2 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/07/2025

The car has “detected” a crash many times and automatically stopped even on the highway. It jerks and to slam on the brakes and then keeps going. It’s very dangerous and I have a strong theory it’s the model in general and not an isolated situation with my car.

3 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 12/13/2023

I believe that there is a material or design defect in the front brakes of this car that is leading to the premature failure of the front brake rotors. Two sets of front brake rotors have been replaced on the car due to excessive warping in the first 15k miles of operation. I purchased the car in June 2022 as a certified used car with roughly 9k miles on it. As soon as I drove it I could tell the brakes had a problem due to a high vibration level in steering wheel and throughout the car upon brake application above 30 mph. The dealer agreed and replaced the front rotors. The replaced parts were retained by the dealers under Volvo's warranty terms in November 2023, after roughly 4500 miles on the new rotors, the car again developed a noticable, although less severe, steering wheel vibration upon braking. In December 2023, with 6k miles on the front rotors, a dealer (different from the original one) again replaced them under warranty due to warping. I can't speak to the care given in operating the car prior to my acquiring it, but my wife and I are very gentle drivers. For comparison, we owned a 2001 Volvo s80, purchased new, for 16 years and about 120k miles and in that time replaced the front pads once, and never had to replace the rotors.

6 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 10/08/2022

My car developed a severe shake in the steering wheel and pulsing in the brake pedal while under braking. The problem has worsened to the point that braking at high speed creates a serious shaking. I took the car to the dealership and they diagnosed the problem as warped rotors. The car started this with less than 15000 miles on the car. The dealer contacted Volvo to fix under warranty due to the defective parts. Volvo declined to fix the rotors because they are a "wear item". This is not normal wear. In fact, during the inspection (10/8) it was noted that the pads still have plenty of life and would not need to be replaced. If the situation were that I had worn out the pads and rotors, I would understand Volvo's position but the warpage is abnormal. When I called in to schedule the initial inspection the technician I spoke with agreed that this is unusual for an S60. When I asked if the rotors would warp again after replacement, I was told by the dealership they have never seen someone come back with warped rotors after replacing them. If it were environmental or driving habits, you would expect this problem to return after replacing the rotors. The warped rotors are a known issue with Volvo. If you search the swedespeed. Com website, you will see numerous reports of S60 owners having the same problem. The dealership claims the reason my rotors are warped is because of rust build up causing hot spots and that the car must have sat outside in the rain a long time. This car has been garaged its entire life and is driven daily so rust buildup is not an issue. This rotor and pad combination is defective and fails prematurely.

7 Service Brakes problem of the 2022 Volvo S60

9 Service Brakes problem of the 2013 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/31/2022

City safety feature is triggering on intermittently with no reason to trigger. It occurs when initially accelerating. City safety applies the brakes and stops the car violently. Occurs when light or dark. Has occurred several times within the past week. The feature can be manually turned off and now is with every ignition start. The default is for the feature be on, so turning off is required every time the car is turned on.

10 Service Brakes problem of the 2013 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 10/24/2021

I started losing brake pressure rapidly about a month ago. Took it to a shop and they recommended replacing the master cylinder. The repair was completed and the braking improved for about 2 weeks and then I lost all brake pressure. The vehicle was not safe to operate and I had it towed back to the shop once again. Again they suggested replacing the master cylinder. We completed that repair and I had brake pressure for about three days. Then my low brake fluid light came on. As of right now my pedal is squishy and I have to put brake fluid in every 24 hours. There are no external leaks but we can’t figure out what the issue is. It’s become a serious safety hazard. Possibly an internal leak into the brake booster. It’s also a common issue among other Volvo owners of this year and model.

11 Service Brakes problem of the 2015 Volvo S60

13 Service Brakes problem of the 2016 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/09/2020

The brake suddenly lost braking power after the brake pedal was depressed at a red light on a local street. Every time I press the brake pedal after the incident, I could hear a sound of air leaking somewhere behind the pedal. Other systems seem fine and I managed to roll the car back to our parking lot about half a mile away, and had the car tolled to a local dealer the next day. I was told later by the dealer that it's caused by malfunction of brake "booster" or vacuum pump(?) and repaired it at a cost of ~$2500. 00.

14 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/03/2020

the brake fluid is low stop safely message came on at less than 87 miles on the odometer while the engine was running on my driveway. A Volvo dealer stated the following: fluid was low no external leak found topped off brake fluid to full mark the brake fluid is low stop safely message came on again at less than 191 miles on the odometer while I was driving on a local road at about 35 miles an hour speed.

16 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/05/2019

Tl- the contact leased a 2019 Volvo S60 t6. The contact stated that upon leasing the vehicle, the lane keep assist, a feature that automatically corrects the driver's steering when drifting at a high rate of speed. The contact stated that when he tested the feature, the feature only worked, according to him, 10% of the time. Another feature on this vehicle was the collision avoidance feature where the vehicle will make an abrupt stop if it senses any obstruction while in motion. The contact stated that this feature failed to operate as needed when it was tested. The contact also stated that while driving at 15 mph, the vehicle made an abrupt stop on a wide open road, no objects were in the contact's view when the occurrence happened. The contact stated that a warning light flashed as the vehicle made the abrupt stop. After the contact experienced these failures, the contact notified the manufacturer of the failures. The manufacturer told the contact to take the vehicle to his local service center. He returned the vehicle to the dealer(Volvo cars of queens 207-22 northern blvd, bayside, NY 11361 718-428-2118) where he was informed that issue was not a widespread issue but there were familiar with this defect. He was informed that there are no recalls on the vehicle; the contact was given a loaner vehicle and informed the contact that a diagnostic would be performed. He was informed that an investigation would be launched with the manufacturer to investigate this defect. The vehicle had not been returned to the contact. The failure mileage was unknown. Jo.

19 Service Brakes problem of the 2013 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 02/03/2016

On Feb. 3rd, I was pulling into a parking space in front of a store when my S60 r type Volvo began to accelerate on its own and reached very high rpm. My foot was not even on the accelerator as the car normally idles fast enough to perform parking maneuvers. I hit the brake but the car continued to move. It jumped the sidewalk; hit the building and proceeded to dig a hole in the flowerbed at the store's front. This all happened in the length of a parking space. I can¿t remember whether I shut the ignition off or of the engine stopped on its own shortly after the collision. Neither the airbags nor the pedestrian avoidance braking system deployed. I hit the building so hard that the brick cracked inside and out of the structure. The door is still inoperable.

20 Service Brakes problem of the 2013 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 08/17/2015

Automatic brakes came on when turning out of my neighborhood onto a main road. It's was 7am and there were no cars around me at the tome of the initial incident. There was nothing near me but empty streets. I turned back into my neighborhood to figure out what happened and saw notification of automatic braking on my dashboard. I turned my car off and restarted it to try and leave my neighborhood again but the dance thing happened in the exact same spot. Still no traffic or anything around to trigger that. Very dangerous!!!.

21 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/28/2015

This report concerns the failure of the parking brake assembly on mid 2000s Volvo sedans and specifically, a 2006 Volvo S60, 2. 5t. Specifically, a DE-lamination of the parking brake shoe assembly, which results in a tendency for a metal component of the shoe assembly to dislodge and jam between the brake pad and rotor, resulting in the brake suddenly locking up with no warning. While the event giving rise to this report occurred at approximately 20mph, at high speeds, a brake jam event of this nature could result in serious injury or death. The onset of the DE-lamination of the parking brake shoe assembly occurs with no warning, other than a mild bumping noise when the vehicle is placed into reverse or drive at low speeds. Upon inquiry to several Volvo-specific repair shops, as well as multiple reports on online Volvo-specific forums, this problem is known to be a relatively common issue after approximately 4-8 years of normal wear and/or 50,000-100,000 miles of use on the emergency brake shoes. However there is no service bulletin issued by Volvo as to this problem.

22 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/20/2015

The 2. 4l 2004 Volvo S60 experiences erratic behavior and engine failure when operating multiple concurrent electrical systems. When these systems (operated within specified guidelines) are used concurrently they cause the following conditions: engine failure, loss of power steering, loss of brakes. The following is a list of electrical channels that have been used to trigger the engine failure: brakes, indicator lights (right or left) heated seats (x2) front windshield defrost multiple S60 model owners have reported having experienced this same engine failure which cannot be detected by the manufactures diagnostics test. When tested the battery, alternator and computer all present positive read-outs. . Read more...

23 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

The car had difficulty in starting all of a sudden. It appeared to be an electronic ignition problem. After a few starts, warning signals started coming on. First was "engine under performance" and then it was "break failure". The car was stopped and towed to Volvo dealer. The dealer indicated that the car's fuel pump / lines were designed and installed outside the weather shielded housing. The salt used for snow melting corrodes these lines and several cars show up with this issue. So they replaced them and moved them to within the weather protected area. Searching the internet, I found several Volvo cars of this era have this problem and several occurred while driving - both loss of speed and break failure. My car was well maintained, regular oil changes with the synthetic oil and maintained by Volvo dealer or specialist. I also use the recommended 91 or 93 octane gas, so it cannot be attributed to lax maintenance or lesser quality fuel. The online forums seem to have all kinds of diagnostics for this problem. If it was a design fault at manufacturer, as advised by the Volvo dealer, I would think it would should be investigated for recall.

24 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/08/2013

I was driving 35-40 mph when a vehicle 2 cars ahead of me had to make a quick stop. I did not see this happen in time, slammed on my brakes and consequently smashed into the back of the car in front of me, who then hit the car in front of him. I totaled my car. The passenger air bag deployed and filled my car with smoke (or whatever that is) however, the driver air bag did not deploy. I was rushed to a trauma center and my injuries include my back, neck and I lost a tooth from my face hitting the steering wheel. My chest and legs are covered in bruises from the seat belt. I am very lucky, however I do not like to think of what could have occurred if I was at a high speed and on the fwy. And the air bag did not deploy because it was defective, and perhaps it was not designed to go off in this particular incident? I hit head on, no logical reason to think the passenger airbag going off as it did, but not mine or driver side.

25 Service Brakes problem of the 2013 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 02/22/2013

Vehicle involved damage front and left frontal area. Speed 40-45 mph. No frontal or side curtain air bag and curtain deployment. Failure of collision warning system and electronical indicators, abs did not deploy.

26 Service Brakes problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/22/2013

Brakes completely gave out while I was driving on rt. 85 in atlanta. Fortunately I was able to get over to the shoulder and I didn't hit anyone. Called Volvo roadside assistance and they sent a towing company. Car is still in shop and not yet diagnosed. I'm terrified to get back into that car!.

27 Service Brakes problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 06/17/2012

This is the second occasion on which this defect has appeared, the prior incident happening in approximately March 2012, at a mileage of approximately 5000 miles. I have owned the car for just under six months. I live in a southeastern us state and travelled to my second home in florida. The car has been parked in florida fewer than 20 total days. On both of the last two occasions during which the vehicle was parked in florida, an animal was apparently able to climb deep into the underbody of the car and chew on wires controlling the dynamic traction stability control system, the antilock braking system, the cruise control system, and the Volvo city safety crash avoidance system. On both occasions, the internal car alert system detected the problem, alerted me, and Volvo agreed to cover the cost of the repairs, though today, on the second occasion, Volvo indicated they will not cover this form of damage in the future. I proposed to both my Volvo dealership and to the national Volvo customer care center that an appropriate form of shielding should be added to cover the wires controlling these systems to prevent an animal's access to them. To the best of my knowledge, this suggestion was ignored, as no special shielding was described/offered, despite the critical nature of these systems. This problem has never occurred with either of the other two vehicles which I regularly take to the same location, thus, I believe this is a design flaw in which either the materials used in these wiring systems are particularly attractive to whatever animal chewed the wires (e. G. Soy-based wire coating polymers perhaps), or more likely, the wires are not sufficiently shielded/jacketed to prevent such damage. In each case, since there was not a nearby Volvo dealership, I drove my vehicle back to the dealership from which I purchased it without functional safety systems.

28 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 10/17/2011

The contact owns a 2004 Volvo S60. The contact was driving 25 mph with cruise control activated when the brakes were depressed but the vehicle failed to stop. The contact crashed into five vehicles. The contact's vehicle was destroyed. The police were contacted and a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a private mechanic and the manufacturer was contacted. Updated 04/16/12 the consumer stated the cruise control was not functioning properly. The throttle remained open. Updated 04/25/12.

29 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 10/11/2011

Good afternoon, we have experienced a catastrophic failure of the emergency brake, whereby the brake lining of the e-brake is of an "organic" compound and according to the Volvo technician "swells" when it gets wet, causing the e-brake to lock-up. My bride was in our neighborhood when this occurred, causing the entire braking assembly and associated parts to be ripped and busted loose. Volvo charged us $2100 in parts and labor to "fix" this. Volvo techs did say that this happens alot, but alot at speed (faster than 25mph). Can you imagine this e-brake lock-up at highway speeds. How frequently has this happened? I have pictures of the affected parts. This is totally unsafe and Volvo knows about it.

30 Service Brakes problem of the 2012 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 09/05/2011

The active cruise control stops for no reason. This problem is intermittent. On a number of occasions (~20 times since I picked up the car), the car slows down as the traffics slows down. The car is almost at a stop (5-10 mph) and the emergency brakes comes on, the cars brakes hard & stops and the parking brake turns on. The alert "cruise control unavailable" show in the display. Thereafter the cruise will not engage. After I shut off the car and restart it, the cruise again works again. In addition to not performing as advertised, this represents a safety hazard.

31 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 01/12/2011

The contact owns a 2003 Volvo S60. The contact stated that the entire instrument panel failed, including all gauges and warning lights. In addition, the contact stated that the brakes were affected by the failure. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where the failure was diagnosed as the instrument panel control module. The manufacturer was contact and advised that the vehicle was out of warranty therefore, they were not able to assist with the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 89,000.

32 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Volvo S60

Failure Date: 10/28/2009

Driving 2001 Volvo S60 2. 4t at 30 mph, stepped brakes and they locked up (car has abs) causing complete loss of control. Went into spin and crashed over curb, breaking both passenger side rims and gauging rear tire. Had to be towed; one week later, car still in shop. Mechanic can find no reason for this. . . No fault codes on computer, fluids, wires, etc all fine.
