1 Car Stall problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 03/10/2021

April b2021. I was driving on the highway and my vehicle stalled . I immediately pulled over and got out the car fearful of my safety I called a tow truck to tow the car. The car was towed to a Volvo dealership which refused to diagnose the car. So I got it towed to a certified shop. I was told that two cylinders lost pressure and I need a replacement motor. What? I never received any warning lights , no low oil pressure light. I followed the maintenance schedule. How is this . I've contacted Volvo America and am waiting. I find it strange that the Volvo that I've been using for the last four years suddenly refused to look at the car. I'm learning that seized engines in this particular make and model is common right around 100,000 miles.

8 Car Stall problem of the 2016 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 12/18/2015

Purchased a brand new 2016 Volvo S60 - the car at incident date had 200 miles on it. While driving in traffic on a California freeway - the car lost all power, steering, lights, etc while in the number 4 of 7 lane freeway at night. The car was blacked out, no lights, no power, no engine, stalled without power in the middle of the freeway. - we were almost killed as a result of this incident. There were numerous collisions that occurred behind and around us as a result of this car being dead in the water in the middle of the freeway at night. I have video from inside the car as 18 wheel semis skidded sideways, almost killing us at 60mph from behind - as well as many other cars. Fast forward to an explanation from Volvo - the dealer stated that the car told itself that it ran out of gas with 1/4 gas in the tank. Stated there was some sort of fuel sending issue and they were trying to evaluate. We still have heard nothing, other than it will be two to three weeks at the dealer - we havnt even had this brand new car that long.

12 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

The car had difficulty in starting all of a sudden. It appeared to be an electronic ignition problem. After a few starts, warning signals started coming on. First was "engine under performance" and then it was "break failure". The car was stopped and towed to Volvo dealer. The dealer indicated that the car's fuel pump / lines were designed and installed outside the weather shielded housing. The salt used for snow melting corrodes these lines and several cars show up with this issue. So they replaced them and moved them to within the weather protected area. Searching the internet, I found several Volvo cars of this era have this problem and several occurred while driving - both loss of speed and break failure. My car was well maintained, regular oil changes with the synthetic oil and maintained by Volvo dealer or specialist. I also use the recommended 91 or 93 octane gas, so it cannot be attributed to lax maintenance or lesser quality fuel. The online forums seem to have all kinds of diagnostics for this problem. If it was a design fault at manufacturer, as advised by the Volvo dealer, I would think it would should be investigated for recall.

17 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 05/02/2013

Driving home after purchasing the car (yeah), I was turning into a parking lot, so my speed was descending and the car stalled. I wrote it off as my fault because it did not happen again until 3 months later. Within the past 3 weeks the car has stalled while in motion approx. 6 times. Volvo stated the recalled part for this issue was replaced in 2009. I notified the dealer and have a appointment for repair, at my expense because it was already replaced. Meanwhile I will not drive the car due to the lack of safety. Wish I would have researched the car model before purchase.

18 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

19 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/12/2012

When turning a corner, the engine stopped, steering stopped working and lights on dashboard come on. This happened a second time two days later. Took to independent mechanic and he checked all work he had done in the past plus checked the whole car out and he could not find why the car stopped. Two days later the car again stalled out when in traffic - engine stopped, steering stopped working and lights on dashboard came on. Last two times this happened I was driving on a straight road. This has happened 5 times now in the last week. All times engine stopped working, I was driving between 10 and 40 miles per hour. After researching this problem, I found out that my vehicle had been recalled and at 53,333 miles the fuel pressure sensor was replaced by the dealer. Now 42,000 miles later it appears that it is once again the fuel pressure sensor. This is very dangerous especially since I do a lot of highway driving and also live in an area where children have been know to run out into the street. Not only is there a possibility of a car accident, but also the possibility of a child being hit if I cannot turn the car quickly to avoid the child. At this point I am afraid to drive the car and fell very unsafe even though Volvos are know for their safety. After reading numerous reports of many people having this problem with their 2004 S60 Volvos it makes me wonder why Volvo is not correcting this problem on all 2004 Volvo S60s that are having this same problem. My mechanic is checking on this problem and will replace next week if this is the real issue. Sometimes doors lock for no reason at all. Also I have had to replace the rear lights on this vehicle several times. Seems much more than normal.

20 Car Stall problem of the 2003 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 12/20/2011

Car experiences loss of power, stalling, sputtering and hesitation when gas pedal is pressed down. San luis obispo smith Volvo authorized dealer could not find any codes to explain this. Checked timing sensors, fuel pressure, rpm cam signals, eth system, air flow meter, map sensor. All checked out ok, dealer said all signs point to eta failing. Car stalls and loses power abruptly, I do not feel safe driving it anymore. There is a recall for models up to 2002, this 2003 S60 non turbo manual seems to exhibit the flaws of electronic throttle failure.

21 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 11/28/2011

I own a 2005 Volvo S60. When driving today to work, with no warning, the vehicle stalled. I was unable to control the gas and the steering became rough. Hitting the accelartor did nothing. I was able to slow the vehicle to the side of the road. Once I turned it off and back on it restarted. If this had happened on a highway, it could have resulted in a major accident. Research shows that this is a common problem with Volvo. There was a recall for these incidents for under years 2003 -and 2004- 07v226000 . The recall for the s40 covered through 2006 - 08v033000. A search of the internet forum shows that this is happening for a lot of the 2005 models as well. Please consider including these model years as this is a danger.

22 Car Stall problem of the 2005 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 07/22/2011

26 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 08/16/2010

1. Reference - odi id number : 10348993 the car stalled again on the highway and I was able to manage to pull over safely. 2. This time it was diagnosed with the fuel pressure sensor. The dealer and Volvo customer care rep stated that the recall is not applicable to the car because the last 6-digit VIN [xxx] is out of range of 335112 to 372809. The Volvo customer care rep also stated there is no guarantee if the problem will not happen again within the 12 month part warranty after it's fixed. I feel very unsafe driving the car now, not knowing when the problem occurs again and could cause a fatal crash. 3. Dealer replaces fuel pressure regulator.

27 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 08/09/2010

1. Vehicle stalled 2 times, last year and on 08/09/2010 while driving on highway. I was able to restart both time. The second time I was able to restart after 5 minutes and drive to the nearby the Volvo store dealership. 2. The dealership diagnosed the problem and determined the battery was the issue. However I see 2 recall campaign id numbers: 09v483000 and 07v226000 which may be the root cause of the problem. I talked to the service manager at the Volvo store dealership (1051 w. Webster Ave, winter park, FL 32789 - 407-628-0550) but the dealership won't look at it because they said my car is not shown up for recall in their Volvo database. 3. Replace the battery.

30 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 12/12/2009

2004 S60 Volvo stalls while driving. Most recent occurrence stalled while turning, forcing the driver to drive off the road to avoid traffic. Car has been known to stall multiple times day. . . 2004 Volvo S60, stalls /cuts-off while driving for no reason. Dealer unable to diagnosis problem.

32 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 03/10/2009

Displays "check engine" most of the time and downloads to a fuel pressure sensor. Auto hesitates periodically and has on 4 separate occasions stalled completely. 07v226000 has a recall for this exact problem but Volvo says my VIN not affected. Seems from seeing other complaints with same problem that Volvo underestimated their problem.

33 Car Stall problem of the 2003 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 12/10/2008

On 12 Dec, 2008, my 2003 Volvo S60 stalled with no warning while traveling on a busy highway at 60 mph. I pulled to safety (vehicle was in "limp home" mode) and had the vehicle towed to the dealership (park place Volvo). Since the vehicle started right back up and presented no codes, I was told there was nothing wrong and given a bill for $418 (for tow and diagnostic check). Approx. 1 month later, vehicle presented same problem; it stalled, without warning, while driving. . . Creating a great safety risk for the second time. I had vehicle towed again to same dealership, and since vehicle started right back up with no codes, I was told there was nothing wrong. Dealership could not get vehicle to duplicate problem on either occasion. However, to appease me, dealership did replace accelerator pedal. . . Vehicle still presents same stalling issue, and intermittently goes into "limp home" mode for no apparent reason. This will undoubtedly cause a serious accident, as it is obvious, from the numerous complaints on this issue, that this is a mass defect.

34 Car Stall problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 08/30/2007

I have a 2004 Volvo S60. In the past one year it keeps stalling both in motion and when going into drive from park. This creates a dangerous situation while operating the vehicle, especially when in motion at highway speeds. I have taken the vehicle to Volvo authorized service twice with no resolution. The last stall was on August 30, 2007 resulting in the car being towed to Volvo service. A recall was issued on 2004 s40 due to a similar complaint, but I was told that the recall did not apply since the vehicle was an all wheel drive.

35 Car Stall problem of the 2002 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/21/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Volvo S60. The vehicle unnecessarily goes into uneven engine idling when driving between 10-30 mph. The failure prevents the brakes from working properly. When depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle would continue to roll instead of stopping. When the contact took the vehicle to the dealer, they replaced the throttle, installed a new ecm, and replaced the mass air flow pipe. The current mileage was 63,600 and failure mileage was 59,554. Updated 12-12-07. There was a mass air flow failure. Updated.
