3 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 06/28/2011

I purchased a 2001 Volvo v7 wagon with 61,000 miles. (it was a one owner car that had been repossessed). Within a week, the car was going into neutral while I was driving on the highway and jerking. The transmission has to be replaced. Because of its age, Volvo refuses to help with the cost of replacing the transmission. Yet, no matter how old the vehicle, the transmission should have lasted much longer. Neither Volvo USA or Volvo International would help.

4 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 06/19/2011

'01 xc70 awd wagon, with automatic transmission. So automatic that it put itself in drive when shifted into reverse. The Volvo lurched forward at a daycare facility rather than backing out as was hoped a working transmission would do. Upon a cursory glance on the internet, this problem has been the defining characteristic of the 2001 model xc70 since built. Volvo should be held accountable for the rubbish they are selling, and I assure you, will be held accountable if this same situation occurs for someone else and there is a loss of life. I have never bothered complaining about the random electrical issues that have plagued this lemon since we have owned it, random door locks, window switches, dozens and dozens of light bulbs burned out, but the fact that my wife and infant daughter were left stranded without reverse or really a functioning transmission, on a 90+ degree day, make this a cause I will never be silent about.

5 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 06/08/2011

My V70 aways hesitates when shifting between r and d gear. And I can hear a loud clank!!! sometime it does a horrible up- or down-shifting around 25 mph. The transmission must get worse and worse since the "clank" continues everyday.

7 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 04/21/2011

A week after I bought my 2001 Volvo V70 xc the transmission started shifting hard, lunging between shifts and after about an hour of driving it was difficult to drive. The service tranny light and check engine light both came on after a violent shift from 3-2. Took car to lyle pearson Volvo in boise. Nate told me the computer needed re-programing from Volvo and an adaptive drive test was needed. I paid the $149. 00 for 45min (wow)! the next day it started again, only this time all shifts were "violent"! I called a Volvo dealer in a different city and they said the drive test was not done correctly. I then called nate at lyle pearson and he said to replace the b4 piston cover. 2 days later and the b4 piston cover was replaced and problem still occurs. When I called nate again he actually said " I wish I never even looked at it" and refused to re-do the adaptive drive test. Sending car to an auction. This is criminal.

The failure mileage was 83000 and the current mileage was 84100.

15 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Volvo V70

Improper shift of automatic transmission from reverse to drive and in certain slowing down condition which cause car to lurch (slow down as in making a right/left turn). Failure Date: 02/14/2009

Automatic transmission on 2001 Volvo V70 t5 is triggering check engine warning light on dash. No significant performance problems as yet but will likely be unable to pass my next emission test due to the check engine warning light. Need to know how to solve this without replacing the transmission.

19 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 01/29/2009

I recently had my 2002 Volvo xc70 looked at by a mechanic. Among other things, he said that with nearly 100,000 miles on the car, it was due for fresh transmission fluid. I drained about a gallon of fluid from the trans, went to the dealer and bought four liters of Volvo approved transmission fluid and put it in the transmission. Now the car won't shift into 3rd gear. I did a couple of searches on the internet and apparently this happens fairly frequently and the only fix is to tear the transmission apart. It's just !@#$% frustrating.

20 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Recurring transmission problem. Car jerks and stalls repeatedly at low speeds. Loud clunk followed by sudden acceleration or deceleration. Dealer has been ineffective at solving the problem.

21 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 12/08/2008

Transmission slams into gear when shifting at low gears. Shifting is violent. Car does not accelerate smoothly or predictably, making it unsafe to operate. Happens almost every time the car is driven. Took it to Volvo dealer, they recommended rebuilding the transmission (replacement transmissions not available). Took it to aamco and had the transmission rebuilt. Problem continued for 7 months. Continued taking it back and they continued to work on it until they were finally able to correct the problem.

22 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/20/2008

The transmission of my car makes my car lurch forward when going between gears. The rpms rev up and then the gear grabs, sending my car forward in a giant lurch. After almost hitting cars in front of me several times, I now make sure to keep extra distance between myself and the car in front of me. After having the "transmission needs maintenance" and engine check lights come on, the dealer has diagnosed a problem with the electronic system that controls the transmission. I am having this replaced for $500. 00.

23 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

The indicator light on the gear selector has burnt out. There's a 'signal-orange' colored indicator mark that tracks the gear selector against the slate grey color shift assembly put there as a safety feature so you know what gear you're in and don't accidentally take off in an unintended direction, forward or reverse, or roll into someone while unintentionally finding yourself in neutral. Well now at night unless you turn on the interior light, you can just guess what gear you're in because when it's dark in the cab you can't see at all what's what as far a gear selection. I find this remarkable. At age 49, with all the cars we've owned and all ive had until over 100,000 miles, never do I recall any dashboard type indicator lamps burning out, I thought they just made them that way because they're not replaceable or something. I assumed they were like neon or light emitting diodes that can never burn out and would function forever or until something physically broke them. Here's a tip for you folks at the NHTSA and your families: avoid Volvo's in parking lots at night, turns out we have only an idea of the gear we're in before the car starts moving, in the dark the lack of certainty provided by a manufacturing failure could prove dangerous. Volvo for life?.

Failure Date: 03/27/2007

- the contact stated that while driving the 2002 Volvo V70 xc cross country at the speed of 30 mph and trying to accelerate the vehicle stalled. The vehicle lost the ability to accelerate. The control panel lights turned on, and she pulled off to the side of the road. The contact turned the ignition off and called the Volvo mechanic. They advised her to restart the vehicle, and while trying to start the vehicle ,the instrument panel stayed on. The Volvo mechanic urged her to have the vehicle towed. 28 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 01/08/2006

With only 80,000 miles, after 5 years of driving, the engine is warning that the electronic throttle system' (ets) failed. The dealer and an independent repair shop only can replace the ets module at a cost of $1,200. The replacement part is actually the same as the failed part with no improvement. Searches on the internet showed that this part failed over and over again. When it failed the car could be driven in a limp along home mode, which I have had to use, making other cars pass me while this car could only go about 5-10 mph. The internet postings indicated that NHTSA was trying to work with Volvo to extend the factory warranty of this part, but with no settlement yet. Letting Volvo to continue to use known trouble-prone parts which should be resolved.
