Volvo V70 owners have reported 12 problems related to transmission gear slipping (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volvo V70 based on all problems reported for the V70.
I have a 2001 Volvo V70 with 110,000 miles. The transmission has been slipping for the last 2 years. Last week the car was barely driveable. My Volvo mechanic states that the transmission needs to be replaced (approx. $4700). I have heard of many other Volvo owners having the same problem.

Driving 25 mph going through the toll booth on the freeway, afterwards accelerating and immediately noticed transmission slip as the rpm gage went up and beyond 6,000 rpm. There was no sign leading up to the slipping. Afterwards I continued to drive for another 25 miles, stopped to check under the hood to see what happened. Nothing to do except drive home. The transmission continued to slip upon acceleration. The traffic began to stop and go for many miles. The transmission at some point after stopping wouldn't engage into any gear. I was unable move the car out of the fast lane. Called aaa for a tow truck and the chp. The car was towed to a Volvo repair facility where it was inspected. I was told that the transmission needed to be replaced by a new one or a rebuilt transmission, which in either case would cost in excess of $5,000. Transmission service was performed on this car 3-4 months prior to this incident. There was never any indication that the transmission was failing in this car. There were no warning lights or notices on the dash board to indicate a problem with the transmission. The vehicle is in a repair facility awaiting my decision to either replace the transmission or donate the car.
This car has been well cared since we got it at the day one. All schedule maintenance have been done at a Volvo dealer. We have spend over $7000 on repairs and maintenance over the years. But its transmission started to slip since Feb 2011 when there was only 100,000 miles on it. We took it to the dealer. They suggested a transmission fluid change. We followed their suggestion as we always did. But that did not resolved the problem. The transmission still does not work properly. We took it to the dealer again this oct, and the dealer said the transmission fluid was all black. Along with the problem we meet, they conclude the transmission is about to die, and the one fix is to replace with a new one which will cost $4500! we would expect the transmission of a well-care Volvo would last longer than 100,000 miles. As I did some research on internet, I found many 99-02 Volvo owners have the similar unfortunate issue. I would like NHTSA look into this issue, and initiate a recall on transmission of 2002 Volvo V70.

Transmission slips into lower gear when slowing down to turn a corner and then putting foot on accelerator. Volvo dealer recommends having body replaced at a cost of @2200 and it might not be the cure. Also, in June 2001 at 86,488 I had to have the left front strut mount, sway bar links and engine torque rod mount replaced. Updated 03/10/11.
My 2001 Volvo xc V70 transmission is also slipping and lurching. Lately this has been occurring on a daily basis. I have had no accidents, but when it slips and hesitates while pulling onto a main road my heart skips a beat hoping I won't lose transmission power with no way to get out of another vehicles path. My mechanic, who works strictly on Volvo and saabs, has told me he cannot guarantee that repairs or adjustments would correct the problem and that changes could possibly make matters worse (I. E. , complete transmission failure). I will be trading this car in to a dealer in next week or two. From what I've seen on this forum, Volvo is not owning up to this problem. I have also had power steering issues since shortly after purchasing used. Lots of noise in front and at parking speeds, total loss of steering power.
Transmission began slipping at about 80,000 miles. Replaced transmission last year, now jerks at 3rd gear. 92,000 miles.
Transmission slips when shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. This presents a serious hazard for collisions from the side and rear because the car does not accelerate from a stop or when crossing a street.
The contact owns a 2003 Volvo V70. While accelerating from a stop or driving on an incline, the transmission slipped when shifting from first to second gear. The vehicle is currently with the dealer and they stated that the transmission software needed to be reset. The powertrain and speed were unknown. The current mileage was 7,000 and failure mileage was 6,000.

I have a 2001 Volvo V70 awd station wagon. The transmission failed while I was driving with my 2 small children in the car. As I was lurching along cars were passing me at 55+ miles per hour, my family and I were placed in a dangerous situation and our safety was jeopardized. Luckily I was able to pull off to the side of the road before I was rear ended or hit by another vehicle. I took my Volvo to the local Volvo dealer 2 previous times regarding my transmission slipping and the car lurching, both times I was told that a transmission problem could not be detected. ?? this last time they had to acknowledge a problem exists because the transmission went out. I only have 71,000 miles on the car and I now have to pay $4,000 dollars for a new transmission. My service writer said he contacted Volvo north America and they would do nothing to help with the repair costs. My car is undriveable and has been in the service shop while we wait for the transmission repair to be completed. I have done some research and this problem seems to be pervasive in this model vehicle. Volvo north America needs to acknowledge this problem exists and help to repair these vehicles, that jeopardize their customers safety.
Vehicle transmission seems to slip, engine revs increase and vehicle looses momentum. Dealer has worked on the car three times. The last repair lasted several months but problem has resurfaced.
At approximately 7,000 miles, automatic transmission began to slip in shifts between second and third gear. Dealer "readapted" transmission using manufacturer's procedure in an attempt to correct slippage. Manufacturer's term for this problem is "shift flair" in which engine rpm increases during a shift making the car feel like it has temporarily lost drive or the transmission is slipping. In my experience with the problem, the engine rpm would significantly increase for a few seconds and during that period the car would lose power. Only the inertia of the rolling wheels could keep the car moving. If I let off on the accelerator and then immediately depressed it, the car would behave like nothing had happened. As more mileage was placed on the transmission, the shift flares or slippage became more frequent. Actions taken by the dealer include: readaptation of the transmission, significant road testing, installation of a temporary data recorder, application of new software, readapting the transmission, determine valve body on original transmission incorrectly torqued and retorque of valve body to factory specifications and culminating with the replacement of the original transmission. Despite the replacement of the transmission in early October, 2003 at 12,636 miles, the car again experienced a transmission shift flair on December 27, 2003 at approximately 18,400 miles.
2001 Volvo V70xc. Transmission lurches and slips. Vehicle involved in major accident in 2002. Volvo inspected vehicle and found no issue with transmission. The vehicle was inspected by dealer on two additional visits with same concern. Dealership could not find a problem. Took vehicle to independent mechanic who made an adjustment to transmission. Vehicle again lurching and slipping. Took to mechanic and informed a service report now indicated we needed to replace a valve assembly. Cost: $1,100-1,800. Call dealership and informed that the vehicle was out of warranty and they could not help. Phoned Volvo cars of north America. Informed the only recall was on fuel pump and the only recall on transmissions having similar problem was on their v90. Because of the age of the vehicle they could not assist me in resolving this claim.
