Thank god I was not going fast. Vehicle shut down completely while driving. Was able to put in park and was able to start it back up. Apparently, the Routan is manufactured by crysler and this issue also happens with the 09 town and countries as well.

The car will just shut down while driving. No warning, no lights, no check engine, no power steering or power breaks (I have to put all I got into trying to steer the car to just pull over!). I have to bring the car to a complete stop and restart it. It has happened about 3 times. Took it to 3 garages and they could not figure out the problem because the car never gave any computer codes when it would shut down. There are similar complaints and I'm wonder how vw knows of this issue and has failed to inform the owners of these vehicles. If my van shuts off on the freeway, this could be very serious!.

Vehicle will intermittently not start even after multiple trys. Vehicle shuts off during driving events city and highway. Abs lights come on and stay on. Interior lights come on automatically during driving. Have had the vehicle to a vw dealer 4 times for this issue and they cannot diagnoses, nor remedy the issue. I have spent well over $2,000 for these vw dealer visits. This vehicle was built by Chrysler for vw and Chrysler issued a recall on the tipm for the Chrysler vehicles. Vw refuses to issue a recall for the tipm. This is a major safety issue that causes the vehicle to shut off during driving and all power and braking functions are lost. At this time, I have no choice but to pay an additional $1,500 to have vw replace the tipm in the hopes that it resolves this dangerous safety issue and keeps my family safe. Nhtsa must investigate this issue with Chrysler and realize that it applies to vw Routan vehicles built by them as well, and force vw to recall the vehicles and fix the issue at their cost and provide full reimbursement to all Routan owners who have this same safety issue. What actions are NHTSA taking on this critical safety issue?.
Car shut off numerous times while driving. There was no way to turn steering wheel it just stops nothing you can do to keep it running hopefully no one is tailing me because if not I will definitely crash. Mechanic can't seem to find problem. Maybe tipm or key fob? changed key fob no luck.

My 2012 Volkswagen Routan has only 87k miles and the car will crank but will not start, and or while driving the car's idle becomes rough and drops to the point of shutting off while driving. My wife drives this car with my daughter and if this car shuts off while driving it can cause accidents and bodily harm to others.
Nhtsa campaign id number: 11v151000. My car shuts off while driving it. It goes into auxiliary you need to safely pull it to the side of the road and restart it. This has occurred multiple times. Experience inadvertent ignition key displacement from the run to accessory position while driving causing the engine to shut off. An engine shutting off suddenly while driving could increase the risk of a crash.
Tipm module issue. My 2011 vw Routan was built by Chrysler with the same parts as any other Chrysler car at that time. Chrysler issued a recall for all vehicles made with this particular part as it is a life threatening issue. Most importantly the car will stop in the middle of driving! imagine going down the freeway doing 70mph with your kids in the car and the car shuts off. Because the car is branded as a vw, chrysyler refuses to replace the recalled part which I was quoted at $1300 from the dealership and vw says it is a Chrysler part and issue. This thin gray line is costing people thousands of dollars and possibly even lives. Also the fuel pump runs without car turned on. This is a safety issue which causes the fuel pump to run and drain the battery dead along with other safety issues like car stopping dead. This car cannot run without the new tipm and this recall must be honored by vw. They are making us pay for a new module. There are thousands of these Routans with this problem and no one is listening. So I also replaced fuel pump after issues with engine refusing to turn over. Next day after repair the vehicle refused to start. So I have explored the internet regarding this issue and find many complaints with the need to replacement tipm. This van has an engine built by Chrysler which recalled its 2011 vans to replace this device. Please force vw to do the same! its truly absurd that vw will not create a recall for the tipm as Chrysler did.
While driving approximately 35 to 40mph on a busy road en route to get on the highway, my Routan shut off. The engine shut off, the steering wheel locked up, and the car came to a stop. Luckily I was able to pull off the road. I turned the key to the off position after putting the car in park and the car cranked back up shortly after. I drove it slowly home approximately 10 miles. Both of my young children (10 months and 5years) were in the vehicle. After getting home I began to research and found that this problem lead to a recall of win modules for 2009 and 2010 Routans. My vehicle is not covered under the current recall despite having the same issue. I have found that numerous other Routan drivers have had this same issue in their 2011 vehicles. We cannot afford to have this repaired and I fear for the safety of my children and our family should we drive this car.
As we are driving the power steering completely cuts off and will not let you drive - the engine shuts off and your forced into turning the vehicle completely off them back on again. This happened while on the interstate in traffic which nearly caused a collision.
My vehicle is experiencing the same problem as other vehicles of the same year that received a recall. The car just shuts off, loses power and all steering, braking and so on. It makes the vehicle very dangerous. The other vehicles in this year all had bad ignition switches but vw refuses to include my vehicle and others like it of the same model year that have the exact same problem. I believe that they need to expand this recall to include more vehicles of the 2010 model. The vehicle is not safe to drive and is scary when it just cuts out on you when you are driving 30-40 mph plus.
While driving typically at speeds less than 45 mph the vehicle engine will shut down and electrical power at the dash is lost. Vehicle will restart after it shuts down. Problem is not consistent. Dealer can not verify the complaint, therefore can not repair. Nhtsa recall 14v396 appears to be the correction for the issue. Dealer will not perform the recall until they duplicate the issue. Has been at the dealer for 6 days with no duplication of the complaint.
We have had several occasions where the van completely shuts off even while running. Reported it to our local vw dealer and have been told that it might be an ignition problem which is part of a recall. Was informed that at this time they can't repair it because they don't make that part. Had it completely shut down on us while it was getting serviced at the dealer for new brakes. Was told that all it needed was new battery. Paid for it and got it to start only to shut down again two days later. Took it back again and was told that it is not the recall its something else thats causing for the car to shut off. Now the dealer said that they will pay for the part but we pay for labor and we have 7 days to agree. They need to fix this ongoing problem. We are now carrying around $175 jumper to start it when it shuts off. Have had to sign up for tow assistance program just in case my family is stranded.
Was driving on a residential street when the engine shut off without warning. Completely lost all power (steering, brakes, etc). Was able to pull over to side of road thankfully only going 25 mph and no traffic. Put vehicle in park, started up immediately and ran fine after that. Received recall letter in mail the following week stating the ignition switch can turn off without notice incident happened 2 additional times, similar circumstances. Spoke with dealer and vw corporate on 3 separate occasions. Volkswagen states they do not have a solution for the recall repair at this time, nor will they do anything about the possible safety issue of the vehicle shutting off and causing an accident.
The contact owns a 2010 Volkswagen routon. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, the engine would shut off without warning. The failure recurred numerous times. The contact mentioned that the vehicle was exhibiting the same failures as mentioned in recall NHTSA campaign number: 11v151000 (electrical system). However, the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 77,000.
Our 2009 vw Routan completely shuts down while driving 3 times now. Not only does it shut down, but the steering and brakes lock as well. On the last occurence, my wife (with our children in the car) came very close to hitting a parked car in the street. We have taken it to 2 vw dealers so far in charlotte, nc and they state: "we cannot duplicate the issue. " unfortunately, that is not the right answer when you have something as dangerous as this happening to our family car. We have called vw corporate to help 2nd dealership with a resolution, but nothing has been fixed at this time. We are not sure what do at this point, and seems like both vw and vw dealerships are aware of issue, but no one wants to touch it! please help!.
While driving, engine shut off like the ignition was turned off - lost power steering and brakes. This has happened multiple times since incident date. Volkswagen service could not diagnose the problem.
At least twice per month when I drive my van, the steering will suddenly go out, then the brakes will stop working, then it will just shut off. So far it has only happened when I was driving at pretty low rates of speed. I've called the vw dealership several times and each time they say that they haven't heard of anything like this before and want to charge me a fortune just to look at it. With the newest recall, I cannot understand why my vehicle is not included and the dealership still claims that they have no clue what I'm taking about when all these vehicle were made bu the same manufacturer. This has happened so many times, I can feel it in the steering right before it happens. As soon as my steering starts to get tight, I have to hit the brakes right away before they go out, and turn the car off. Usually when I restart the car, it's fine. This is getting ridiculous and I should have to go through this with a vehicle when there is a proper fix. I have 4 children and another on the way and this is not safe.
1st incident-parking car in a stall, car shuts off before parked. P0111 replace air temp sensor 2nd incident-exiting the freeway on a single lane just under 35mph engine shuts off, steering wheel locks right, apply brakes lightly, shift into neutral to turn wheel to pull on shoulder. P0300 and p0302 code. Dealer replace bank #2 cylinder head and necessary parts. (incident posted information) 3rd incident-merging on freeway up the hill, engine bogs and shuts off, was on far right lane pulled to side. Dealer says misfire on cylinder #6 with no dtc code, says ignition coil problem on #6.
This is the third experience we have had of our car shutting off all of the sudden. The first time it happened I could hardly pull the car off the road because when it shut off I was on the highway and was very difficult to steer of the road. The second and third time this happened I was in town and also had a hard time pulling over. After each incident I had to turn key to off position put car in park and restart it. Then it seemed to be ok until the next time it happened. This is very scary and could cause an accident. I am scared to drive this car now. We where driving on the expressway(freeway) and the vehicle shut down on us from 65-0 in seconds, it tool about a minute and it came back up this happened about 3-4 times . About a month later it id the same this time when we first turned on the van. About March time frame the van would not start anymore after a long trip away from home the cables had been eroded and severely damaged to the point of no power going to the van. The dealer replaced the electric cables but about 1 1/2 months later the same erosion started to happen. We continued to inform vw about the issues and they always said the same bring it in when it happens. We finally had to get rid of the van we can not afford a fatality to try and prove a point.
2010 Routan with less than 10k miles on it. While driving on a city street the vehicle shut off leaving us with no power brakes, no power steering and very little control of the car. My husband was able to pull over and wait for the car to stop. He then put it in park and restarted it. We took it straight to the dealership service. The same thing had happened to me the day before and at least a dozen times before that. I thought it was something I was doing. Vw service can find nothing wrong with the vehicle and we have made it clear that they can keep it until they do. We do not feel safe and will not trust our lives or the lives of our child and friends in this car. I have heard many other people with this same problem. Something needs to be addressed ASAP. I have contacted vw and notified them of the problem and waiting for a call back. Also waiting for news on our vehicle. . Day 2 at the shop.
