Engine Burning Oil Problems of Volvo S60

The contact owns a 2015 Volvo S60. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start-up. The vehicle was towed to lafontaine Volvo cars of farmington hills (24730 haggerty rd, farmington hills, mi 48335, (248)579-1300) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the alternator and battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be repaired. Several days later after the vehicle was repaired, while driving 80 mph, the vehicle decelerated to 30 mph without warning. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed of misfires on two cylinders due to oil consumption. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 123,000.

Excessive oil consumption at 75k miles. Oil change was completed in November 2020 by Volvo authorized dealer/service. "no oil pressure" warning message came on on 3/19/21. Checked oil and it was nearly dry. Added 5 quarts of oil and called Volvo on 3/22/21 to report. Scheduled an oil consumption test but based on what I've read with other complaints, this is a known problem with Volvo and pistons/rings going bad. From reading other complaints, it seems Volvo may not be easy to work with on this. Why is this not issued as a recall?.

Extremely high oil consumption was eventually diagnosed by dealer as due to faulty piston rings, which were replaced at a highly-discounted cost on 1/17/20 at 100,573 miles. While driving the car on 1/16/21 (mileage was then about 105,000 miles) I got an alert that there was no oil pressure and car should be stopped immediately. After stopping, I determined that the oil level was in the normal zone. I then talked to the dealer, who said he thought it was an electronic issue and that I could drive the car home. Less than 20 miles later, an alert said the engine was shutting down, and the car limped to a stall at the side of a freeway exit. Car could not be started, and was towed to the dealer. Dealer has advised that the engine had failed and could not be repaired.

My car was excessively burning oil. It required multiple oil changes and I wasn't notified of the low oil until the oil was nearly empty. Volvo performed tests to confirm I had an oil consumption issue that cost over $500. The initial repair was to replace the piston rings. Now they've told me the pistons are scored from the lack of oil/consumption and I require a new engine. The lack of notifications of low oil and the damage to my engine pose a safety risk. I know this issue is occurring across a wide range of Volvos.

We believed the 2013 Volvo S60 was leaking oil but the mechanic from local service station did not find a leak. The local mechanic called boston Volvo service and was informed that the Volvo S60's has piston ring problems and to bring the vehicle to boston Volvo for confirmation. Excessive oil consumption between oil change intervals. Since the purchase of this car (2/1/2016) I have used fully synthetic oil (castrol). Oil level slowly drops between scheduled oil changes. Prior to the last scheduled oil change (1/10/2020) I checked the oil it it was very dangerously low. There are not ( as certified by ase auto tech and confirmed) no external oil leaks or evidence of oil in the engine compartment. This car now has 84. 000 miles on it and I'm afraid that it will damage itself even on the short commute my wife has to work. I continue to monitor the oil level now almost daily. I feel this is (daily oil check) absurd as clearly, per the owners manual, does not nor should not require checking and refilling oil this often. The car has shown this pattern of lubricant consumption since we bought it. The tailpipes have always had a heavy deposit of carbon since we bought it. I was told that "volvos run dirty' and that it was not of any concern. Now that I see a technical journel and TSB clearly indicating a problem with my specific car, this explains why. I understand the fact in 2012 Volvo assembly switched motor types (62 to 63?) during midrun. Indicative of a problem or issue. I believe my auto was involved. It is the auto maker's responsibility to ensure a safe automobile with a reasonable amount of maintenance (or pm) required. The condition my wife and myself have been experiencing is clearly not normal for any auto maker and evidently has existed since it left the assembly line. I ask only for the automaker to stand behind their own TSB flaw, perform the work needed to repair or replace all part/parts needed to resolve their TSB for my auto. Thanks for your time in review.

There is a �known issue with the piston rings� that causes the vehicle to burn through oil. Please see the attached. I, and all the other unsuspecting Volvo purchasers I am sure, would very much appreciate attention to this matter. Thank you for your time.

The car has been having an oil consumption issue. Trying to stay ahead of it, I was changing the oil every 5k with full synthetic. While driving on the highway, the car started vibrating, I received a message "reduce speed or shift up", and a blinking check engine light. Ultimately due to the high oil consumption I had a bent value and no compression out of the 4th cylinder. Volvo did not assist in the repairs or acknowledge any manufacturing issue since the car was not regularly serviced by a certified Volvo dealership and the warranty expired 3 months earlier.

Car is burning oil. No oil leaks detected via mechanic or loss on the ground. Have to put multiple quarts of oil per month. The "check oil pressure" illuminates typically when making a turn which is extremely disconcerting. This is a known problem for this vehicle, just google it. They are well aware that these cars were incorrectly rated with the amount of oil initially. Volvo has done nothing to remedy this situation even though it's a known problem.

The car suffers from high engine consumption, engine oil runs out prior to oil change intervals with no evidence of oil leaks or oil burning). This can cause catastrophic engine failure while driving. The high oil consumption has been documented by the dealer and shared with the manufacturer. Volvo has even issued a technical journal that attributes the cause to faulty piston o-rings. Manufacturer didn't issue a recall and refuses to address the problem. There are several similar cases described in Volvo forums and other social media channels, that have not received any cooperation from Volvo.

Car is burning oil. I have to replace the oil every 2-3 months with no warning as to when it is coming. The "check oil pressure" light comes on, normally when the car is in motion (specifically, making a turn), when there is already barely any oil in the car leaving me very little time to get it to a shop to replace the oil. A couple of days later (if not that same day), the check engine light will also come on. I went directly to Volvo south shore for them to do an oil change on June 21, 2019 and my "oil pressure" light flashed on August 16,2019. By August 23, my "check engine" light came on so I took it to the nearest shop. They ran the diagnostics report and told me the light came on because there wasnt a drop of oil in the car. Anytime I take it into Volvo to get checked, they say they cannot do anything unless the "check engine" light is currently on but its not like I can bring it to them when it does because its not safe to drive to them/wait a few days for an appointment! by that time, I can feel the car giving out and its not like I can take it another 20 miles to see them! the fact that this issue has not been properly addressed is astounding. Its not safe and it should not be the individual's responsibility to replace an engine this soon!.

Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Volvo S60. The contact stated that the engine would burn excessive oil as the oil light would flash intermittently; the contact would frequently replace the oil when the oil light flashed. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would shake and stall without warning. The contact took the vehicle baum boulevard automotive 4741 baum blvd, pittsburgh, PA 15213 where the spark plug and coils were replaced; however, the failure had reoccurred soon after. The contact then towed the vehicle to star Volvo cars greensburg 5200 us-30 b, greensburg, PA 15601 where the vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was given an estimate of $7,000. 00 for the repair; the vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA campaign number: 13v592000(engine and engine cooling) which she linked with her failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000. Jo.

The check engine light came on. I took it to a mom & pop mechanic that I use. They determined that the problem is that the car is burning oil. It needed 3 quarts. They researched on-line and found a 'technical journal' released by Volvo USA to it's service departments entitled 'high oil consumption'. 16 different Volvos (models and years) are listed in this journal. My car is one of them. Volvo knows there is a problem, the car is unsafe to drive and yet there has been no recall for the cars. Local and corporate Volvo denied me financial assistance with this because the car is 'too old, with too many miles'. But it is a known problem and the problem is also with newer models. So the fact that my car is older shouldn't matter. My car has the engine that has the defect. Shouldn't have to rebuild the engine with only 116,000 miles. Obviously, if they know of 16 cars that have this issue, it has happened before and without being fixed, it can't be driven. Both local and USA contacts treated my request as an isolated event, not a part of a bigger problem - about which they have knowledge. Again, this is a known defect!.

The oil was changed at 85,000 miles. At approximately 90,000 miles, the low oil pressure light flashed on and immediately disappeared when making turns. The sensor light did not remain on the dashboard. There was no evidence of oil leaking. After a couple of days, the engine began knocking. The oil level was checked and was low. Oil was added to the car. The car was taken to the Volvo dealer for a diagnostic check. The dealer representative stated that no warning light indicators showed during the diagnostic check. The engine was starved of oil and needed to be replaced. He mentioned that for this model and year, new vehicle owners that still had a warranty were asked to come in and have piston o-rings replaced because of excessive oil consumption. We were not made aware of this issue.

Burning excessive oil and not giving a warning light. Driving down the highway when I heard a knock coming from the car so I stopped checked everything and noticed there was no oil on the dip stick and I just changed the oil 5 weeks ago. The engine now knocks and can barely be driven.

Like many of the complains listed for this make and model, my 2012 Volvo S60 is consuming oil between oil changes with no warning light of low oil pressure showing up. There is no smoke or puddles indicating burning oil or an oil leak. We try to keep a close eye on the oil because the dealer said since it's a turbo it needs extra oil between changes. About a year ago the oil trap was changed because it was leaking. Recently, the car started running rough, like it needed spark plugs,(though it was not time) then the check engine light came on. We found out the 5th cylinder stopped firing and I have a warped head now because of the engine getting too hot. The week before, I could smell the car was burning rich, now I realize it was because of the 5th cylinder and very likely the 'gunk' from the stopped up oil trap. Everything leads back to the oil issue.

I have owned my 2013 S60 Volvo for 3. 5 years. About 2 years ago, I started noticing that my car was burning/ consumption an excessive amount of oil between oil change intervals. I get my oil changed on the recommended schedule, but I always have to add oil before the next scheduled service. I started doing research and it appears that a recall was done for some cars, but my VIN was not included. It also appears that many other people are having the same problem. People pay a lot of money for these cars and to have a major component failure is not acceptable. Excessive oil consumption - burning or consuming at least 5 quarts of oil every 2k-3k miles, between oil changes. Our only notice is when oil is below 5-quart range, when we receive a dash warning noting to stop engine. Car holds 7. 25 quarts of synthetic oil. Well know documented throughout the web and known to Volvo mechanics, although more recognized with 2011-2012 S60. Stop engine notice received when starting car. Fortunately able to uber to auto supply and add 5quarts to drive home. Occurred on two occasions, wherein the second instance we researched, reached out to Volvo mechanics and in the process of contacting dealer and Volvo for follow-up. It appears that several instances have resulted in engine failure and/or $5k or more in personal cost to fix piston/value issue or replace engine.

Vehicle burned through all oil causing engine failure with no warning from vehicle electronics (check engine light came on as engine began to fail; was able to travel to closest mechanic). Vehicle dealership said this is a known issue that has had previous recall (for oil pressure warning) for other of the same model year but not this particular vehicle.

My 2012 S60 has less than 63k miles and it is burning oil. I've not seen any leaks or exhaust smoke, so I assumed all was well. Dealer ship advised it's normal for a Volvo to loss 1-2 quarts of oil between oil changes. Recently the engine failed with no warning, and warranty is out. Can't believe a 2012 veh. Would have such engine problems and Volvo customer service does not acknowledge the problem.

The car is using oil like crazy. Going thru 3-4 quarts every 2000 miles. Started at 40541 when serviced, they noted it was a quart low. I am now at 79000. & the problem has just gotten worse. I spoke to dealer about this & they acted as if they had no idea what it could be or why. They agreed to do oil consumption test (they said was the next step in protocol) when I told them that I had read that this was a major problem & I had copy of the service bulletin that had been issued. They even told me mine was not included, that the t6 models were the ones with the issue. That is not true. Took it back again after 2000 miles & I was barely showing any oil on the dipstick but they told me to bring it in & not to add oil. I didn't want to drive it this low. I get it over to the dealer which is 40 min away. They checked it & gave me a loaner but made me pay $150. I asked what this was of since they said the loaner would be provided for free & they said it was "tax". It has been 7 days & I haven't heard anything. They haven't touched my car. They called after 5 days & said that they were waiting to hear from their rep. I don't know if I should call Volvo north America myself, or give the dealer more time. I don't have much faith in them at this point. I feel they act secretive & won't be honest about problems. I hope they prove me wrong & restore my faith in Volvo. I was so excited to buy a Volvo & was looking forward to having this car for a long time. I was even considering getting a Volvo SUV. This is a problem that many are having. It seems to be the piston & rings. Some have had to have new engines bc the piston & rings didn't help.
