On 2/3/06 our Volvo V70 year 2000, 74000m showed an ets light and check engine light. Car stalled at upon stopping and also upon stopping at a stop light the vehicle would not accelerate. Upon turning the car off and back on I was able to have it accelerate. The car would run ok for about 20 miles then lights came on again. Contacted Volvo byers in cols OH 614-864-0780 whom informed me that the throttle system is needing replaced. Had the vehicle serviced on 2/6/06. Byers perform fault tests and noted that there was low voltage and stated cables from battery were needing replaced. I informed them that I was confused with how this could cause the ets light and check engine light to come on and cause my car to stall and at times not accelerate while the car is running. They indicated that prior to fixing the ets they needed to fix this issue. The cost $463. 59. They then cleared all fault codes and noted that there was no ets code present. I informed them that this is probably because they did not drive the car enough after it had been turned off as this is what occurred to me the day the ets caused problems. They insisted that it was repaired. However, on February 15, 2006 the ets and check engine light came on again and the car stalled upon stopping and the lights would turn off upon restarting then driving 10 miles turned back on. I called the dealer complaining about the issue and failure to remedy the initial cause of the problem. I addressed my frustration that I spent over $450 to fix a problem that may never have had to be fixed. Researched other problems with Volvo ets and found similar issues and experiences with this module. Furthermore, I learn of a warranty extension but never received any documentation of any potential problem with the vehicle. This is a safety hazard. Had I been stopped in an intersection/railroad track I would not have been able to accelerate the car to avoid potential injury. Very frustrated with Volvo in ohio.

(1) vehicle is 2001 Volvo V70 xc cross country. This vehicle uses an electronic throttle module (etm) manufactured for Volvo by magneti marelli. The etm replaces a traditional throttle cable and controls engine speed when pushing on the gas pedal. (2) on July 9, 2005, the electronic throttle module in my 2001 Volvo failed as I was entering a highway from a complete stop at an intersecting street. Traffic on this highway operates at or above the posted speed limit of 55 mph. I was accelerating at or near wide open throttle when the etm failed. The failure resulted in the etm going into "limp home mode," which caused the throttle to only operate around idle speed (approximately 800 rpm), and not allowing me to continue to accelerate to avoid being hit by approaching traffic. Moving forward at idle speed, I was able to maneuver the car between approaching vehicles and coasted onto a grass barrier separating an entrance ramp from the main lanes of traffic. The car then stalled. The car's computer readout on the dashboard displayed "reduced engine performance" and then "engine system failure. " this failure occurred without warning, and I was fortunate to not have been involved in a rear end collision. (3) don beyer Volvo in falls church, va informed me that the etm had failed after only 49,000 miles. It is my understanding that Volvo cars is well aware of this defect and is currently the subject of various investigations and lawsuits surrounding this issue. Volvo has reported to the California clean air resources board that up to 94% of etms will fail before the vehicle reaches 100,000 miles. There is no regular maintenance to be performed on the etm. Volvo technicians cannot determine when an etm is about to fail. Drivers simply have to wait to be unexpectedly stranded. The replacement part is identical or nearly identical to the original etm, making another unexpected and premature failure very likely.

The Volvo began to sporadically lose power and stall. I called the Volvo dealer and made an appointment after it stalled while cornering and my wife had almost lost control of the vehicle. On 9/23/04 the vehicle was towed to Volvo. They checked for codes, battery cables, fuel and ignition and battery and found nothing wrong. They replaced a relay. Total cost was $173. 15. The problem was still present and I had the vehicle towed back in on 11/16/04. They then diagnosed the problem as a faulty throttle unit. They replaced it and performed a software reload. The cost of that service was $ 1077. 14. The vehicle has not stalled since.

The consumer was having problems with Volvo 2001 v-70 cross country wagon. The vehicle was stalling at random speeds starting in mid-August of 2004. Consumer took the vehicle to a repair shop, and the mechanic suspected the throttle was the issue. The problem was random and it would not do this for several days. The vehicle stalled on the highway while the consumer was merging into traffic. The vehicle would start after consumer let the car sit for a few minutes. Later that day the car stalled again. Consumer had to have the car towed to a dealership for repairs. This time the car did not start. The dealer replaced the throttle module, loaded software; throttle body, cable tie and etm reloaded. The car was running okay at times, but the engine was racing very high for seconds and then returns back to the normal rate. The motorwas revving and the tachometer was registering high for a moment. Consumer considered returning the vehicle because of the problems. The total cost on repairs has been over $800. 00. Nhtsa investigation, pe05041.
While operating the subject vehicle, a Volvo 1999 model V70r awd, and attempting a left hand turn through traffic under a green light, the throttle control system failed. As the oncoming traffic cleared sufficiently for a safe left hand turn, the accelerator pedal was depressed to execute the left turn but the engine and vehicle did not respond. The vehicle only idled forward into approaching traffic. The vehicle had to be turned off and restarted in order to get the throttle to respond. In my opinion, this failure is equivalent to the throttle cable snapping on a four year old vehicle with only 60,000 miles. If the rate of incidence of occurrence is somehow represented by the number of complaints evident on the world wide web, then this is a common occurrence. It is likely that property and people have been hurt by this throttle failure and this problem should be corrected by a recall.
