1 Loud Engine Noise problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 10/14/2012

Sunday morning (10. 14. 12) car making a horrible noise from engine block. Sounds like loose bolts rattling around inside engine block. Checked trusted Volvo forums on web. I have had four Volvos between myself and my wife: 2000 s40 (wife), 2001 s80 and now 2005 s40 (wife) and my Xc90 - used these forums to stay up on latest issues/maintenance. There were several posts with identical issue with this model, year and v8 engine. Apparently, ongoing issue with counter balance shaft bearing. Design flaw allows rust to occur at bearing and then then cb-shaft fails. Will cause incredible damage to engine - maybe even death if occurs at high speeds. Called dealer this morning, they are familiar with issue, wanted me to drive in or tow. Cost is prohibitive and based on legions of similar consumer reports, am already certain of diagnosis. . The contact owns a 2005 Volvo Xc90. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact heard a loud noise emitting from the front end of the vehicle. Immediately there was a slight loss of engine power during acceleration. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

3 Loud Engine Noise problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/08/2011

1. July 8, 2011. 2005 Volvo Xc90 balance shaft broke off within car engine. Heard a loud sound coming from car engine, and lost a great deal of power while driving on highway. 2. Further damage to the vehicle engine could have been done due to accelerating to get of the highway in order to avoid a collision from vehicles coming from behind. This was a scary life and dangerous experience. 3. Volvo having explained what created the problem to date. The engine will have to be pulled out and almost re-built at a cost to almost $8500. 00 extended warranty I paid $4,100 for is not covering full cost. I am responsible for over $2000 + cost of car rentals to date. July 28, 2011, car is still with Volvo.

4 Loud Engine Noise problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 09/24/2010

A rubbing noise began in late September. I had an inspection and diagnostic at the dealership on September 23rd. They told me the front bearings and the lower engine mount pad should be replaced. The next day, while I was driving, the transmission seized. The car was towed and the dealership said they had to replace the transmission and entire coolant system. Their diagnostic specialist was unable to detect such a catastrophic failure the day before it happened. Who knows what would have happened if I was on the highway. Volvo acknowledged the problem but only paid for half of the parts and labor. I still had to come out of pocket $3000+.
