1 Starter problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2019

I just purchased the 2009 Volkswagen Routan. I have had it 3 weeks it randomly died when test driving the van and all the alarms and lights came on. We just thought I didn't have the fob in right. Then it started to randomly not start, even the remote start will not work. The lights, radio, alarm, windows and door locks work like they normally should. Usually if I wait like 20 minutes and keep trying the key (taking it out of the ignition and reinserting it) until it starts. The check engine light came on for 7 days. Thursday 10/10/2019 nothing worked let it sit overnight and still nothing tried to jump it and it finally started. Took to place I purchased jd byrider in janesville, WI and they believe it was the starter because it was not turning and it was replaced on 10/11/2019. Then 2 hours later the car again would not start again. The dealer came to rescue me and we tried the actual key and at first it didn't work, we pushed the gas and it as as the gas pedal got stuck for about 30 seconds but started. Then driving down route 26 from johnson creek, WI to janesville, WI, it was making squeaking noises from the engine. We could hear it through the heating vents. Then the tire pressure warning light came on and it kept dinging. When I got to janesville, I checked the tire pressure on all the tires and it was fine. Because I live in rockford, IL, I drove down i90 and the car at times started shaking like it was going died. Again, today it won't start not even with an actual key. Also, the driver side passenger door lock is not working and had to have a part ordered. The vehicle has 129,000 miles.

2 Starter problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2017

The car does not start after a stop. It takes hours before it restarts. Replaced battery, starter still same issue. Many other vw Routan owners have the same issue. The car has power but something is messed up in this car.

3 Starter problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2017

As of January 2017 I have had the repeated issue of the car not starting when turned on. Note the recall on the ignition was done by the vw dealer previously. The car not starting at first occurred once and awhile. Then became more consistent, I replaced the starter in March 2017 thinking that would resolve the issue. Since then the problem keeps occurring. Vw dealer has no idea what the issue is and wants me to replace the starter again. I've researched this mechanical problem and found out a lot of people are having the same issue. There's a click when you attempt to start the car and this is after the battery and starter has been replaced. The longest I've waited for the car to start is about 30 minutes. I attempt to start it a few minutes are sitting in the car, sometimes it takes one try sometimes it takes 20 tries then the car will start up. I've reported this to vw care and they advised me to get the starter replaced again, spending more money. This is not a customer care issue, this is on the vw company.

4 Starter problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2017

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Routan. While driving 60 mph, the contact detected a burning odor without warning. In addition, the contact observed smoke outside and inside the vehicle. The contact stated that the instrument panel, headlights, and radio failed to work. The contact was able to pull the vehicle over, opened the hood, and saw no sign of a fire. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the wire from the ignition switch to the starter had failed (burned) and needed to be replaced. Also, the power steering line failed and leaked. The independent mechanic stated that there were so many electrical failures with the vehicle and recommended her to contact NHTSA. The local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 15v194000 and 14v396000 (electrical system: ignition switch). The failure mileage was 145,000.

5 Starter problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2017

Engine will not start. Happens on occasion but happened enough that I had two starters installed as well as a battery. What else could it be? can turn the key and nothing happens. I can possibly sit there and turn the ignition 10+ times and still nothing. Thought it could be a bad spot in the new starter?? cleaned battery posts often and now have treated the connections. Would like not to receive another call from lovely wife that the van would not start. Has to be something with a circuit staying open or something. Safety issue due to not knowing if your car is going to start when you arrive to a destination. Issue has been going on for 2+ years and van has 100k miles last instance of issue: 23 June 2017.

6 Starter problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2016

The car won't start intermittently. When you turn the key it just clicks. The starter is not engaged or the flywheel doesn't turn. Took it to the dealer said it was faulty tipm module needed to be replaced not covered by warranty. Google tipm Routan/ Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep and you will see this is a huge problem. Not sure why the government won't force Chrysler / Volkswagen (Chrysler manufactured the Routan for Volkswagen) to recall them affected vehicles. This not covered by warranty and its a $1200 to replace. Completely ridiculous if this is such a widespread problem.

7 Starter problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2016

For years I have experienced intermittent failures in starting my car, each time if I wait a while it will start. Additionally, beginning in Feb 2016, my engine will simply shut down while the car is in motion (pretty scary). I have dealt with vw several time to no avail and always at my expense. This latest development may cost me or someone else their life. Vw acts like this has not happened to anyone else and if they can't recreate the issue they can't address the issue, really! this is criminal! I have had a starter replaced as well as a switch and no change. All I get from vw is "you can take it to another dealer and get a second opinion we will cover 1 hour of the cost to diagnose the problem" really no greater expertise no information sharing, just another dealer, the third of which will likely tell me, we can't create the problem!.

8 Starter problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2016

The vehicle does not start periodically. The vehicle will start for 2 to 3 weeks and then not start several times. If you wait for a period of time or play with the fuse box, or try different ways to start the vehicle it will start. This is an electrical problem. I have been driving and had all the dashboard lights illuminate and have beeping noises for no reason. No warning lights are illuminated and no errors are on the computer. The vehicle has a new battery and alternator. I have read online the entire tipm unit(fuse box/electrical system control unit) is defective and needs to be replaced along with the starter and fuel pump relays, which is well over $1000 worth of work, but I have not had it completed yet. Others have complained about the vehicle turning off while driving, which fortunately has not happened to me yet. The vehicle has a dvd system that worked and does not work now. This should have been a recall item a long time ago, since I understand Volkswagen is well aware of the issue.

9 Starter problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2016

I bought a certified pre-owned 2009 Routan. After about a year, the car randomly will not start, it just clicks but will not start. Replaced battery. Still - car will not start. This has been going on for 3 years. Had starter & alternator checked - both good. Had the ignition recall done and problem resolved itself for about 3 months - now it started doing this again - randomly will not start. Hubby moved a wire under the hood and magically the car started. Got home and van will not start! after spending $5,200 on a new transmission - I hate to put any more $$ into this van. Has anyone found a fix for this problem - I've seen many have this same issue. Talked to a lady at vw repair shop who has been in excess of $3,000 trying to fix this exact same problem. Still keeps happening. Help!.

10 Starter problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

The car will not start at times and make clicking sounds. This vehicle has been doing that for quite some time (at 80,000 miles) it is now 106,000 miles. I have taken it just about everywhere and done just about everything. No one can figure out what's wrong with it. I have changed the recall (win module), new starter,.

11 Starter problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2014

My key has been sticking in the ignition intermittently. Usually I have to turn the car back on turn the wheel, put it in gear and back in park, one or both of those things usually frees the key from the acc mode and allows me to remove it from the ignition. Today, I went to start the van and it is dead. Click. That is all it does. It does not appear the battery is dead, as the headlights and interior lights come on, the door dings, the mileage comes up, etc. There is a recall for something involving the ignition, but I have not been informed by vw yet as to a repair. I have sent in four prior complaints concerning this vehicle. I bought it used 7/2010 from carmax. It is unreliable and dangerous to have on the road. The entire brake system needs repaired every 7,000 miles following a sudden caliper seize, the van has numerous electrical issues that cause the car to just stop. One day I heard it running in my garage. I cant rule out one of my children messing with the fob, however, I have difficulty with the remote starter myself? (click2x&hold) I do not feel safe with this vehicle. I will not drive my children long distances or travel roads with them that require speeds over 40 mph. The van died while I was driving it 55-60mph on a busy highway, the vw dealership said it was not a recall issue. I clearly see it is a recall issue for some Routans, my receipt reads exactly as the side door harness recall is stated. I will be working with vw to request reimbursement, however, I don't feel that is good enough. There is a major problem here. I am lucky myself or my children have not been hurt. In hindsight of the gm ignition recall, I would be amiss to think a car company has my best interest in mind. I am hoping my government does.

12 Starter problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Routan. The contact stated that the when the ignition key was disengaged, the doors failed to lock. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start without warning. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the starter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number:14v396000 (electrical system) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000. Ss.

13 Starter problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2013

The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Routan. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled multiple times. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who was not able to replicate nor diagnose the failure multiple times. The authorized dealer replaced the starter and hose but the failure still recurred. The vehicle continued to stall intermittently. The contact had to put the vehicle in neutral and then park to get the vehicle to start. The vehicle was taken to a Volkswagen specialist who diagnosed that the egr valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired and the failure recurred. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 11v151000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000.

14 Starter problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2011

My 2009 Routan 3. 8l will intermit not start / I get check engine light and electricial ligthing bolt. About 3 years ago it started and I was told it was my battery. Replaced my battery it was good for about 1yr then it started again had the battery replaced again then about 1yr later it started again but my battery is tested good. I went through 2 batteries in about 3 yrs. I even had my starter checked and it tested good. My friend who is a machanic said why is the starter next to the exchaust manafold it is getting hot. When I have issue in the last year it take about 30min or longer before it starts then I might not have any issues for about 1 or 2 weeks and sometime I might have the issues 2 times in one day. I have checked online and I am seeing many people are complaining about the 2009 vw Routan intermit not starting. I have call vw and my van is not on the list for the ignition switch recall. Today 8/5/2014 my Routan I will not start at all I am gonig to have the battery checked.
