Volvo V70 owners have reported 23 problems related to brake electric antilock (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volvo V70 based on all problems reported for the V70.
Loss of braking power while trying to slow on an incline of approximately 8%. Accompanied by "clicking" that sounds like abs engaging. Releasing brake and reapplying resolved. Speed approximately 15mph.

The abs / traction control unit on these cars fail in unreasonably high numbers. It's such a big business, that mechanics sell thousands of refurbished units on ebay. Volvo charges over $700 for the parts, and is avoiding repairing this item because I'm sure some actuary told them it's cheaper to pay claims and defend lawsuits than to protect their customers. I have not experienced an accident or crash as a result, but I'm sure hundreds of people have.

Abs module shows intermittent errors. When abs module has errors the abs system does not work. Dealer suggests that it be replaced at my cost of $915.

I've had numerous electronic problems with my Volvo V70 since I bought it in 1998. The vehicle has been brought back to the Volvo repair dealer for many repairs (I have organized documents of all the repair orders) clearly identified as "lost of power" while driving. Mostly on small roads and only once on an interstate. Originally started under warranty, I was told that the same problem was not covered outside of warranty when I spoke with the president of Volvo north America's secretary. I have had many parts replaced trying to correct the situation including two electronic throttle control units (totaling three if you include the one that came with the car). "loss of power", "stalling at traffic lights", "hesitation when pressing on accelerator", an other comments are all documented in the Volvo repair shop repair orders. The problems continued until throughout my ownership of the car. I finally gave up and sold it June 05. The repairs that Volvo did to my V70 would work for a while and then the lights would soon come back on. I'd put up with it for a while until the car started to become to dangerous to drive (hesitation) and then I'd bring it in for repair. Volvo tried different solutions and told me that the computer codes indicated different repairs, but to me it was always the same symptoms. I would be glad to share the entire book of repair orders over the 7 years (and 167,000 miles) that I owned the car. Again they were always done at a certified Volvo dealership.
Abs brakes activated under normal driving conditions, tracs off, rear wheel spin in slippery conditions even with the tracks on. Took to the dealer and they replace the abs control module (over $600). Car was behaving in an unsafe manner as the abs brakes would activate and prevent car from stopping for a few seconds until the abs system switched off.
While driving, the abs and traction control indicator illuminated. Both lights stayed for the duration of travel.
My abs/trac dash lights are simultaneously coming on, indicating that the abs is no longer working. Apparently this is a common problem with newer (late 1990's and on) Volvos due to a faulty abs computer module and Volvo isn't covering the repairs under a recall. The cost of the module is $500 (not including labor costs). I'm requesting NHTSA contact Volvo headquarters to demand a recall on this hindering abs safety problem.
Volvo cross country's from 1998 and possibly other model years are turning up with malfunctioning central control units for their abs . It is hard to get information from the dealership regarding this problem, but it is clear the malfunction is widespread in this model and that it adversely affects the car's braking and abs. Replacement of the part costs more than $500, which may prevent many Volvo owners from quickly addressing the problem, which according to independent mechanics, poses a significant safety threat. I know first-hand the malfunction caused a significant deterioration in my cross country's handling and braking. Because this appears to be a product defect that affects the car's safety, I sincerely hope regulators will encourage Volvo to do the right thing and issue a recall. Thank you.
Abs / traction control module failed which resulted in loss of abs and traction control. It has come to my attention that this is a common safety issue with Volvos. My mechanic from pro Volvo (tele# 732-303-0770)claims he changes 2 abs modules every week. The dealership even stocks 14 of these modules in its inventory. The repair is also not cheap at approx. $650. 00. Mr.

Consumer stated 2 other vehicles almost collided with each other, and a hydraulic sound was coming from brake pedal when brakes were applied, then vehicle vibrated and skidded across the lane of the highway.
Traveling under 60mph in center lane on dry pavement . Went to merge into left lane. Saw car approaching . While getting back into center lane immediately lost control of vehicle- unable to steer as wheel pulled and locked to the right and car simultaneously started to hop across 3 lanes of traffic spinning out of control. Brakes ineffectual. Crashed into guard rail turning 180 degrees. No airbag deployed inspite heavy impact with front side, driver side and rear of car. Concern regarding unexplained loss of control . Would like to prevent future injury/ fatality.
Brakes travel to within 1 inch of floor and are too near accelerator. Possible to simultaneously accelerate and brake at same time with a size 11/2 shoe.
I am filing this report because of the concern about a potential safety problem with the brakes. The problem is intermittent, has been taken back to the dealer five times, and cannot be resolved. Intermittently when applying the brakes there is a clicking sound and a strong vibration feeling on the brake pedal when braking. This clicking and vibration continues until the car comes to a full stop. Dealer states that this is the abs and is normal for this car. I don't know if its really the abs, but the problem happens at least 5-10 times per week under normal driving conditions when the abs should not activate. This is unnerving for the driver and makes us feel unsafe. There are other complaints on your website with the same symptons, but where the car stalled or the brake pedal locked up. I'm concerned that my problem with turn into a more serious problem, but the dealer says that nothing is wrong. I've recently found out that the brake systems and abs were redesigned in 2001 and this vibration and clicking problem was resolved in the redesign. Although the dealer now admits there is a problem, they say it cannot be fixed. As a result, I have a major safety concern and don't want to drive this car any longer. It's on lease and Volvo refuses to terminate the lease.

Traveling about 30mph, stepped on brake pedal, brakes did not activate.

During braking, the abs seems to randomly start functioning on its own, as it would during a panic stop, the brake pedal will pulsein unison with a moderate tapping sound emanating from below the rear seat, the brakes do not pulse physically, only the pedal pulse and the tapping occurs, the dealer was notified of the problem and consumer was informed that it was a normal function of the abs, however the service manager agreed that there was a problem and that Volvo was aware of it in a small number of other vehicles.

While driving and applying the brakes vehicle suddenly accelerated and stalled. Consumer was able to restart, and take the vehicle to the dealer. And mechanic replaced abs module but the problem recurred.
Anti lock brakes will grab, not stopping smoothly when pedal is deployed. Occupants are slung forward. This is common for this particular model, "qualitative problem". Please describe details.
Air bag deployed while car was in motion, followed by abs/tracs warning lights coming on. The abs no longer works after this occurs. This occurred intermittenly at first, but on a constant basis now. Mr.
While driving abs/ tracking light illuminate on dashboard. Please provide any further information.
