Steering Rack And Pinion Problems of Volkswagen Tiguan

The contact owns a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan. The contact stated while reversing out of driveway, the rack and pinion fractured while steering the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to the local dealer. The contact was informed that the bolt had fractured inside the rack and pinion. The contact called the manufacturer but was unable to reach a representative. The vehicle was not yet repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. Tl the contact owns a 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the power steering failed to operate as needed. The electronic power steering symbol appeared on the instrument panel. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic on several different occasions where the rack and pinion, steering angle sensor, clockspring, and the power steering control module were all replaced. The computer software in the vehicle was also update however, the failure persisted shortly after each repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was 91,000.

Upon starting the vehicle, electronic power steering is unresponsive/inoperable with corresponding chime and a red steering wheel warning is illuminated on dashboard. Seconds to minutes later the power steering will become responsive and red steering wheel indication is cleared or at times a yellow steering wheel will remain. After regaining power steering there is a sudden �jerk� and it is extremely loose at all speeds. This is remedied with either recycling power multiple times or periodically when an unspecified amount of time passes . This discrepancy happens when vehicle is parked and has been continued over the past two years. It is suspected to steering assist control module or rack and pinion.

The steering felt unusually loose while driving on a rainy day, then after parking the care for some 30 minutes and turning ti back on the red steering wheel indication was on and it was very hard to steer, the dealer scanned it and found no problems. After that it was turning on/off, it feels normal while driving the becomes very loose, and then back again. Three independent mechanic have diagnosed that the control unit of the electric power steering was damaged. The unit is sold as a whole part forcing the change of the rack and pinion part.
