on the floor, that was damaged and the bill is significant. My dealer's service department rep (boston vw) told me that he recommends cleaning leaves off the car 2 to 3 times per day in order to prevent this problem. That seems like an unreasonable maintenance requirement to prevent an issue that I've never seen previously with other cars.
On or about 2002 I have been complaining to Volkswagen about my 2002 Volkswagen Passat. Whenever it rain the back floor on the passenger side of my car have water in it. While my car was under warranty I carried my car into the Volkswagen dealership to have them fix the problem and they never fixed my car. When my warranty ran out I still complained to the dealership and to customer service at Volkswagen and nothing was done. I also told Volkswagen customer service that I believed that Volkswagen had sold me a lemon but Volkswagen customer service would not do anything about the problem. Year 2007 Volkswagen USA sent me a recall notice about the problem with the sun roof on my 2002 Volkswagen Passat, they (Volkswagen) stated that a recall on the sun roof had been recalled, and to take it to a Volkswagen dealer for repairs. I took my car to the dealer for the recall and I am still having problem with my car. As of now I have rust damage on the floor of my car and I believe that Volkswagen USA should do something about this problem that I have had since 2002, and I am still having since Volkswagen USA did the recall. I have repeatedly called Volkswagen customer service and they won't do anything about this problem. I am hoping and praying that this message is read by someone who will take the time out of there busy day and help me with this problem. If I decide to sell me car the problem won't go away some person who ever it is will end up with the same problem that I have had since 2002 and that's not right. I believe that Volkswagen USA should be held liable and responsible for this problem not just to sell this car and pass the problem on to some innocent person who might end up buying this car. Please help me Volkswagen recall on this car was October 2007.
2002 Passat began thumping and lurching while in motion and while idling. Check engine light came on. Acceleration was abnormally slow. Three inches of standing water appeared in right rear footwell. Dealer informed me acceleration problem was due to water in tcm. Tcm short circuited and then powertrain dropped. Water damage was due to leaking pollen filter seal, which was subject to p9 recall. Car was past warranty on time, but not miles. They fixed pollen filter seal and told me they couldn't do anything about the $4,000-$5000 damage from the leaking water. The car is not safe to drive. My car is parked outside. We had several rainy days in the week before the problem. The service manager suggested I must have left the window open. I contacted vw corp and they suggested I take it to a dealer for repair at my own expense.
Heat shield is held by plastic screws which easily become damaged, fall off, or are not replaced after service. Heat shield which protects the bottom side of the engine from rocks and other debris, came off on the interstate. The front of it was scraping the pavement. I had part replaced for $287. 82. Now Volkswagen of America, inc has issued a recall for this part, but only for the gasoline version. Since I own a tdi, I am out of luck. It is the same model and year.

I have a 2003 vw Passat and am original owner. I've had three leaks into the front right floorboard in the past six months from either a sunroof drain line or a air conditioner, depending on the repair person you talk to. The leaks have occasionally produced so much water that it has gone to right back floorboard. My trunk hinges are broken. My hood lids are broken. The plastic on the interior is worn off. The ashtray in back fell apart. They can't seem to get the alignment right so I keep going through tires and the tires I do have sound uneven when I rotate them, making me think there's a problem. Now my brake lights are out. It's not a fuse but apparently a switch. But my car isn't covered by a recall that vw has on a bunch of other models. There's a defect investigation into fires in the engine and a recall on sludge. This car is an accident waiting to happen and it's very poorly engineered. One thing after another and vw national is no help. I'm abandoning the car today, trading it in for something else. Will never buy a vw again. No car should have this many issues at 4 years old. And the issues started at 3 years old.
- the contact stated that while driving a 2006 Volkswagen Passat it stalled in a turn. He had been driving along steadily for 2 hours with out incident prior to the vehicle losing power. The contact took the vehicle to be serviced, and was informed that they could not find the cause of the problem. The passenger side headlight was inoperable, the work was completed, however 2 hours later the headlight failed again. The vehicle exhibits a one to three second lag in the accelerator, most noticeable when the consumer is truing to accelerator. There was a rattle coming from the headliner/sunroof assembly. There was a rubbing noise coming from the brakes. There was a rattling noise coming from the rear view mirror trim pieces. The windshield wipers were inoperative. The fog lights were inoperative. Updated 01/31/07.
1) our 2003 Volkswagen Passat 1. 8t is leaking water into the passenger side of the cab. 2) this appears to be a common problem in the Passat as well as other Volkswagens and has the potential to cause electrical malfunctions. 3) repair will require modification of drain systems around the vehicle to prevent intrusion of water into sensitive spaces.
Interior left front floor of car flooded with water after very heavy rain. There was an inch of standing water sitting on the vehicle's carpet. This is the 2nd incident in 5 weeks. After a similar heavy rainfall in August the interior left front and rear floor was flooded. Standing water was in the front and rear of the car. After doing research on-line this appears to be a problem with the sun roof drains.
Following a heavy rain, entire floorboard wet with no evidence of overhead or side panel wetness. Water drained directly into car but not through door seals or windows. Drain plugs in undercarriage removed and water streamed out for approx. 10 minutes. Initial assessment by dealer indicates water damaged comfort module (controlling all powered components like windows, door locks, sunroof, cruise, seats, etc. ) and transmission module and connectors. Over $4500 estimate (not finished to date). Source of leak not yet found by dealer.
My Passat had two previous instances of water leakage in the floor of the back seat, where the computer is housed. This resulted in a short-circuit in the cars computer in the fall of 2005, causing the car to slow in traffic and ultimately stop when I reached dealership. Maroone Volkswagen of delray beach addressed these two instances under warranty by focusing on the pollen filter and pollen filter caging. On the third occasion, I again took it to maroone Volkswagen on September 6, 2006 since this seemed to be another recurrence of the same problem. Dealer would not fix under warranty. Service advisor said cowl had a hairline fracture, which was allowing water under my hood and into the car. However, cowl was intact on previous visits for same problem. Contacted vw of America who accepted dealers diagnosis. This is especially troubling given there is a wealth of information online posted by Passat owners experiencing the same leakage problem that I describe above, and it is not due to cowl. Please refer to autobahn. Com.
: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the vehicle lurched forward without warning. The vehicle was inspected by an independent repair shop who determined the rainwater drainage tubes under the carpeted floorboard area leaked onto the electrical wiring which caused the automatic transmission control module to malfunction. The mechanic determined the wiring to the transmission control module needed replaced. The dealership and the manufacturer were alerted updated 10/17/2006 - the manufacturer refused to offer any assistance.
A 2000 Passat station wagon had water leak into the passenger-side foot well twice after heavy rains. Once the leak was more than an inch. All of the windows and the sunroof had been securely closed prior to the rains. A series of electrical problems in the dashboard resulted on the two different occasions, leading to approximately $3,500 in repairs. The repairs were to the engine timing system and to a motor in the air conditioner.

On 7/13/06 I purchased a new 2006 vw Passat from bert smith vw in st. Petersburg, florida. I took delivery at 5pm on Friday 7/14/2006. I have 4 major problems. Bert smith vw service person (noel aponte and his service manager michael) and they say that they have never heard of the below issues. First issue: I have extreme idle shaking of the engine. This is constant - meaning you would have to turn off the ignition to stop it. I can shift the transmission into neutral and still feel the shaking. I can put the gear in park or in drive and it is still shaking. Sometimes the shaking is mild (like the shaking while braking) other times it is severe. . . So severe you can see the entire car shake. Second major issue: I drive my car of a parked position (or after coming to a rolling stop at a light) and the car feels like it is trying to pull or lunge forward while my foot was previously on the brake. At this time I have to put extreme pressure on the brakes to keep it from moving forward. The light turns green and I am off. I come to another light, the same thing happens. Regarding these 2 issues, here is a threaded discussion on the website vwvortex. Com. . Read more...
Have a water leak in my 2004 vw Passat. After a heavey rain I was cleaning the inside of my car and noticed a large amount of water in the rear floor behind passenger's seat. I then soaked up all of the water and air dried my mat. I have searched the internet and found that this is a common occurance for vw owners and would like to report this immediately. Thanks for your time.
I currently own a 2002 Volkswagen Passat. In may 2006 after some heavy rain, I noticed some dampness and odor emanating from the passenger-side flooring of my vehicle. During the last two months, the leakage has dramatically increased. After a heavy rain I have seen as much as one inch of standing water in the rear footwell. I took it to a local vw dealership today, who suggested the problem was due to an after-market piece of radio equipment that was installed more than two years ago. After returning home and carefully examining all of the sunroof drainage hole, I have determined that the rear passenger side drain does not drain to its intended location. The water seeps through the rear door's casing/seal and into the floor. The leak has caused my undercarriage to rust and leak. Many other vw owners have experienced this same problem. The average cost to repair the damage is over $1000. Some consumers had electrical failures as the standing water occurs directly over electrical compartments. The defect is not under warranty from vw, regardless rf the age of the vehicle. Vw states this is a maintenance issue; however, this is not mentioned in any owner's manual, and it is not a part of any vw service plan.
Debris in cowl area can clog drain hole causing water to enter vehicle shorting out computer and wiring.
Severe flood damage inside the rear passenger side foot well of my 2002 Volkswagen Passat. Flooding occurred after a moderate rain. Could find no blocked drains in the sun roof of the pollen filter.
