1 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 05/03/2022

In mid summer of 2021, my car overheated randomly without any warning driving down the interstate. I pulled off immediately and cut the car off but, it was already done. The radiator cracked as a result of the engine overheating. I had the car towed to my mechanic and he replaced the radiator. Since then I’ve been having a lot of check engine codes. It’s now may of 2022, my car is still using and going through a lot of coolant. There are no leaks in the coolant. My mechanic recently said that the radiator fan is malfunctioning which is popping the check engine and also probably making the car overheat. I contacted Volvo dealership after seeing the recall on the radiator fan for my year make and model but, they informed me there is no recall on my car via the VIN#. This week I’ve been watching not only the coolant level but also the fans…. My car has two fans on the front, one of which is not cutting on when it should be , the smaller one seems to be working fine. I think the same recall issue is also effecting my car but, Volvo is not helping me.

2 Electrical System problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/20/2020

Througout this cars history (from the first year 20 + years ago through to today) the engine randomly cuts out without warning, though this happens when usally while declerating and braking to round a street corner. Once it cuts out, of course power steering and brakes are virtually inoperative. However, by simply putting in neutral and turning the key the care always immediately restarts.

4 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 11/15/2018

I took my car to the dealer because it was not passing smog and had trouble for several years. So the smog dealer told me to take it to the dealer. I told the dealer that I was trying to pass smog, but the car had been driving very good in spite of the smog problem. They replaced everything that you can imagine at a cost of over 10,000 dollars which both of us spent in a two month period. But after they got it to pass smog I noticed another more serious problem, it would stop running in the middle of traffic. I told them about this new problem and they replaced the key and it still stopped on me 3 x on the freeway and streets. I returned the car going down the main streets for 2 hours and lift it with the company. Mckevitt Volvo in san leandro CA. They wanted to charge me but I told them my are did not have this problem until they worked on it! I need a working car and I am in dept as a result of their work. I am a 65 year old retired teacher but I can't afford this dept. 11.

5 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 04/01/2018

Complete speedometer cluster does not work. No fuel gauge tachometer temperature or speedometer. I've talked to many other people that had that exact same problem. It cuts in and out randomly but that was in the beginning now it does not work at all. Could be a safety issue not knowing how fast you were going or how much fuel you have. I have ran out of gas a few times while moving since I don't know how much is in there. I keep worrying about getting a ticket since I don't know how fast I'm going.

12 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 09/25/2015

Mirror on passenger side fell off mount sept 2015 driving 45 mph on 2 lane road.

13 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 05/12/2015

I was driving at about 35 mph. When I slowed down to make a 90 degree right turn, without warning the engine and power steering went off as I was turning. I had to manually steer the car and luckily did not crash because there was no car in the opposite lane. I pulled over to the side of the road, restarted the car, and received no error message. I took the car to the local Volvo dealer where they could find nothing wrong and deny this is a recall issue.

14 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/16/2014

I was driving at approximately 6:30am, it was still dark, and my dashboard would not display. I was going about 35 miles per hour. I panicked because it tells me all the critical things about the moving vehicle. Then about 2 minutes later it came on. This non-display of the dashboard would intermittently happen when I drove the vehicle over the next month. I could not detect what the problem was. I went online and other Volvo V70 owner had the same problem. It stated that the problem was the dim (drive information module). The problem exists for years 2000 to 2009. So I took the vehicle to my Volvo mechanic. He said it was a common problem. The dim would have to be replaced. I had the mechanic replace the dim because I had no choice. I could not drive without a dashboard. I called Volvo and asked what they were doing about the problem. They said nothing. But they would report it to NHTSA with their next report. I personally think this part should be recalled. I was surprised to hear it was a common problem and for so many years. It could cause major accidents because you don't know your speed, if the vehicle has gas or any other warnings displayed if the vehicle has a problem.

15 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Volvo V70

The approximate failure mileage was 98,000.

17 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 11/29/2013

Srs warning light illuminated at approximately 70,000 miles, 4. 5 years after purchasing Volvo directly from the factory in sweden. The light remained on for a few days, then turned off. This occurred regularly for 4 months until the light remained on indefinitely. When I finally took the vehicle in for servicing, the error code indicated a faulty occupant weight sensor (ows) embedded in the passenger seat. The passenger air bag will no longer deploy in the event of an accident because the sensor will no longer identify a passenger in the car. It is unclear whether this also disables the driver (primary) air bag, as well as the side air bags. I contacted Volvo USA shortly after the 5 year manufacturer warranty expired and they emphatically claimed that this egregious safety issue was no longer their concern. Respectfully, please note that due to this faulty ows the car is extremely dangerous to operate and that Volvo should be responsible for fixing this error.

19 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 11/19/2012

This complaint pertains to the drivers side seat-heater. When activated, on the lowest of 2 settings, the occupant of the drivers-side front seat experiences a burning-pain sensation in the right-rear area of the thigh, after 60-90 seconds of the seat heater being activated via dash button. The owner of the car worries that: 1. ) accidental activation of the drivers-side seat heater, with no occupant in that seat, could result in thermal damage to the leather and padding of the seat, as well as combustion leading to the destruction of the car. 2. ) accidental activation of the seat-heater with an occupant in the drivers-side front seat could result in, sudden and extreme, discomfort to the vehicle operator, resulting in an uncontrollable physical reaction to pain, which could cause the automobile to leave the road, resulting in an accident. 3. ) the value of the car to be decreased upon potential sale of the car, due to the fact that the seat does not heat as intended, and additionally poses a danger to the driver of the vehicle. The fact that this apparatus' failure to operate as intended is in no part due to the owners following of recommended service and maintenance guidelines, would be interpreted as a "defect" by the potential buyer, thus devaluing the car, is worrisome. A fire caused inadvertently, or sudden pain causing a vehicle operator to involuntarily take his/her whole focus off of the task of driving, certainly constitutes a vehicle safety issue. An issue, affecting the immediate vehicles' driver and occupants, as well as other motorists on the road. Volvo submodel: V70 "r".

20 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 11/12/2012

Car stalled in traffic three times. Our mechanic said it that the wires to the fuel pump and its module were rotting, causing electric problems and the stalls in traffic. It now appears Volvo knows about this problem and has issued a technical bulletin to its mechanics as to how to fix it but has not notified the public or issued a recall. This is a potentially dangerous situation since stalls can cause accidents and rotting wires can cause fires.

21 Electrical System problem of the 2002 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/25/2012

Instrument cluster: service airbag warning came on and stayed on, shortly thereafter clock started going backwards rapidly, all gauges went off (came back with a smack to the dash). Found out there was no fault in airbags but the cluster's solder joints had loosened. (Volvo went to lead-free solder around this time) Volvo's fix involves replacing the cluster for $1200 for the part. I got a used one from junkyard and replaced it myself. Now it's two years later and this cluster is starting to exhibit the clock and intermittent outages. Definitely a safety issue as having no gauges is not good plus needlessly worrying about the airbag isn't good. Volvo refuses to recognize this as a problem despite it happening many times according to the number of posts on Volvo forums I have seen relating to the same issue.

22 Electrical System problem of the 2003 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 09/28/2012

Dashboard and speedometer went blank srs warning light on.

23 Electrical System problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

24 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 09/27/2011

Our 2004 Volvo V70 engine cut off while driving on highway 68 in high point. At the time, we were traveling at approximately 45 miles per hour. Luckily there was a side road nearby so we were able to coast, stop, and restart the car safely. Since that day, the check engine light has been coming on and then going off and the engine has shut down while driving on several other occassions. We took the car to crown Volvo in greensboro, nc and they claimed there were not any recalls on our 2004 Volvo V70 and performed a $65 diagonstic service and determined that our fuel pressure sensor had failed and need to be replaced at a cost of over $400. We pulled recall information for our car off motortrend's sited (see below) and forwarded this to the dealership. The dealership called Volvo's customer support team and they said our car was outside the warranty period and had no recall for this issue. We countered that recalls are not warranty claims and fall outside that window. Our car has experienced the same issue listed in recall listed below and the repair and diagnostic test should be honored by Volvo!! recall date Jun 05, 2007 consequences: misfire may occur during driving that, in turn, will reduce the engine torque and in the worst case scenario, the engine may stall without warning. In certain traffic situations this could cause an unsafe situation and possibly a crash. Remedy: dealers will replace the fuel pressure sensor free of charge. The recall began on June 29, 2007. Owners may contact Volvo at 1-800-458-1552.

25 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

27 Electrical System problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

Sometimes, when the car has been traveling for a long time (at least three hours), the entire car will lurch, the rpms will rev, the interior lights will come on, and I will get a "left rear door open" error message. A couple of times this was followed by a complete power-down of the dashboard (lights out, all instruments off) and a warning that my brakes had failed. . Read more...

28 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 05/20/2010

Why aren't you doing anything about Volvo building crap? they should be in jail. Etm - design was unacceptable from a day one. The etm is causing surging, stalling and many other symptoms. Once Volvo started to replace some of them, they used new ones with exactly the same flawed design. Abs module - is known for causing loss of braking power, early brake pads wear and damaging transmission. Front brake calipers - rust on calipers is squeezing rubber boots around sliding pins. Damage to rotors, pads and wheel bearings. Front lights low beams - unacceptable light output. Front seat belts - are cutting into side trim and side trim is cutting into seat belts. Wind shield wipers - highest speed is useless in heavy rain. Cruise control - rpm surges while going 55mph and turning on the cruise control. Do something!.

29 Electrical System problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 05/06/2010

My Volvo V70 has stalled dead repeatedly while driving at both high and low speeds, most recently while just coming onto a long freeway exit ramp with no shoulder. There were cars behind me and I almost got hit from behind. Prior stalls (about 5 of them) include total stalling while braking, and while speeding up. I have had the fuel pump, relay, and manifold replaced. And after all that, spending over $1000, it stalled this last time. Sometimes the car can start up again after a stall and a 10 minute wait, but it will suddenly stall again.

30 Electrical System problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 03/22/2010

Car repeatedly stalls with no explanation. Volvo dealership has worked on car 8 times. Throttle parts have been replaced, etm, and many other parts. Now they say it's the catalytic converter. This is extremely frustrating and scary. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to why the car stalls. Sometimes, it will act as if there's a clogged fuel line, then it stalls the next time I have to decelerate. Other times, it dies when I'm driving.

31 Electrical System problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/22/2009

1999 Volvo V70 awd - electronic throttle system failed at ~96,000 miles. Required $1500 in repairs because the car was just outside of the extended warranty period. Currently negotiating with Volvo about at least partial compensation, as ets failures have been a longstanding problem with this model. No resolution yet.

32 Electrical System problem of the 1999 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

The indicator light on the gear selector has burnt out. There's a 'signal-orange' colored indicator mark that tracks the gear selector against the slate grey color shift assembly put there as a safety feature so you know what gear you're in and don't accidentally take off in an unintended direction, forward or reverse, or roll into someone while unintentionally finding yourself in neutral. Well now at night unless you turn on the interior light, you can just guess what gear you're in because when it's dark in the cab you can't see at all what's what as far a gear selection. I find this remarkable. At age 49, with all the cars we've owned and all ive had until over 100,000 miles, never do I recall any dashboard type indicator lamps burning out, I thought they just made them that way because they're not replaceable or something. I assumed they were like neon or light emitting diodes that can never burn out and would function forever or until something physically broke them. Here's a tip for you folks at the NHTSA and your families: avoid Volvo's in parking lots at night, turns out we have only an idea of the gear we're in before the car starts moving, in the dark the lack of certainty provided by a manufacturing failure could prove dangerous. Volvo for life?.

33 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 01/13/2007

I wanted to bring to your attention an incident regarding a car fire, and resulting total loss of my leased 2006 Volvo V70. I leased the car on January 20, 2006. On Saturday afternoon, January 13, 2007, I was driving with my two young grandsons. We were just starting to head south on the charter oak bridge when I lost power. I was able to coast the car to a stop on the east hartford, CT side of the bridge. One of my grandsons shouted "I see smoke" and sure enough smoke was billowing out from the front end of the car. I told the boys, who were both in the back seat, that we had to get out now. I noticed that the car was rolling backwards and I pulled the emergency brake and the car stopped. We all got out and started walking away from the car, which now had heavy black smoke coming out of it and flames shooting up from the front end. A man stopped and told us to get further away from the car, which we did. 911 was called and in a very short time the connecticut state police and east hartford fire department were on the scene. The car was leased new and it had under 14,000 miles on it. I had no prior problems with it. The only service on the vehicle was the regular scheduled maintenance at 7,500 miles performed at the dealership. The next scheduled maintenance would have been at 15,000 miles. My insurance company advised it was a total loss, and also advised that their "cause and origin specialist" advised them that the fire was caused by a short-out in the power modulator. I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone else, and I just wanted you to be aware of this. We were lucky enough to be able to walk away from that fire but others might not.

34 Electrical System problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 07/14/2006

Vehicle went into 'limp home mode' on highway. Speed went from 65 mph in passing lane to 15 mph. I had to cross 4 lanes of traffic to get to the break down lane. Auto is 2000 Volvo V70 cross country wagon. Ets system was replaced at 66,800 miles when this problem occurred before. The car now exhibits the same behavior at 122,000 miles.

35 Electrical System problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 07/04/2006

While driving our car home from 4th of July vacation on interstate, car shut down by itself and could only do about 7 mph, with a near miss of traffic I was to pull the car over to the shoulder of the road. This same problem has happened 2 additional times until we decided to not drive the car at all due our concern for getting into a accident. The local dealership could not see us for 3 weeks we were told, the car was towed to the dealership and we are still waiting to find out what they will tell us.
