1 Ignition problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 09/23/2012

Pulled into a parking spot on the street, put the car in park, but was unable to turn the key to turn the car off. It took me almost 20 minutes of jiggling the key around and spraying wd40 into the ignition cylinder before being able to very slowly get the key to turn enough to turn the car off. I am not a weak person and was honestly afraid that the amount of pressure I was applying was going to cause the key to break off in the ignition. I immediately took the car to the nearest Volvo dealer (cherry hill, NJ) and since this happened on a Sunday morning, I had to leave the keys with an explanation of the problem on a dropbox form. When I called the service dept today, they told me that they would have to custom order a replacement part from sweden and that it could be a week before my car is repaired. The service person said that this sometimes happens when people attach a large amount of keys to their car key and it causes stress on the ignition cylinder. I have never, ever done that. I always keep my car and house keys separate for safety purposes, so there is no reason this should have happened. After looking for more info on the internet, it appears as though this happens on a fairly regular basis with other owners. I am the original owner of this car and am religious about keeping it in good running order with routine, scheduled maintenance. Failure to be able to shut a car off without any prior warning should certainly be considered a safety issue. Thanks.

The contact owns a 2001 Volvo V70 station wagon. While driving 35 mph a light came on , and the light read reduced performance, and vehicle stalled. However, there was no reduced performance , it was a sudden stall. The vehicle was towed to a dealership on August 31, 2005. The dealer performed diagnostic testing but the problem was not resolved. The vehicle restarted, and as soon as it started, the vehicle stalled again.

7 Ignition problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 01/12/2005

Etm (ets) failure on my 2001 Volvo V70 t5. Sluggish running, not reliable, almost stalling and unsafe. Gave warnings that would clear when the ignition was turned off and then back on. Volvo dealer said throttle body was bad. After replacement at 92303 miles, car ran fine. VIN yv1sw53d611022609.

8 Ignition problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 03/01/2004

The car only starts intermittently. If I try to start it and it simply turns over without starting, I pull the key out, reinsert it, and try again. This one retry often works. However, if it does not, and I repeat this procedure enough times, the car will eventually start. This same thing happened during the first year I owned the car and it was repaired by the dealer under warranty. I was told my "Smart key" lost its intellengence. I was a few days out of warranty when I brought it back to the dealer for the same thing, and was told that the problem could not be recreated, therefore it could not be diagnosed or repaired. I asked them to check my history, and was told that because it could not be recreated, my history didn't matter - that it could be something else entirely.

9 Ignition problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/06/2003

The consumer was having a problem with 2000 Volvo V70 xc losing power and then surging while driving 20-25 mph. The consumer did not make it up a hill . The loss of power even occurred when the car was slowing to stop and turning. This happened twice. Then, it was surging and smoking, and surging with no smoking, the car was wobbly and sluggish. Dealer replaced the following parts; spark plugs, coils, thermostat, and the filters. Other parts have been flushed, this included fuel injectors and ignition. The car has been at the dealer once, a certified Volvo specialist once, and at pep boys once. The consumer had to pay $1300. 00 to figure out what was wrong with the car. The car has had 2 diagnostic tests done. No one knew what was wrong with the car. The engine light came on, and was turned off. The consumer contacted the manufacturer, and they pretended that they did not know anything. The consumer had all the necessary documentation. However, at this point, no one knew what was wrong with the car.

10 Ignition problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 10/29/2000

2 days after I picked up my us spec Volvo; the engine stopped dead while travelling 70 mpg on a major european highway. Volvo could not find the problem and sent me a letter indicating there was nothing wrong with my car. 2 days ago the engine stopped dead again while driving through a busy city intersection. Either of these accidents could have easily been fatal as the car gave no warning before the engine stopped completely leaving me without power brakes or steering and stranded in traffic. The dealer now tells me that Volvo has issued a technical bulletin stating that several new s80 and V70 models have a "weak" fuel pump which causes the engine to stop due to lack of gas although there is plenty of gas in the tank. Despite the publication of this bulletin several weeks ago, neither Volvo nor my dealer notified me that I needed a new pump (despite the previous breakdown), so I and my family were needlessly subjected to another harrowing vehicle failure. This defect is dangerous and Volvo should be forced to correct it on all affected vehicles without waiting for them to have a second unexplained engine stoppage, as the bulletin apparently indicates, before replacing the pump. The dealer that services my car said that they have seen 4 new cars including mine with this problem in the last three months. If this is happening to my new us spec Volvo xc, it must be happening to others as they are all produced in the same factory in sweden. Please do something about this before one of these cars is involved in a serious accident that could have avoided had Volvo been responsible in notifying customers of this potentially fatal defect. I am currently stationed with the us army in heidelberg, germany, and my phone number is +49 173 668 3872 if you need further information or my e-mail is harringtons@hq. Hqusareur. Army. Mil.
