My air bag error light came on at about 138,000 miles while my car was in motion, in the middle of making a left turn from a city street onto a side street. The horn and other controls on the steering wheel do not work now. This is a known problem that caused the company to extend a warranty that ended at 120,000 rather than issuing a recall. My driver's side airbag no longer works and my horn no longer works, both are safety issues. The company acknowledged this is a known issue with this model.

Drain tubes in the sunroof were corroded and leaking into the car. The water leak causes many electrical problems including short circuiting the passenger side airbag. The water leak is also causing lighting issues on inside of car. There is also many problems with the esc light coming on just after it being serviced. The esc light will come on while driving causing the car to slow down and wont let you accelerate.

Air bar click spring failed on vehicle on or about 12/6/17. Recall (15v483000- clock spring) included 2010-14 Tiguans but was told by vw of America that our 2012 vehicle did not qualify for the recall. Vw service agent at the dealership said that the recall 'expired'. Vehicle was outside of 'bumper to bumper' and power train warranty. Dealership charged $669 plus tax to replace the defective clock spring. The spring failed from routine, normal driving conditions. The spring failure caused a loss of power to the driver's side air bag and the vehicle's horn thus comprising the safety of the vehicle. Clock spring failure has been an ongoing issue for vw. Vw has been reluctant to recall all vehicles involved or provide customers with any compensation for the hefty repair bill to replace this defective part.

Vw recalled this vehicle for a defect in the clockspring which controls the driver side airbag. This repair was made in July 2016. Just 15 months later and less than 3000 miles later the clockspring failed again in the exact same fashion. The same classic clockspring failure mode as reported by vw. I had it replaced again this morning.

The timing chain tensioner in this vehicle is known to fail and destroy engines. They have issued technical service bulletins on the issue, but have done nothing to resolve the issue for owners. My wife and child were in the car and the tensioner failed and the engine stopped in the middle of a busy freeway causing them to almost get rear ended by a semi truck. . Read more...
