I parked to go shopping and when I got back and turned on the car, the steering warming light came on and the power-steering was disengaged. I was not able to drive it as the wheel was too heavy. The steering corrected after waiting for an hour to start the car. My wife had the same issue the next day after dropping off our daughter at school and had to wait 30 minutes before the problem corrected. We took the car the honolulu vw the next morning on 7/7/2020, and they said they could not find an error on the car diagnostic and therefore could not fix the problem, they said to bring it back when it happens again. They recommended we have the steering rack replaced for roughly 3k. We called vw customer care on July 9,2020 and asked for help and let them know that we were considering legal advise as we have found roughly 30 other car owners reporting the same problem, with this make, mode and year with roughly the same mileage, and this seemed to be a factory flaw (a very dangerous one), they said we should have legal representation reach out to them.

I was driving my Volkswagen 2013 Tiguan down I-95 with my toddler daughter n the car when all of a sudden the steering wheel jerked very hard almost crashing us into another car. When I pulled over to safety the steering wheel light was on the dash lighting up along with a light that says epc. I did not feel safe driving the vehicle so I called a tow to come pick us up. About a few weeks later I was told my Volkswagen that they did not see the problem after coming there multiple times and having to pay the diagnostic fee each time that there was no issue because the light will go on and off. I told it to another shop where I paid 1,200 to replace the whole steering wheel. After that was fixed another problem just pops up out of the blue which is the airbag light. My horn no longer is working nor is my cruise control which is dangerous. So I can no longer drive this car with my children inside because I do not feel safe.
I was approaching my driveway in my 09 vw Tiguan when the red power steering assist warning light came and steering wheel locked. I could not turn the car. Fortunately, I was not driving fast or I could have been in and accident or worse. There was no warning of the yellow light, the red came on and that was it. This is a very unsafe feature on the Volkswagen that can kill someone. I have the vehicle in my driveway, waiting to be towed and repaired.
Power steering red light came on couldn't move car (while parked) happened twice in one day. Today steering wheel is moving by itself.

While in the middle a a 5 way boston intersection my power steering failed without warning and I was unable to direct my car in busy traffic. I was able to remain calm and turn on hazard lights to get myself out of harms way, but was extremely lucky. The steering light came on immediate, but there were no noises, no previous issues, and no way other than luck for me to prevent a serious accident.

I bought the vw Tiguan because it was rated #1 for safety but the morning of Friday July 25 2014 as I was leaving to work I started my car but the power steering was gone completely. I could drive forward and back but the steering wheel did not move at all as iand the power steering failure light came on in the dashboard. The Tiguan is almost 4 yrs old with 73,000 miles. The age is the issue with this problem. This has me very concern because what if I was driving on the freeway and the power steering failed then? I could only imagine what could have happen. What if my children were with me? this problem is unacceptable, inexcusable and life threatening. This is a very serious safety issue with the Tiguan. At the vw dealership's car shop I was told that they never heard of such problem with the Tiguans. I searchef on the web and it turns out there are several hundred 2009-2011 vw Tiguans owners that had that same problem, I got an estimate to fix it of $2,045. I called vw customer service and they where very nice and told me that they were going to see if they could help me with the repair. Next day I get a call from them and told me that they were not going to do anything about it because my Tiguan had more than 70,000 miles and way out of warranty. This power steering problem has nothing to do with the Tiguans age. Other people that have had this same experience and only had their Tiguan for 2 months with 1,800 miles on and the problem keeps reoccurring! warranty or no warranty this is a design flaw and should be covered by vw. Also in my opinion this is an issue worth a major recall but so far vw seems to be waiting for the first deaths to occur before they will react. There is always possibility that in traffic, the power steering really could go any moment. I am now very scared to be driving the Tiguan it's not safe and I don't feel safe!.

Steering got very heavy and then the steering warning light came on. The steering is at about half power. Have not gone to vw yet. Search the web shows alot of other people having this issue.
The outside temperature is -10f today. I started the car and allowed it to warm up for 10 minutes before driving it approximately 5 miles on an errand. I parked the car and turned it off. When I returned and started the car, the steering light came on and I lost the electronic assist for steering. I was able to drive the car home but it was very difficult and I will be having it towed to the shop. ** a quick internet search shows I'm not the only one having this problem so I thought it important to file this.

I was driving on the highway within the limited speed. The steering wheel was suddenly out of my control. The car moved left and right, but I couldn't control it. I hit the brake and eventually stopped by hit the guardrail after turning 180 degree on the highway. The steering wheel light was on but disappeared afterwards. This was a really scaring experience. I could be killed. After complaining the steering wheel problem to Volkswagen, since the steering wheel light (orange) disappeared, the customer representative said it was me whom caused the accident. I was furious and insisted on the issue by suggesting to run a thorough check. I waited for more than two weeks before I got a report from vw technician. I was expecting a thorough diagnostic test on the car's steering system, but I only got a short page saying about the car was drivable and apparently nothing wrong, except a noise ( like bearing noise) when turning the steering wheel left or right. Vw didn't even do any computer tests or any detailed tests on the car. The noise produced by the steering wheel was once again confirmed that something wrong with steering. Finally, vw confirmed there was something wrong with the steering and needed to change the steering system; however, vw said I caused the problem. This is completely nonsense. First, vw said there was nothing wrong with the steering system; however, later because of the obvious noise, now it admitted there was something wrong and said to need to change the whole steering system. Since there was only a slight damage at the left bumper at the driver's side, and it didn't damage the steering system inside; thus, it must be the malfunction of steering that caused the accident. However, the way Volkswagen dealt with my complaint was horrible. Vw tried to push all the responsibility on me and obviously didn't see the whole thing from my side.
We have had the power steering cut out multiple times in the vehicle. It has not happened while driving, the red power steering light seems to be on when we start it the second time for the day and doesn't always reset when restarting the car. We have yet to bring it to get fixed as the nearest dealer is 1200kms away.
Several recurrences of power steering issues in adverse or cold weather conditions. Complete loss of steering, power steering failure warning light. Now I get constant and loud grinding noise during operation of all steering functions.
1 out of 5 times I start my 2009 Tiguan (with 10,000 miles on it), my power steering will fail and the light will come on. Today the check engine light came on. I was driving about a block from my house when all of a sudden my power steering cut out and I had a very difficult time pulling off the road to shut off the engine and restart it. Once I restart the engine, I have no problem. It seems to be the initial start only- if I start it twice I have no problems. I bought the vehicle in the us and now live in canada, so my warranty is not covered unless I drive it to the us- scary thought considering the power steering has failed while driving down the road!.
