*with the bowers & wilkins sound system* twice within 1400 miles, there was a loud "pop" sound from the speakers followed by no sound from any portion of the vehicle. The pop sounded like a window or the sunroof shattered. All sound was lost: sensus feedback, turn signals, parking sensors, phone, etc. The only thing that worked was the bass. After the car was parked and off, and re-started, everything worked as normal. Oddly, there was the feeling of static electricity just prior to each pop. These pops were caught on dash cam for proof. There was static heard in the dash cam video too. The dealer provided a "fix" with a software update described in technical journal. Tj 35554. 20-2020 (ihu volume restrction with orange key). This software update had nothing to do with the problem I had. The orange key was no where near the car during any occurrence. Since the update, there have been several identical loud pops, but the audio continued working. The same static electricity feeling occurred milliseconds before the pop. All incidents occurred while on a freeway or merging on a freeway, with my phone on the wireless charger and the audio on at least around 50%. Multiple reports of the same issue on a reputable Volvo forum.

The lcd instrument panel randomly goes blank. This happens while driving at various speeds. So, no speedometer, turn signals, gas gauge etc. Can be seen. Volvo claims a software update should fix the issue but it has not. It has been ongoing for almost one year.

I purchased my 2018 Volvo Xc90 t6 awd (hereinafter, the 2018 Xc90 or the vehicle) in October 2017, through lease agreement. Shortly thereafter, I noticed that the fuel efficiency of the vehicle was well below the epa rating and warranted range, based on representations by the dealer at, and prior to, the time of sale. I took the vehicle to the dealer's service department, so the issue could be investigated further. The dealer reported there was a software update that addressed the problem, and that it would no longer be an issue. Subsequently, the issue continued to re-appear and the fuel efficiently continued to suffer. I again, on numerous occasions (between 5 or 6) between December 2017 and November 2018, took the vehicle to the dealer's service department. In each occurrence, except the final one prior to this complaint being filed, it was again reported that no issue existed or had been remedied with a software fix. Furthermore, in (or around) July of this year, the compressor (or another component controlling the hvac system in the 2018 Xc90) failed, whilst driving to houston, texas. The heat inside the vehicle quickly raised. This part was replaced in houston. In October 2018, I again, finally, took the 2018 Xc90 to the service department because (1) the check engine light came on; and (2) the electronic safety systems, such as the auto braking, had automatically engaged without any cars around the vehicle. The vehicle was also driving and handling in a strange manner. Fuel efficiency was again a concern. The service department had the vehicle for approx. Two-and-a-half weeks. They, ultimately, determined the fuel parts, were defective. They replaced these parts and noted it would be responsible for all prior fuel issues. However, they also stated a recall was issued, but my vehicle was not on the list. No recall notice exists with the NHTSA.

We were travelling on the freeway when all the displays went blank. The entertainment, gauges, etc. On the freeway! I was afraid the engine would shutoff on us. Immediately I called the Volvo on call and explain the situation to the operator and all he could do was apologize and offer a tow truck, if needed. Once the system came back on, the hi-beam and the child door locks were activated! the rear passengers had a difficult time opening the door because we did not know what happened. In my opinion, this is a very serious issue because the entire car is controlled by a software and there is no manual bypass or backup system to ensure the safety of the occupants. We've had this car for about a year and have taken it in for software issues, including, but not limited blind spot monitoring failure, front collision sensor failure, navigation system failure, all sensors failure, warning lights/signals failure, backup camera failure and panoramic sunroof failure. Each time we've taken it in, they always told us it was a software updates. Really? software updates for each and every time??.
(car is 26 days old) the dashboard screen went black while driving on the highway & the engine turned off & wouldn't go over (about) 10 mph. I was able to come to a rolling stop in a parking lot, and called Volvo because I thought maybe I was out of gas, due to the screen not working. My Volvo app let me know I still had a 1/4 of a tank, but I just wanted to make sure. They brought me gas & it was not a problem with gas, the problem was definitely electrical/ motor issues. We finally got the car towed to Volvo of las vegas & they told me it was just a software upgrade needed. I feel that this is a major safety problem & does not seem like a simple software upgrade to me. I was lucky enough to not have my new baby in the vehicle when this happened, but I am a new mom & this makes me very nervous.
2016 Xc90, engine is decelerating on street road going from 40-45 miles per hour, to 10 miles per hour suddenly and quickly. With closure of back door where there is no lock button to hit by accident, car is locking all doors by itself when closing the passenger door. I am aware of babies being locked in the cars due to this fault in system and my pet was locked in due to the locks locking on their own when I closed passenger door which does not have a lock button I could have hit by accident. Front end crash going off and slightly braking on highway and on city streets when it should not, nothing in front of car numerous times and is not going off when it should for instance someone cutting car off within 2 feet several times. Dashboard screen goes blank while driving meaning you can not see speed, etc. . Literally every function on car randomly does not work. Battery/alternator is not recharging/maintaining charge long enough to keep auto start/stop engine feature working, which means 3. 5 miles more per gallon for me with my extremely careful, not riding gas pedal into lights. Some say foot detection module is draining rear battery. It has been worked on 7 times with less than 5,000 miles. Others online have described same issues. I have invoices of taking into dealer each time. I have never reported any faulty product but am very concerned for safety features will randomly and actually do not work while driving. You ask when started- vehicle purchased in April 2016 and has been from the beginning with no remedies. I have gotten extremely low battery signals and warnings that my car will shut down in a few minutes. They seem to have taken away that warning in the latest software update because my car has less charge at times then when I originally received the warning. In other words, I no longer get the warning even when my battery is very low.
09/24/2016 when starting car noted driver display blank. Car speed reduced to 5-10 mph. Unable to accelerate on city streets, had to pull-over and await tow to dealership. Initially delaer thought to be software issue but has been unable to definitively identify issue. Volvo engineer en route. As of 09/28 no solution.
The contact owns a 2016 Volvo Xc90. While driving approximately 4 mph, the entire instrument panel and odometer gauge failed to function and the vehicle did not accelerate over 10 mph. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the computer software was updated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.
Electrical failure, suspension failure, leakage to air bag sensor, software problems.
Tl- the contact owns 2016 Volvo Xc90. The VIN was not provided. The contact stated that while driving at 45 mph the vehicle decelerated, dropping down 5 mph and picked up speed again, without warning. The contact stated that the vehicle was equipped with autonomous braking system. The vehicle was towed to the midwestern auto group dealer (614-889-2571, located at 6335 perimeter loop rd, dublin, OH 43017) where the software was update. The failure recurred at 75 mph without warning. The contact called the byers Volvo dealer (614-864-0780, located at 301 n. Hamilton road, columbus, OH 43213) and scheduled an appointment for software update. The contact stated that her husband made the manufacturer aware of the failure and was referred to the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 220. Fe.
Car was having issues with speedometer screen and center console screens. Screen would blank out when navigation system was in use and vehicle was moving. This would happen twice and system would normalize. Several weeks ago this happened and my husband and I smelled a weird odor and then smoke began bellowing out center console. Unit was turned off and dealer contacted. Vehicle was brought in but after three weeks still has issues. Went to pick up car on 12/5 only to find vehicle was having issue with retaining a fully charged battery. We were told al of these issues are due to software updates but to have speedometer go out while in use and to smoke is not safe.
The contact owns a 2012 Volvo Xc90. The contact stated that the rear back up camera and gps system worked intermittently. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer approximately six times where the technician diagnosed that the vehicle needed a software update and the multimedia module and camera needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer informed the contact that due to the software company going out of business, they would no longer try to repair the vehicle. The failure mileage was 44,013.

The battery in the vehicle fails due to a drain in the power systems because of a failure in software systems ,this fault is known to Volvo and they refuse to repair . If the car is not driven every day the electronic systems search for blue tooth phone signals and satalite radio signals causing a drain on the electrical systems enoughn to kill the battery on a dailey basis. Volvo says they have a repair for this and say that I must pay. This is a known defect to Volvo they should repair this.

While driving, the electronic panel all shut down and I got msg regarding brake failure and to stop safely. I was on left-most lane of highway and my signals and hazard lights would not turn on!!! even my power window would not work so I couldn't open for me to make hand-signals. Lucky my father-in-law next to me had window open so I told him to make motions to surrounding cars for me to change lanes safely. When I was able to stop, I turned off car, turned on again and got srs airbag urgent msg on panel. Since car started ok but with msg, I took side streets home but it shut off again 2 times. I did same thing (stop/restarted) and made it home. I had my in-laws with me and my 3 young kids when it first happened on 12/23/11. Because of holidays/vacation and since nearest dealer is 20 miles away (an hour drive with traffic) and service department only open on weekdays, we couldn't take to dealer right away. Since it was an airbag message, my husband not too concerned - he wasn't with me when it first happened so I don't think he realized the gravity. He used it few times and 2 wks later, it happened to him. This time when restarted, there was also check engine msg and noticed difficulty steering. He took to dealer, and both technician and manager could not diagnose problem! they just reset to remove the srs msg and did a software update. We thought/hoped it was fixed but then yesterday the same thing happened (all shut down)! last night we started checking on-line and found many similar complaints! we are devastated because we love/take care of this car, which we use primarily on weekends and trips. We thought it's safe for our family but now aren't comfortable that taking back to dealer will fix problem. I am very surprised there has been no recall. Something needs to be done because it's only a matter of time before there are fatalities.

While driving the electronics shut off and the engine dies as if its in neutral. Took to Volvo service and they said a can software upgrade would solve it, this did not solve it, immediately after we left the same thing happened within a few miles, engine shut down, power went out, when restarted the srs airbag error code came on as well as the abs break failure message. I see you guys have completed an investigation (pe10025) on this but what the heck is being done about it. This car is very dangerous to my wife and newborn!!!! the car goes from 70 to 10mph on the freeway, how is this not as important as the issue with toyotas excessive acceleration problem, does someone need to die before you guys take this serious!.
Brakes lights always on. Took car to dealer and they advised that water had leaked into cem module and main wireharness and required replacemnet at a cost of $7000. Known issue to Volvo with service bulletin sent to dealers. Found independent Volvo repair shop willing to replace module only (software download from dealer) and clean build-up on harness connectors. Requiring removal of part of dash, driver seat. Took 4 days at repair shop. Repair completed for under $2000.

The contact owns a 2004 Volvo Xc90. The contact stated while driving 50 mph the vehicle loses all electrical components. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer and the dealer performed a software upgrade as well as an upgrade to the central electronic module. None of the upgrades remedied the issue with electrical components. The dealer stated that the vehicle may need a new wiring harness installed. The failure mileage was 110,000.
During long durations(>4hrs) of driving my 2004 Volvo Xc90, it seems to have electrical problems that have caused me and the passengers to be put into dangerous situations. For example, driving on a long trip with the cruise control enabled and trying to accelerate up a hill and suddenly the car will go into an engine protection mode and reduce power to the extent that I can't accelerate and have to pull over on the side of the road--(boost control module has been replaced and the engine control module has been replaced. ) as long as I don't use the cruise control this will not occur. Also, there was a software update in 2009. Next, after trying to accelerate up a hill, there seems to be intermittent reduction in engine power, not allowing the car to accelerate. After trying to accelerate the "check engine" light has appeared and will not go off (waiting to have this problem diagnosed). . .
Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Volvo Xc90. The contact stated when driving the vehicle for more than an hour, the vehicle develops electrical problems. The contact stated the instrument panel will go out. When the contact turns the vehicle of and back on, they get various warning lights illuminate on the dashboard. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told the needed a software upgrade. The contact stated the upgrade temporarily corrected the problem, but the failure reoccurred when the weather got warmer. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 91,000. Rl.
I was wondering if there has been a recall for 2004 xc-90's because of there extremely dangerous electrical failure. This past weekend after about 3 hours of highway driving the whole dashboard and navigation flickered and restarted. It did they 3 or 4 times until it did a similar thing where the entire dashboard and navigation shut down. The abs light came on and it told me there was break failure and to pull over slowly. I had no blinkers or hazard lights and the headlights even went off. This is extremely hazardous. I pulled over and turned the car off. Turning it back on it drove ok for a few minutes until it flickered again. I finally made it to my destination and took it to a Volvo dealership who could not figure it out. They charged $160 to try and "figure it out" but they just ended up upgrading the software. On my trip back down to nyc, the same thing began happening after about 3 hours of driving. It flickered a few times and again went completely dark telling me to pull over on the freeway. After pulling over the airbag message comes on. I have read various places online of this happening to other people so this is not a rare condition. This seems like a very dangerous situation which Volvo should really take care of. Asking customers to pay $1200 to replace a cem when it really should be a recall is a little ridiculous.
The contact owns a 2004 Volvo Xc90. While driving on the highway in rainy conditions, the electrical system shut down for a few seconds. The lights, radio, windshield wipers, and steering also shut off. The failure continued to occur intermittently within minutes until the vehicle was completely turned off and restarted. He only noticed the failure while he was driving on the highway. The dealer made several attempts to diagnose the failure and was unable to find the cause. It was suggested that he replace the computer and software system. He replaced the software (upgrade) but the failure continued to occur. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The current mileage was approximately 106,000. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000. Updated 01/06/10 updated 01/07/10.
On June 15, 2007, while on a highway traveling 65 mph, my 2004 Volvo Xc90 made a jerk, as if it had suddenly fallen out of gear. About 5 minutes later, the same thing happened. It felt as if something locked the tires for an instant, then let go. About another 5 minutes later, we received an error message that said "brake failure, stop safely". Moments later, we lost all control of the car - total electronic shutdown. No lights, no hazards, no power steering, no brakes. My husband was able to glide to the breakdown lane, and we rolled until the car stopped. We had our two young children in the car, on the side of the highway, in the dark. It was a terrifying predicament, and we couldn't leave the car due to the danger of not being seen. We had the car towed, and a few days later, the Volvo dealer said it was a $60 software upgrade that needed to be done. After the car was returned to us, we took it to another Volvo dealer and had them perform a 45k check-up, had them reevaluate the situation, and also had a va state inspection done, and they told us everything was fine. Just barely 3 months later, in exactly the same scenario, the same exact thing happened. On 9/21/07, we were on a highway at night, and once again felt the car jerking, followed a few minutes later by total electronic failure. No lights, no hazards, nothing. Once again, we managed to get off the highway safely, but I fear the next time this happens, we may not get so lucky. All 3 dealers that have looked at this car have never heard of this problem before, which is very unsettling, as I can never be convinced it is fixed. I am terrified to ever drive my car again, even if they do "fix it". The car is currently still being evaluated, so we do not know the latest prognosis for it.
Unsafe front suspension repaired 4 times by Volvo involving district factory technical supervisor and technicians on 3 of four occasions and the vehicle still has serious safety and handling concerns - no one in the family will drive the car. It has also had serious performance related safety issues regarding vehicle electronics virtually shutting the vehicle down in the middle of an interstate. Anti skid problems on multiple occasions. Drivers seat belt anchor was improperly attached and would not have held in an accident. The steering wheel came dangerously loose while driving and the dealership stated that it had never been properly affixed. (I have owned 300 cars in my life and never has a steering wheel come loose)! tires were abnormally badly and quickly due to significant suspension problems and were not warranty by the manufacture. . Electrical problems caused several fuses to blow in the dark effectively turning all rear marker and tail lights off. It was necessary to drive with the hazard lights on to avoid being hit by another driver.
My 2004 Xc90 awd began experiencing odd electrical problems this spring at about 45000 miles. While driving at cruising speed, the vehicle would suddenly and without warning experience a hard jerk followed by activation of the windshield wipers and loss of power to the radio. First time, the dealer could not replicate the problem but downloaded electrical software updates. Same thing second time and back to dealer, again could not replicate, and they downloaded transmission updates focusing more on the jerking issue. Third time it happened, I continued to drive the car to the dealer so they could see what I was experiencing. On the way there, I had complete loss of electrical power: no power to speedometer, to gas gauge, to windows, to air conditioning, radio, etc. Also had less than full power to drive with. The dealer again downloaded electrical software updates and gave me the vehicle back. Same problem for 4th time this Friday and they tell me they have put new computer into car. Fortunately there have not been any deaths or crashes, but this defect causes a serious safety problem without any warning.
