Volkswagen Tiguan owners have reported 9 problems related to brake sensor (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Tiguan based on all problems reported for the Tiguan.
My vehicle's front assist collision sensor will engage itself while going down some driveways regardless of how slow or angled I try to exit (I always make sure that my exit and turns are safe from any ongoing traffic so the sensor is only being tripped from ground in front of the sensor). I have been almost been rear ended three times because of this and almost hit from the side when the the sensor engaged when I was more than halfway out into the first lane to make my turn. I have engaged several vw service technicians about a permanent fix but they said that they are aware of the problem after hearing of several other complaints but there is no permanent fix. It is the driver's responisbility to manually turn off the front assist collision sensor each and every time you intend to drive the car.

Driving in windy conditions, 4 separate times on one day, sensor went off. Red car graphic on my screen with "side impact" wave lines on the sides and car automatically braked suddenly. Happened in city, while in motion. No other cars in close proximity at time of sensor warning and braking. 3 of 4 times happened as was driving north into a strong north wind. Never had this warning thrown before.
Two separate problems. #1 on two separate occasions the cars emergency system activated with no cars or anything in proximity. Vw just cleaned sensors . It happened once after that while parking the car. #2 with only 8000 miles on the brakes pulse when applied. We were told just wait for 1 year service and it will be looked at. The Tiguan went in Friday morning and we were informed the brake rotors are warped. Vw north America recommend rotors and associated hardware to fix the problem. Troublesome issue with only 10000 miles les than I year old.
I was driving down a side road in a parking lot with no cars in front of me and no one in back of me. Suddenly the car braked and threw me forward. It scared the living daylights out of me. There was no reason why this happened. There was nothing in the road. I reported this problem to Volkswagen and they had no answer and told me to disable the braking sensor which I did. I felt the need to report this issue since I felt this was a possible defect in the braking sensor. If this would have happened on a busy road I could have been hit from behind. Again there was no reason for the sudden braking. This is a leased car and when I turn it in I just want to let them know that the sensor is turned off for the next person who leases it and has no idea it is turned off. In summary, I was going around 35-40 mph when this braking occurred with no reason whatsover. Thank you for your time.
The automatic breaking sensors went off for no reason. Car started breaking on it's own. Luckily no car behind me. Car was in motion on a 35 mph part of route 30 in indiana when it started to break suddenly. Took it to the dealership and they could not replicate it. I sent Volkswagen a message and they didn't reply.
On 2/17/2019, my sister & I were driving west on santa monica blvd. I was driving approximately 40-45mph. It was slightly overcast. There were no cars in front of us for blocks &, luckily, no cars behind us. There were no bicycles or motorcycles or pedestrians or any other apparent hazard in front or on either side of the car. Out of nowhere, the car's brakes slammed on, leaving us stopped in the middle of santa monica blvd. The digital cockpit went black & a red warning light started flashing across it. I asked my sister to grab the owners manual to try to figure out what was going on. After she grabbed it, the vehicle started driving again & shortly after that the digital cockpit went back to normal. It turned out the warning light was associated with the front assist system. I took my vehicle back to the dealership on 2/21/2019. On 4/6/2019, having fixed nothing, they forced me to take my car back. They performed a diagnostic test on 2/25/2019 that my sister & I saw, but they are refusing to provide me a copy of. In that diagnostic it did show that the distance monitoring system failed in 11/2018. The front assist does not show a fail or that it has ever been activated. Because my dealership has not been able to duplicate the malfunction, I am being told that this a normal function of the car. Vw also wanted me to keep a journal for when this malfunction happens again - as I've explained to vw & my dealership, the next time this happens there could be an accident that results in injury or death. I was still forced to take the car back. I am too scared to drive this car knowing that there is something malfunctioning with the sensors, autonomous braking system, front assist system. I am extremely worried about the malfunction causing an accident that could injure myself, my passengers, & other people on the roads.

Today, the car stalled while I was station/stopped at the red light and got dragged by the truck which almost ran over my car. My car's sensor switched to emergency mode and would not let me drive. I wanted to drive my car away when I saw the danger. However, l could not and almost got killed and ran over by the 18 wheels truck.
My wife's vehicle was parked yes she spilled water on that area, thank god it was parked. From what I have read about these particular e brakes they seem a very bad design. I knew when we purchased the car in 2009 just knowing autos this was a terrible design and feature especially the placement. I read enough online after today this has to be a recall I have had previous recalls on both my vw seat belts, misc. Sensors both a couple of times each yes vw took care of it but this situation is far too dangerous.

First, this exact same scenario also happened in October 2010. The first incident occurred when I was driving the vehicle, and now this time, when my husband was driving the vehicle. Both of us, each have 30+ years of driving experience and neither of us have ever been involved in a crash or experienced this type of loss of control in a vehicle, ever. Both incidents occurred while turning a corner at approximately 5 to 15 mph in approximately 1- 3 inches of new snow. The car slid with total loss of steering and brakes, smashing into the curb, breaking the axle, control arm, steering knuckle, etc. . . There was no control whatsover. This was not ice. This has never ever happened before with any other vehicle we have ever driven. The car did not correct itself even when the steering wheel was released. We believe there is a deficiency in the esp monitoring system. The esp system totally failed while turning. The esp sensors did not detect the situation and did not react at all independent of the driver. The esp system did not use the vehicle's braking system to "steer" the vehicle back on track. The esp did not initiate any braking intervention at all. It was like all systems just totally malfunctioned. Horrible. Someone is going to be seriously hurt. I am thankful another vehicle or person was in the area.
