general problems of the 2009 Volkswagen Routan - part 1

Volkswagen dealership does not want to fulfill the recall.

The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle, the engine failed to turnover. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the ignition switch failed and needed to be replaced; however, the dealer confirmed that parts were not available for the recall repair. The vehicle had not yet been repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000. While driving the vehicle flashed several of the dashboard waring lights, starting dinging and then stopped, started flashing and dinging again then the vehicle completely turned off. I was able to pull over out of traffic but the vehicle would not restart. None of the interior lights would come one and the emergency lights would not come on. I could not unlock any of the doors. The battery has been replaced with in the last year and is working correctly.

The car shuts off while driving which is scary. Requires restarting while in traffic. There was a recall in past and the fix clearly did not work. This incident has occurred multiple times.

After getting wires regrounded at the mechanic, the car continues to malfunction. The wiper blades turn on, the entire dash blinks, the seat moves back and forth, resetting repeatedly. If seat is disconnected for safety, the seatbelt does not register as secured. Eventually doors stop functioning, have completely lost lock function, tried replacing battery and sending to mechanic specialist. Still the car malfunctions at random.

My vehicle shows no pending recalls, but ignition switch still malfunctioning whenever it is bumped or a lanyard is on the key. Brakes malfunction, car seat moves, windshield wipers move, car seems to think it is resetting as original recall states is a problem.

Thank god I was not going fast. Vehicle shut down completely while driving. Was able to put in park and was able to start it back up. Apparently, the Routan is manufactured by crysler and this issue also happens with the 09 town and countries as well.

Van has stalled while driving on multiple occasions. Power steering is lost. Vehicle will then start right back up. This is extremely dangerous for a minivan used to transport multiple children. No codes or faults are recorded.

Five times in the past 6 months the power in the van basically turns off. The steering becomes next to impossible and the brakes become extremely tight to the point you can't even use them. It is terrifying to have zero control over your car considering I have 4 children. It has happened while I was going only 30mph and also when I was going 45 mph. It happens when I'm going straight and has also happened while turning. Since the latest issue I refuse to drive anywhere that I can't take back roads to.

While driving car it turns off. Has to be restarted. Faulty ingnition switch. Noticed a past recall.

There are two issues that keep occurring that may or may not be related. First, sometimes when I start the vehicle every single light on the dash will be lit up, the wipers will be on, the radio won't work, and none of the gauges will be working. I have to use my gps just to know what my speed is since the spedometer doesn't work. I also can't turn on my defrost when this happens so I'm stuck sitting in the parking lot waiting. Eventually it will randomly switch back to normal and then everything works. My second issue is that I will lose all power while driving. This happened in a roundabout once which almost caused a crash! I lose ignition, power steering, everything. I have to get to the side of the road, put it in park, and turn the ignition off and back on again. One of these days this is going to cause a crash and then I will be suing Volkswagen when my babies get injured because of this. From the looks of the other complaints this is happening to a lot of these vans!.

I take my vw Routan to finish the recall . Becaused my door open when I was driving from georgia to florida with my 2 daughter in the back seat and driver rear slide door open at 70 miles. . Vw dealer talk me no have the parts but they fixed and when I take to different dealer they talk me they ready did the recall and replaced the harness. . Thursday my wife driving and has the same problem door open when she driving. . Take the Mini van to shop and they talk me dealer never did the recall. . . I alway have the Mini van and no one touch dear before. . .

Tipm box needs to be replaced, vw dealership says it is faulty and has glitches that need to be repaired but it exceeds my warranty. I purchased this van 3 weeks ago and the radio will go out or stay on, the wipers will come on by themselves and the tire pressure light will come on.

Vehicle will intermittently not start even after multiple try�s. Vehicle shuts off during driving events city and highway. Abs lights come on and stay on. Interior lights come on automatically during driving. Have had the vehicle to a vw dealer 4 times for this issue and they cannot diagnoses, nor remedy the issue. I have spent well over $2,000 for these vw dealer visits. This vehicle was built by Chrysler for vw and Chrysler issued a recall on the tipm for the Chrysler vehicles. Vw refuses to issue a recall for the tipm. This is a major safety issue that causes the vehicle to shut off during driving and all power and braking functions are lost. At this time, I have no choice but to pay an additional $1,500 to have vw replace the tipm in the hopes that it resolves this dangerous safety issue and keeps my family safe. Nhtsa must investigate this issue with Chrysler and realize that it applies to vw Routan vehicles built by them as well, and force vw to recall the vehicles and fix the issue at their cost and provide full reimbursement to all Routan owners who have this same safety issue. What actions are NHTSA taking on this critical safety issue?.

When I'm driving all the lights will turn on on the dash board then turn off and my windshield wipers will turn in the process when all the lights turn on while I'm driving the van will say I'm going 0 miles per hour.

I was driving my 2009 Routan this morning (8/6/18) in a round-a-bout when out of blu my steering and brakes completely locked up and my abs light came on. I had traffic behind me. I almost went over the curb and caused an accident due to this happening. I praise god that I and everyone around was safe. My vehicle has already had the ignition ssswitch replaced twice. I had it checked for codes and nothing came up. I noticed a huge amount of complaints regarrding this. What is it going to take to get this fixed? there are lives on the line. When a vehicle shuts down on the highway that will cause a major accident. Is Volkswagen and NHTSA willing to live with that knowing that this has been a major issue with this vehicle for some time? how many injuries or deaths do you need to prove to you that this is a safety issue?.

The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph with the cruise control activated the vehicle suddenly experienced unintended acceleration causing the speed to increase past 90 mph. During the incident the vehicle speed would not decrease when pressing the brake pedal and the cruise control could not be deactivated. The driven had to switch the engine off in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer coventry motorcars. Located at 2152 boston tpke, in coventry CT. Who had not yet determined the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 78,000. Jft.

Tl - the contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen Routan. While driving at 40 mph, the contact noticed the transmission became stuck in 3 gear. The dealer was not notified of this failure. The manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that they were not able to assist even though they are aware that Chrysler put a recall out for this failure and Chrysler manufactured this vehicle for Volkswagen. The VIN search reveled no recalls. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 75,000. Nb.

Driving down the road and all the lights will start blinking and vehicle will turn completely off. No brakes or power steering when this takes place. Unable to drive being pregnant and having 3 young children and do not fill safe since this happened going down hill in a turn.

The failure recurred at least 15 times within the past two weeks. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,900.

The tipm module went out, causing all instruments to go to zero, all indicators to light up, the warning tone sounded, the wipers started of their own accord, and other craziness related to the computer system. The vehicle was moving at the time; parking, turning off the engine and back on, adjusting speed -- nothing made a difference. Since Volkswagen Routans are just rebadged Chrysler town and countries, the tipm issue is just as much of a problem on Routans as it was on Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep vehicles.

The vehicle while driving had all the warning lights come on , the gauges go up and down and the vehicle cut off. This happened multiple times one afternoon. Had to have it towed to the house. Internet search shows that this is a routine problem for others as well.

I driving last month 47 mph and my driving sliding door open and my 8 years girls was dear and she scare when the door open when I driving ,, and when I stop the door not want to close automatic. . That scare me and my wife. . . The other concern is my transmision hard shiffting ,hard shiffting , I ready take like 5,6 time my van to check my transmission and my sliding door and the say is normal , and my sliding door not found anytime , they say the sliding door recall was done ready,, the other big concern is the gas mileage, only 11 or 12 gallon for miles they did a lot test and not found nothing ,,is poss to 16 mph for gallon and never have that,,. . . . My wife was driving our van when she pulled out onto the main road from our driveway when the vehicle lost all power, including power steering and brakes. Fortunately there was no accident but she did have to stop the vehicle and cycle the keyswitch to restart the vehicle. I have contacted the closest dealer to have this known recall fixed on our van only to be told they have to witness this event happening. Though this has happened 3 times since we bought the car used 3 months ago it is a very intermittent issue. The dealer is about an hour and a half from our house which makes it a 3 hour round trip and a day off from work. I don't mind taking a couple of days off to get this problems solved but the service manager told me some of these vans have not been repaired for 4 months because they cannot duplicate the problem. Whatever happened to the customer is always right? needless to say this is a safety issue and a huge liability. I did contact Volkswagen customer care and they told me the dealer should replace the part and it does not have to be witnessed by their personnel. With that information in an e-mail I once again contacted the dealer and they basically told me vw customer care was wrong and they would have to duplicate the problem in their shop. I am very frustrated with this whole process. It is a known problem. . . Shouldn't they fix it before harm or even death comes to my loved ones? the dealer is lithia vw (phone (541) 774-7500) in medford ,oregon and the service personnel I talked with was named zach.
