Volvo V70 owners have reported 4 problems related to alternator/generator/regulator (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volvo V70 based on all problems reported for the V70.
Alternator has intermittent charging problems, left stranded with dead battery. When I spoke with Volvo the service manager said that it is not uncommon problem. I took the car to a service station and they had seen the problem on multiple Volvos as well.

We are having problems with our vehicle as identified in a newspaper article with our Volvo. The dealer we purchased the vehicle from originally refused to correct the problem of the loss of power, stalling and other defects with my vehicle under warranty (they claims to have been advised by Volvo that they could not fix the problem without a "reduced performance" light coming on) until I told them that if I was killed (the last time this happened, I lost power as I was entering I-95 north during rush hour and was nearly broadsided by a construction vehicle merging from the opposite direction) it would cost them a lot more than simply a repair. After threatening a lawsuit, they agreed to download some software to correct the problem. While the issue is not as prevalent as it was, we still have occasions when we get power surges, lose power and the electrical systems do not work properly in the vehicle. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle. The transmission/air flow problem is just one of many issues we have had with this vehicle - many of them safety related. We were told by the dealer that they were aware of the problem through a notice they received from Volvo - a notice was the kind that notified the dealers of the problem were not required to advise customers unless customers complained (this was the same issue with an internal engine fan which apparently can catch fire without warning - the dealers got notice about that, but the customers did not - if we complained about issues with the fan, depending on the kind of fan it was, it would be fixed under warranty - otherwise, we would be responsible for replacing the fan at the cost of over $500 - our fan, after we complained that it came on for no reason while the vehicle was parked, was finally replaced last summer by the dealer but they had to get "special permission" from Volvo to do it. Apparently, these fans can come on and cause the engine to overheat, and there have been fires because of it.
While driving 55 mph vehicle stalled. Driver was able to restart the vehicle, and took to the dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that the alternator needed to be replaced.

I would like to add my name to the number of people complaining about their Volvo's engine stalling repeatedly without warning. I believe this might be from the unit that regulates the amount of air into the vehicles engine. I purchased my 2000 Volvo V70xc from santa monica Volvo in October 2001 and it is still under warranty. Over the last year and a half my engine has stalled over 20 times while driving without any warning. Several times this occurred while I was driving 65 miles an hour on a freeway that almost resulted in serious car accidents. Sometimes I can restart the car immediately, other times the car has to sit for a while, but four times I had to have the car towed. The first time the engine died on July 5, 2004 I had the car towed to a Volvo repair shop in valencia, California. The next morning the repair shop called and told me the car started for them without any problems. So I drove to santa monica Volvo on July 7, 2004 and their service department replaced the battery. Two months later (September 1, 2004) when the cars engine died again while I was driving, the car was towed to santa monica Volvo and the service department told me that nothing was wrong with my car. I told the service department that I did not want the car back until they found what was wrong with it. The service representative then spoke to a manager and called me back to say that my alternator was putting out low voltage and they replaced it. Then on June 30th my Volvo lost all power again while I was driving and wouldn't start. The car was towed back to santa monica Volvo where I was told they needed to do a throttle body cleaning and then replace the mass air flow meter for a total of $708. I bought my Volvo for safety reasons and I have never felt more unsafe driving a car. I sincerely hope that your investigation leads to a recall of my Volvo. It is the biggest lemon that I have ever owned!.
