5 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 04/27/2013

I own a 2001 xc 70 Volvo which I just bought with 133900 miles last Friday April 26, 2013. The dealer showed me the maintenance records including a 3 month old California safety inspection report. On April 27, 2013, I was driving on a downhill stretch when all of a sudden, the car engine lost power, kicked like it wanted to jump ahead of me, all indicator lights flashed, and the car stalled and shut down rendering the brake and steering system inoperable. I had no means to control the car as it rolled down hill. I engaged the reverse gear causing the vehicle to stop. I called dealer right away. He told me to bring the vehicle to his mechanic the following Monday on 04/29/2013. The mechanic inspected the vehicle and test-drove it and could not find any problems with the vehicle. He performed a diagnostic computer test and got an error message indicating an air intake problem. He asked me to bring the vehicle the following morning so he can test drive it more and find out more. While driving home, the problem recurred again, this time in the middle of a freeway. It was dangerous. . . Luckily I was in the far right lane, so immediately I coasted to the side, with my hazards lights on and pulled to the side where the vehicle stopped itself. Imagine driving 80mph on a California freeway, and all of a sudden, the vehicle loses power, the engines kick jumps, and without your input, attempts to engage a higher gear but then stalls and immediately shuts down and the brakes and the steering wheel jams. . That is not safety. As I await for the mechanic to address this issue, I am filing this complaint because this is a safety issue. A car that passes a safety inspection test should not be abruptly shutting down in the middle of traffic and render the brake system and steering wheel inoperable.

Driving on community street 25mph heard loud explosion . Car barely ran but got 1 block to an Audi dealer . They inspected car and told me parking brake exploded and gave me lots of metal pieces to show the Volvo mechanic . Called Volvo of north America but they denied ever hearing about this type of problem and Volvo dealer wants to charge me $1700 to replace parking brakes . Talking to other Volvo owners they have had same problem and Volvo refuses to issue a recall . Is there any way your agency can encourage Volvo to do a recall ? thanks.

10 Service Brakes problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

The braking sometimes becomes diminished. The pedal is stiff and normal baking is reduced. It occurs so rarely that there is no way for me to expect that it will present for a mechanic on a test drive. Occurrences are many days or even weeks apart. The symptom involves a distinct variation on the normal braking experience: a slight throbbing occurs and diminished stopping power is available, I have to press markedly harder to get the car to stop. Scary. This symptom is so intermittent and fleeting, it seems it would be near impossible to demonstrate and track down. But every time I experience it, the very slight pulsing during braking and accompanying additional pedal pressure required to achieve a normal stop, I worry. I've even pulled into a parking lot and tried in an abandon section to test it and to get it to reoccur for me, but never can. So I worry. To be clear, the situation for which I'm concerned here is when, on rare occasions, while routine braking, I experience the need to apply more pressure than is otherwise typical and usual. It scares me a bit, but as it turns out, in all the instances so far, it's occurred on city streets w/ relatively low speeds involved and light traffic situations; (e. G. : I'm first to an intersection w/ no one in front of me, etc. ) but for future situations that might require a critical braking, I remain naturally, concerned. The danger is displaced in the immediate term where the remedy has been, simply, applying increased pedal pressure and feeling lucky not to be in a critical braking situation. Then I don't see the problem again for some time. Have you had other mentions of this type of problem with the 1999 V70 glt Volvos?.

11 Service Brakes problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 08/15/2003

Cross country; as vehicle was coming to a stop at about 5 mph, applied brakes, and engine started racing. The consumer kept applying the brakes, but vehicle accelerated, and rear ended another vehicle. The engine remained racing. The vehicle that was rear ended had been pushed into the vehicle in front. The consumer then tried to shift to neutral but ended up in reverse instead. The vehicle spun 180 degrees in reverse, then hit a grove of trees and come to a stop. The brakes were applied the entire time. Damage to the vehicle was unknown at this time.

12 Service Brakes problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

When applying the brakes going downhill they would click. Sometimes when applying the brakes they will grind and not stop. Owner has ran stop signs on 2 different occasions. Dealer has seen vehicle 3 times, and still cant find the problem because it doesn't happen all the time.
