Volkswagen Tiguan owners have reported 73 problems related to air bag light on (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volkswagen Tiguan based on all problems reported for the Tiguan.
Steering wheel made clicking noise, suddenly the airbag light came on and no steering wheel controls would work while driving down the highway. Looked up that it could be the recall on the clock spring stating debris could get into the area and cause a failure. Spoke with vw of America, states the vehicle is only covered up to 120,000 (my mileage at time of call to vw was 135k). Given this is a known issue for these vehicles and the investigation even needed to be re-opened in 2018, you think the company would care about the safety of their customers as I am now driving a vehicle with an airbag that won't deploy upon impact (possibly fatal).

I was turning and a crack sound came from the steering wheel, turning the car caused the clock spring to break. Airbag light came on, horn doesn't work, no controls on steering wheel work. Known issue but they stopped recalls at 2014 models but should still havr recalls for later years, same issue.

My airbag light has gone off for about 2 weeks now. There is no reason why it should be off because I have not been in an accident or done anything differently. I do not feel comfortable driving my car and have looked into recalls. Turns out there has been several recalls for Volkswagen Tiguans 2017 in regards to recalls so I want this checked out ASAP.

I was driving my Volkswagen 2013 Tiguan down I-95 with my toddler daughter n the car when all of a sudden the steering wheel jerked very hard almost crashing us into another car. When I pulled over to safety the steering wheel light was on the dash lighting up along with a light that says epc. I did not feel safe driving the vehicle so I called a tow to come pick us up. About a few weeks later I was told my Volkswagen that they did not see the problem after coming there multiple times and having to pay the diagnostic fee each time that there was no issue because the light will go on and off. I told it to another shop where I paid 1,200 to replace the whole steering wheel. After that was fixed another problem just pops up out of the blue which is the airbag light. My horn no longer is working nor is my cruise control which is dangerous. So I can no longer drive this car with my children inside because I do not feel safe.
My airbag lights are on. Both on the dashboard and on the screen. It says airbags: error.

The airbag light is on in my vehicle and it was not listed on the airbag recall list. Has there been an unpublished update on the recall? the car was idling in driveway.
Vehicle repaired under recall 15v483000 on 5/2015. However, the repaired/replaced part appears to have failed again (clicking noise when turning wheel, air bag light on, complete loss of power in steering wheel). Airbag light came on after starting the car while parked on side of city street and merging into traffic at low speed.

A clicking sounds started coming from the steering wheel while turning, at one point the air bag light turned on, and from that point forward, the controls on the steering wheel no longer work, including the horn. The clicking sounds from the steering wheel is still present while turning. I called a place that specializes in vw and they suggested I call vw dealer instead because it was a safety issue and highly likely a recall. I called vw and they stated it was not a recall but part of an "extended warranty", which my car does not qualify for due to the miles on the car. After some research, it seems this is a very common issue with vw, and they are asking for $160 to simply diagnose the problem, even though it is clear to them what the issue is, and not new to them. It is not due to the age or mileage on the car, but a safety miss from their end.

Steering wheel began making a clicking noise every time I would turn the wheel either right or left. Then the volume and skip buttons stopped working on the steering wheel, left side only, the right side control buttons are working just fine. A couple of days later, the airbag light came on the dashboard and my steering wheel is still clicking when I turn the wheel. Doesn't matter if I'm on the freeway or in a residential area, it clicks no matter what and the airbag light has not gone off since.

Turning wheel to park heard clicking noise coming from steering wheel and then airbag light came on. Also discovered that controls on steering wheel stopped functioning including horn.
The first day I drove my new 2019 Tiguan sel home, I opened the passenger driver-side door and the handle got stuck and would not go back in. . . Made an appointment for 2-days later to get this fixed. During the 2-day waiting period, I was stopped in a turning lane on a four-lane, lighted road to make a u-turn. When I hit the gas peddle to go the car jerked forward, and went to a standstill for about 5-seconds while my foot was firmly pressing the gas peddle. This caused the two oncoming vehicles to have to screech to a stop; and the vehicle in the middle lane had to swerve to avoid hitting me and spin out. When the Tiguan started moving forward, I had to pull over because I was shaking. The same issue happened again the next day, but no oncoming cars were in sight. Went in for the door appointment, I told the service rep about engine and asked to speak to a manager. An assistant manager came out, I told him about the engine, and he respond that's a vw and gave me a hug and two free t-shirts. New door handle had to be ordered due to corrosion, had to come back 3-days later to have it fixed. During those 3-days, the passenger seat seat belt warning sound started randomly going off, along with the airbag light flashing above the hazard light when my handbag was on the seat. Reported that and the engine issue again at next appointment. Had to leave the car for two days. . . At pick-up was told everything was tested fine, but vw did not bother to test the seat sensor. Was instructed to not put anything on the passenger seat, as stated in the car's manual. Requested a new vehicle, or let me out of my lease due to feeling totally unsafe. . . Was denied by both corporate and dealer. Money should never come before safety, so I paid $3000 to break my lease today as vw corp & dealer told me to get back in that car. This is a deadly safety issue.

Had the clock spring break on our 2013 vw Tiguan - made a grindingish noise when making a standard turn and the airbag light came up on the dashboard. Steering wheel electronics (horn and controls) stopped working.
There was no crash or physical damage to my vehicle, airbag system is malfunctioning. For about a week now, "error: airbag" message is shown up on dashboard and the airbag light has turned on. In addition to that, even I buckled up, when I make a right turn seat belt alarm is beeping and seat belt light has turned on while I am driving. I am concerning about this serious safety issue. I am driving my car everyday with potential threat of accident without airbags being deployed.
In December 2015, an issue with the clock spring was repaired. The airbag light came on and the steering wheel functions ceased to work. This was not a vehicle under the recall, but the repair was covered under an extended warranty. Just this week, the part again failed, with a clicking sound from the steering wheel. Again, airbag light on with no controls on steering wheel working. The car nor part is no longer under warranty. The vehicle was being driven when this occurred.
I was taking my car out of the parking spot when I heard my steering wheel clicking. Suddenly, the airbag light appeared on the dash board, my steering wheel controls and my horn stopped working. I searched on the internet and I saw other cars with the same problem. I called vw and they said my car wasn't on the recall list and not on the warranty so I would have to repair it on my own.
While slowly turning left to park at a gas station I heard a "snap" and found that my airbag light came on and none of the controls on my steering wheel were working. Afterwards I noticed a consistent clicking noise whenever I would turn the wheel. After researching I am confident that this is an issue with the ribbon wire leading down the steering column from the clock spring. Many other Volkswagen models are having the same issue and recalled for this problem. Mine has not yet been recalled and this is a safety issue. This is a 2015 model that I purchased in March of 2018 and the issue occurred 6 months after I purchased the vehicle.
When doing a full turn my steering wheel started clicking and then my airbag light illuminated. I also lost all steering wheel controls and horn. After doing some research, I found out it was a clock spring. Volkswagen has had many models affected by this even my 2011 year Tiguan but when volkwagen pulls up my VIN, they are claiming it is not part of the recall which is very frustrationg.
My vehicle had a faulty clock spring in the steering column. This has been a problem for vw since 2011 and they are not covering it under warranty. It happened while driving. The steering column made a cracking noise then started making a grinding noise. At that point the steering button controls stopped working and the airbag light came on.

Takata recall. I was driving my car when I heard some clicking noise coming from the steering wheel. Suddenly, the airbag light appeared on my dashboard. The horn and the steering wheel controls, such as, volume, stopped working. I called Volkswagen and they said my car wasn't included on the clock spring recall even though my car details(year, model, problem) fit. I have had Volkswagen for ever 9 years and I am so frustrated. My car should have been included on the recall. No doubt.

The contact stated that after she got the battery replaced at the dealer (ancira Volkswagen san antonio 6125 bandera rd, san antonio TX 78238) the air bags warning indicator illuminated and the horn does not work. The contact stated her vehicle exhibited the same symptoms at NHTSA campaign number: 15v483000 (air bags). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. It is unknown if the manufacturer was notified of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 79,000. Jc.
Tl-the contact owns a 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan. The contact stated that the clock spring failed. The contact stated that while driving the air bag error warning indicator illuminated. The contact stated also found that the vehicle horn was not working when the contact attempted to use the horn failed to respond. The contact advised the dealer did not provide the diagnostic report yet, however, the dealer stated that the clockspring failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer also stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v483000 (air bags). The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate mileage was 44,000 li.
Clockspring in the steering column has failed causing air bag light to come on and on one instance the blinkers did not work. A minor cracking first was heard in vehicle during turning. Eventually a turn was made and the airbag light came on and no controls on the steering wheel worked.
After driving my 2011 Tiguan fine a couple times earlier in the day, I came back to my parked car, and turned it on. When I did this my airbag light came on with an "error: airbag" message on the display. After this happened, I notice the horn and other electrical features of the wheel didn't work. I took it into the shop, and their said the clock spring needs replaced. It wasn't until after all of this that I found out there had been a recall. I was never notified of this recall before. Although the clock spring needs replaced, the vw service center said they cannot get the clock spring part to replace it. They couldn't tell me a time that the part would be available.
As I was turning the steering wheel with the vehicle in motion, I heard a clicking sound and then a snap. The airbag light immediately came on and all electronic controls on the steering wheel and the horn ceased to work. I had the cover put on based on the previous recall, which obviously failed. I took it into the dealership and after a hard fight, had them replace the clock spring. They refuse to acknowledge that the issue with the horn was related to this; however, I have read several other complaints indicating the same issue. Currently, they have not been able to repair my horn.
My steering wheel clicks while turning, air bag light is on, horn and steering controls don't work. I contacted the dealership who told me this was a common issue and the recall to fix it had been done in 2015 by the previous owner. I was told I would have to pay to fix it this time. So vw gets to claim to fix the problem by supposedly putting a new clock spring in, that fails in the same time frame as the previous defective clock spring. This is ridiculous. Will never buy a vw again.
Clock spring in steering column broke when turning steering wheel. As a result, airbag light has illuminated, indicating an airbag fault. Airbag error also indicated on the dashboard information screen. In addition, all steering wheel buttons have stopped working. Upon researching, this has been a known issue, and also a recall item. In calling the local dealer, I was referred to vw of America for assistance. They looked into my VIN, snd informed me that my vehicle had already been in under recall to have the clock spring replaced (2016), and that they would not cover any further work related to this issue on my vehicle. It is my opinion that Volkswagen, under the original recall, replaced the clock spring with the same, or even a more inferior quality part. Thus leading to an unsafe condition, in an airbag system fault. This recall should be expanded to rectify any 'supposed" prior fixes the vw had done, as so many are having issues after having the recall work done.
Tl-the contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the steering wheel's clockspring malfunctioned. The former caused the air bag light to illuminate and the steering wheel's gauge cluster became inoperative. The contact stated that a clicking noise sounded from the steering wheel, while turning, and that the sound became increasingly worse with each turn. The contact is an independent mechanic who disassembled the steering wheel and found that the ribbon cable had fractured inside of the steering wheel's clockspring component. Winner Volkswagen - 1387 north dupont hwy, dover, DE, 19901 was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was out of warranty. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact cited NHTSA campaign number: 15v483000 (air bags) as the cause of the failure. In addition, the contact cited part number: 5k0. 953. 569. L as, manufactured on July 9, 2013, as evidence of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000. Ad.
Takata recall / clock spring, why is every other model in this year covered accept for the Tiguan? I am a single mom and can not afford this part. I have already taken it to the dealer and they can't help me. All I did was try to parallel park and the steering column started clicking and the airbag light came on. There is no horn or airbag or steering controls. This is extremely dangerous. Please help me!.
Airbag light came on. It was the exact issue described in vw recall notice recall number 15v483000 recall date 08/04/2015 component air bags:frontal the recall notice said ifthe airbag light is on and the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement, dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring. In March of 2016 vw said they performed the recall work by cleaning the clock spring, not replacing it. The issue for me is vw should have replaced the clock spring as described in the recall notice.
Clock spring failed twice causing passenger airbag light to fail and horn does not work. First repair was under warranty and 2nd repair was under the recall. Dealer said I have to call vw too cover it and vw customer service said it will not be covered until a 2nd recall is ordered. So far vw has no plans to recall it again on their own.
Tl-the contact owns a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the seat belt chime on the passenger side started to sound and the passenger side air bag warning indicator began flashing. The contact noticed that the only thing that was on the passenger seat was a cell phone. The contact removed the cell phone from the passenger seat and the chime stopped, then the contact slightly placed her hand on the passenger side seat and the chime started again. The contact drove the vehicle to the dealer south motors Volkswagen at 17930 s dixie highway miami florida 33157 for a diagnosis, they kept the vehicle from 04/13/18 until today 04/17/18, their diagnosis was, that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and that a head engineer was going to evaluate the vehicle on 04/18/18. Air bag recall - air bag light came on and steering wheel controls do not work including horn. Took car in and dealer showed there is a recall for this specific issue/model but not for my specific VIN.
The electronics in the steering wheel started going out, finally nothing on the steering wheel to do with electronics will work, no airbag no horn no cruise control no stereo buttons no other controls this problem is related to the clock spring, and so I took it to a dealer . The dealer said it had already had the recall done , they put a cover over the electronic clock spring, they said back when that this would fix the problem , well it doesn't fix the problem , it may delay it , until the car is out of warranty . My daughter drives this car, without an airbag now because vw and pignataro vw refuse to properly deal wit the problem. The cover does not work , the clock spring will break , and the airbag light will come on . Leaving the occupant open to injury or death in head on collition. This is a sham that the company will not fix the problem . They said it had been fixed so they are no longer liable . It is not fixed !!!! people are going to , or are dying because of this !!!.
