Antilock system and stability tracking system failed abruptly during breaking. No crash occurred, only the system's warning lights came on and stayed on. Lucky I was not in a panic break position as then the abs would not have functioned. I have made arrangements to repair the system independent of the Volvo dealership since it is much cheaper and a more effective fix is possible than using Volvo parts which after web searching is clearly defective. Seems every vehicle with this system is failing at about 65 to 80k miles. My 2001 V70 t5 failed at 70k.

Abs control module failure. I was informed by two dealerships, north pointe Volvo and dyer and dyer Volvo, as well as Volvo professional repair (all located in the atlanta GA area) that this was a common occurrence. Well I experienced this yesterday. The automobiles' abs no longer is effective when this unit goes bad, leading to dangerous situations. It also leads to stalling, and shifting problems with the transmission which can lead to an accident, and almost caused me to have one yesterday. The part has to be replaced to the tune of nearly $1000. 00 I can procure the old part from the service manager. I was informed this was a design flaw as heat causes the deterioration of this module due to its location near the engine.

I just received word from a dealer that the abs control unit has failed. I was quoted approx 900 for this repair. This is not a normal wear and tear part and therefore I think NHTSA should force the question to Volvo as to whether or not this part was poorly designed and/or why do so many owners have this same problem. .

Since owning the vehicle (purchased used) I have had issues with the abs and tracs systems. I noticed if the car was "cold" in a cold climate, the abs/tracs system appeared to be functioning properly, if only for a few minutes. Otherwise, the abs/tracs system failed to function altogether. The brakes would fail completely when the abs module would transfer from functioning to non-functioning. The Volvo mechanic stated this was a common problem and that the abs module would need replacement at a cost of $700. My question is, if it's such a common problem concerning a vital safty part(the brakes) why has there not been a recall? this is one in a myriad of functional issues with this vehicle.
Mileage approx 115,000 when purchased now 120,000 within 8 months. Hardly hard use. Failure of ecm and O2 sensors, on two occasions the second within 1000 miles and 1 month of first repair. Caused the car to surge, if restarted might stall and generally become dangerous to drive. No warning of failure. Volvo dealerships well aware of problem and offered immediate and correct diagnosis prior to checking the computer codes, without needing much investigation. 2 dealers worked on the car one don bayer in washington and independence Volvo in charlotte. Instructed independence Volvo dealer to make car safe and roadworthy. Uploaded faults and downloaded onto vehicle, new software. Within 1 month new symptoms appear. At various times these lights show and reset abs warning, engine warning, traction control warning, speedo failure, check engine, service warning (even though service is just carried out). Symptoms include lack of throttle response when pulling away, when speedo fails. No warning of change in status means this happens during turning maneuvers with potentially dangerous or lethal consequences. Checking various sources note that abs module failure is common making the car potentially unsafe in emergency, not only for braking but during acceleration as the cars ability to pull at its normal rate is vastly reduced, adding throttle does nothing, but if the system turns back on again no warning, the speedometer just comes back to life ) this can cause unneeded fierce acceleration. I noted one death on the highway of a young woman who appeared to accelerate off the road during a benign maneuver and am concerned that this on/off speedometer/abs transmission problem might have been the cause rather than the ecm currently the focus of the investigation.
Abs control unit sporadically fails, abs and traction control lights go on notifying driver that these systems are not working. If the system fails at a critical time, could result in loss of control of vehicle.

Anti-lock braking (abs) controller failure leads to loss of abs and traction control. Manufacturer refuses to replace controller out of warranty.
The Volvo abs / trac control module is failing at an abnormally high rate. Local dealership replaces in excess of 5 of these per month. Volvo corporate office will not acknowledge any problem with this safety device, and otherwise refuses to discuss the high rate of failures. Other research, including a high demand for non-dealer acquired abs computer modules in the aftermarket industry strongly suggests that those units installed in vehicles are failing at an abnormally high rate. In my 1998 V70 wagon the abs & trac off indicators (warning lamps) randomly light. As a result the safety offered by the abs brake system becomes disabled over long periods of time. Every potential cause has been ruled out except for the abs computer module (abs / trac control module). This safety issue needs to be addressed by the NHTSA due to the impending risk to life that continued failures of this safety device will undoubtedly bring.
Abs module failed. Abs and tracking system warning lights came on/off.
When the brake pedal was depressed, the brakes didn't engage and the vehicle failed to stop, as a result the driver had to continuously pump the pedal to stop vehicle. Consumer stated there was complete and total brake failure. The consumer had the abs unit that was replaced. The check engine light illuminated. The dealer reset the light.
Abs / traction control module failed which resulted in loss of abs and traction control. It has come to my attention that this is a common safety issue with Volvos. According to my service writer at the Volvo this is a common problem with this model. The repair is also not cheap at approx. $650. 00. Excluded in the Volvo increased protection (vip) "limited" extended warranty.
Anti-lock brakes not functioning. Cause has been identified as a defective abs/tracs module, a known weak spot on 1998 model Volvo s/v/c 70 series.
Failure of abs control module. 1998 Volvo V70. Intermittent and partial loss of brakes, usually (not always) when going over bump. Sometimes brake pedal almost goes to floor before engaging. The problem started sporadically about four years ago (abs fault light with no noticeable problem). Several visits to dealer, but no remedy. About 18 months ago, problem became more severe with actual loss of brakes occurring. It seems from newsgroups that this is a very common problem with this year Volvo, so I don't believe it is a isolated incident.
Defective abs computer module.
I have a 1998 Volvo V70r awd and both the abs/trac warning lights had been going on and off for the past couple months. The light would come on for a few minutes then go off. I understand that this is a common problem with the vehicle and have now had the control unit replaced. The cost to replace the abs control unit was approximately $563. 60.
Intermittent outage of abs control module (tracs off/abs warning lights on). Dealer states the brakes will still work with the lights on/faulty part. However, I don't feel "safe" in the car and feel the part is faulty and should be recalled by manufacturer. Brakes have since hesitated on two occasions while stopping. There were no brakes for a split second and then the brakes slowly (2-3 seconds) regained power and control of the car. Numerous other owners have encountered the same problem as the dealer (superior Volvo) stated this is a common problem for this model.
The contact owns a 1998 Volvo V70. While driving between 10-60 mph, the engine revved. The vehicle shook and the brakes made a grinding noise, although they were not applied. The abs warning indicator light illuminated. The brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle stopped normally. The abs control unit (part number 860266) was replaced. The failure ceased for 30,000 miles before it recurred. The failure mileage was 22,000 and current mileage was 105,000.
Abs/ traction computer failure, premature brake failure, side airbag deployed falsely (Volvo v 70 awd cross country).
