The airbag warning light came on, and the controls on the steering wheel do not work, and the horn will not work.
When backing out of a parking spot, I heard a crack from the steering wheel. An error: airbag warning light came on, and the horn and steering wheel controls stopped working. This appears to be a clock spring failure. I believe this vehicle was subject to a previous recall for this part, and it was probably replaced under previous ownership. Will be taking it to the dealer ASAP.

When pulling out of my driveway, I heard a tearing sound coming from my steering wheel. Following the noise, my airbag warning light came on. The airbag is deactivated per the owners manual and will not function properly in an accident. I realized later on in my drive that the controls on the steering wheel and the horn also do not work. It is quite dangerous to drive as another driver that day swerved into my lane without checking and I had no method of alerting the driver because my horn doesnt work nor do I have the protection of an airbag. I got my car diagnosed with vw and they confirmed that the clock spring has malfunctioned and needs to be replaced. This is the same issue that caused vw to recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles up to I believe the 2012 model year. This recall was subsequently investigated by the NHTSA up to I believe model year 2014 but I do not know the results of that investigation, clearly vw has not addressed this prevailing issue or properly encompassed all affected vehicles as my model is 2016 and it is still happening.

Oct 19th, 2017 clock spring broke, while exiting out of parking lot, followed by airbag warning light appearing on dashboard, along with alarm sound. As I continued to drive on side street, I was not able to use my horn as another started to enter my lane. Upon return to parking lot, while car was in drive, my steering wheel locked up. I brought the car into my dealership for repairs that next morning (10/20) March 15th, 2018 the clock spring failed for 2nd time, so I brought it back to the same dealership for repairs (air bag warning light came on same as before) and yesterday may 14th, 2018 the clock spring failed for 3rd time. I requested a tow truck to transport the car to the same dealership, as I do not feel that this car is safe to drive at this time. It is currently being serviced to replace the clock spring.
Takata recall I bought this car on 2015,used with 35. 000 miles, and I got warranty. While I was driving on highway to take my little kids -18 month old daughter, and 2 months old boy,on the daycare,I heard noise, like clicking ,and like a broken thing. I tried to use the horn. It didnt work. And on my dashboard I saw the warning light of airbags. And all the electrical was not working. I stopped in oneside of highway and called my husband. It was really scary situation. The steering wheels is to hard to turn left and right. I panic about this, because I have little kids that I have to take at daycare everyday. I start searching about this issue when I saw the recalls . For Volkswagen Tiguan ,2014. I called recalls customer service. The person who answered his name is greg g and he told me I had to go ,to do an diagnostic screening for my vehicle. So I went in a vw dealer here in austin . And there they figured out. The air bag clock spring was broken. After him a lady named evelyn f. Called me to ask also for the diagnostic screening,to fix the problem. After I sent to her the paper I got from vw. She called me and said we will not do that. It is not our problem. I am really anxious about this. I don't have another vehicle to move. Everyday I am facing very dangerous and unsafe situations. I can't use the horn, while I am driving and I feel unsafe using the Volkswagen. I am europian and while I was living in europe. I was using always Volkswagen and for me was on top. Right know I cant believe how unsafe is for me and my little kids. I need a solution for my situation. Urgent solution.
2009 Tiguan 2. 0 tsi all wheel drive in 2012 I discovered some wetness in the Tiguan floor mat. (less then 3 years old car) I took it to vw dealership, they found a malfunction of the roof drain hose. The estimate was so high $700 that I figure well, I can live with a little wetness when it rains hard. 2012 to 2015 the car was at pizza ardmore vw several times (the same dealership) due to an ongoing red and orange warning lights on the dashboard. "check engine"including malfunction of the airbag. In may 2015 the engine completely stopped running. "you need a new engine" I was told, without providing me with any explanation in spite of my request. How come 25,000 mile engine brakes? nearly $8,000 for a new engine on a six year old Tiguan. Two year later, the car stopped running again, the engine will not start, all electric are shot, no radio, no light, no airbags, no power, all gone. Back to piazza ardmore vw, the car was then declared total loss, it was too expensive to fix. It all happened for two reasons. The vw manufacturer production defect of the drain hose. And lousy piazza vw dealership neglected to detect and fix the problem twice before it was declared a total loss. .

The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan. The contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the air bag control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
We have a 2011 Tiguan and the steering wheel clock spring has failed (per the vw dealer), initiating the airbag monitoring indicator light to illuminate. Also, due to the clock spring failure, the horn, the airbag, and all electronic controls on the steering wheel do not work. This is the same reason as for an active recall involving 420,000 Volkswagens, but this VIN is not included in that recall. There were no accidents with the vehicle, and nothing done to have caused this failure. The vehicle was stationary when the airbag warning light came on.
