Volvo V70 owners have reported 4 problems related to vehicle shudder (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volvo V70 based on all problems reported for the V70.
When coming to a stop and the transaxle downshifts from 3rd to 2nd gear, it will lurch and a loud 'clunk' shakes the vehicle. This also occurs when accelerating, shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear; the transaxle will hesitate, engine will rev and makes a loud 'clunk' that shakes the vehicle when the gear change finally occurs. Also, if I need to step on the brakes suddenly and then re-accelerate, it really makes a loud 'clunk' as the engine will rev and go nowhere, eventually slamming itself into 2nd gear and frightening the occupants of the vehicle due to the loud noises and lurching.

The contact owns a 2001 Volvo V70xc. The contact stated that the vehicle would shake when applying pressure to the accelerator pedal at various speeds. The failure would only occur during moments when the vehicle was exhibiting low rpms. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was advised to have the transmission replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure persisted. The failure mileage was 115,000 and the current mileage was 123,000.

The problem is a grinding/vibration when the car gets hot. The dealer/Volvo say it is the viscouis coupling. Neither one know how to fix. The dealership said they have at least two brand new cars that they know about on their lot that have the same problem (wonder what they will do with these cars?). I think this is a very big problem. Please help. . . . . .

Car exhibits a shudder in the drive train - more noticable at speeds under 55mph. A pronounced shudder occurs when coasting or in trailing throttle between 36-44 mph. Dealership says it is just a 'characteristic' of the model. I am concerned that the vibration is caused by mis-assembled or imbalanced drive train components and will result in a catastrophic failure when being driven.
