36 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 12/22/2008

The contact owns a 2002 Acura Mdx. The contact noticed that whenever the speed reached between 20-35 mph, the gears would stick. In addition, the check engine indicator began illuminating on the instrument panel. The dealer stated that the transmission was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Immediately following the repair, the gears became even more difficult to shift than before the repair was performed. The vehicle was driven back to the dealer, but they could not duplicate the failure. The following day, while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle began smoking from the rear and all of the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle stalled and was towed to the nearest Acura dealer. The contact was informed that the intermediate bracket failed, which caused the transmission to fail. The vehicle has not been repaired. The manufacturer stated that they would issue a new transmission, but were not liable for the repairs for the intermediate bracket. The current mileage was 61,900 and failure mileage was 61,000.

37 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 11/07/2008

Vehicle abruptly downshifted almost throwing driver through windshield traveling at approx 30 mph. Immediately brought to dealer where the downshifting occurred 3-4 more times on the 6 mile drive to dealer. Determined by dealer to be transmission failure. All servicing for transmission was done in a timely manner including 2004 recall service where jet kit was installed. Dealer covering all costs of replacement except $500 out of pocket expenses and providing a 3yr/36,000 mile warranty on repair. Had this failure occurred on a busy highway a severe accident would have been highly likely.

43 Transmission Failure problem of the 2003 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 07/11/2007

I have a 2003 Acura Mdx, with ~115,00 miles on it. Over the last year I have periodically experienced significant vibration during shifting of gears. In my investigation into the matter,I have found these symptoms are identical to those experienced by other Mdx owners and is consistent with the many complaints of failed transmissions with the Mdx model. I have taken the car to the dealer , frankel Acura in cockeysville, maryland, for service on this issue on two separate occasions, but they have consistently denied that there is any problem with the transmission. However, they have offered two repairs that they said would address the problem . Replaced engine mounts and flushed/refilled transmission fluid for a total cost of ~$800. Their continued denial of problem with the transmission conflicts not only with my complaints, and those of many other owners, but the conclusions of two independent mechanics I had evaluate the transmission on my Mdx. One of these mechanics is a transmission specialist and the other has over thirty years experience in auto repair. They both came to the same conclusion that the transmission is failing ,and one even spoke to the service and parts manager at frankel Acura about my case. However, frankel Acura was still denying any possible problem with the transmission. If one investigates this type of complaint on the internet, they will readily find dozens if not hundreds of similar cases, and a very consistent pattern of denial on the part of the Acura dealership network. There is no doubt in my mind that this issue warrants a product recall, just like the one issued for the 2001 and 2002 Mdx models.

44 Transmission Failure problem of the 2003 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 04/17/2007

Transmission failure on Acura Mdx - which is well known for Acuras - and their unwillingness to live up to their liability. This is an extreme safety issue!!!!!.

45 Transmission Failure problem of the 2003 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 03/02/2007

The transmission has gone out in Mdx Acura SUV, 2003. I have passed my warranty by 6,000 miles. The dealer could not tell me why the transmission failed. They just said the transmission was completely totaled , and they did not know why or what happened. The car was in good shape.

47 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 05/31/2006

Transmission failure at 64,600 miles.

48 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 05/18/2006

2001 Mdx transmission failed and was replaced with rebuilt transmission by dealer. This was after 4 visits over 9 months complaining about a shudder between 40 - 45 mph. Another repair shop (non-dealer) had diagnosed a faulty transmission on the first visit. Transmission fluid was burnt. Dealer refused to accept that diagnosis and replaced egr valve (had already been replaced once), 4th gear pressure switch, and one time claimed not to be able to reproduce the problem. Dealer denied knowledge of any history of transmission failures in this model, despite many documented cases which I discovered after the transmission failed. In retrospect, the car was obviously dangerous to drive the entire period from the first occurrence till the replacement. Acura cs has refused any sort of good will reimbursement, partial or otherwise, due to the fact that all service was not exclusively done at a dealer. Honda/Acura is stone walling the public about these transmission problems, and a dangerous and defective product remains on the market for each consumer to discover for him/herself. It is only good luck that none of my family was killed or injured, and it is just a matter of time before some unsuspecting person is. Please investigate and force Honda/Acura to do the right thing and recall these transmissions and replace them at their cost.

49 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 04/06/2006

Transmission failure. The automatic transmission failed without warning at 87,000 miles.

50 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 03/21/2006

2001 Acura Mdx transmission failure. Driving on the freeway at 60 mph the car almost stalled before getting in proper gear (automatic transmission??). No accident. But looking at several wed sites on the topic, I realized that I was not the only one in the same situation. I would consider that the transmission should not be a safety hazard after only 67k miles on the car. What are you waiting for to take action? a death?.

51 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 03/17/2006

I purchased a '01 Acura Mdx as a pre-owned vehicle on October 23, 2003. The car ran great except for the occasional recall. The first recall was done at 35,000 miles for the front springs and then at 39,000 miles for the transmission overheating issue. On March 17,2006 I was traveling down the highway when I completely lost all power to my vehicle and have to swerve off the road to avoid getting hit. I was quite scared. After pulling off to the side of the road I got out of my vehicle to see if there was anything wrong externally and there wasn't, but I noticed that the check engine light had come on. I immediately brought it into my dealer and had then check the car over. They stated that the check engine light indicated a total transmission failure. They told me that this type of thing was common in these cars and that the recall was supposed to fix the issue. Apparently it hasn't. At 77,000 miles my transmission failed and Acura wants nothing to do with it. Their headquarters have stated that the two problems, the recall and my transmission issue are unrelated. After doing a consider amount of research on the internet I've noticed these cars are known for transmission issues and that a total transmission failure can result because the recall was not done properly or because the recall didn't catch the problem in early enough. My problem is that the car was driven 40,000 miles before the recall was done and during that time some damage had to have been done to the transmission to warrant this transmission. My question to you is, where do I go from here?? Acura wants nothing to do with the car because they know it is a major safety defect in there vehicles. In the least they could have provided me with a rebuilt transmission, but they denied even that request. They should be stopped!!.

52 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 03/03/2006

Driving at approx. 40 mpg. During acceleration the car did not respond and then lurched forward. The second time the car did not respond during acceleration going up a hill and I started to lose momentum. Engine light finally came on after approx 10 seconds. I was stuck on the road without being able to move the vehicle off the road. Dealer concluded that it was transmission failure. No help in subsidizing fix as vehicle was out of warranty.

53 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 02/13/2006

2002 Acura Mdx automatic transmission failure occurred at 77k miles. Symptoms included up-shift hesitation between 2-3 drive gears, hard and jerky transmission changes in both drive and reverse. The symptoms started to get progressively worse and more frequent. I took this Mdx to a local aaa-approved, independent auto repair shop for a diagnosis. The shop's repair technician and a transmissions specialist test drove the Mdx and experienced the same type of symptoms. They returned and reported that the transmission was indeed failing. I had the Mdx towed to the Acura dealership where the vehicle was purchased. The dealership's service department confirmed that the transmission was failing and it had to be replaced completely. The transmission was replaced with a rebuilt unit by the Acura service department. A historical note: back in the fall of 2004, I received notice of a Mdx transmission recall from Acura. Shortly upon receiving this notice I did take this Mdx to an Acura dealership service department and had the transmission recall service done.

54 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 06/26/2005

My wife was driving our 2002 Acura Mdx about 35-40 mph when the car locked up like the brakes were slammed on. Car was immobile and could not be pushed off the roadway until the arrival of a tow truck. Dealer now has the car and says it was transmission failure. Symtoms are the same as discribed as failures in a recall of this vehicle. Recall work was done about 5000 miles ago in which an oiling device was installed to correct the problem. Failure occured anyway after the correction. My contention is that the required inspection of the gears was not performed correctly and the "fix" was performed instead. The dealer says I may be liable for 4500 dollars to replace the defective transmission because it has 101000 miles on it and they only warrenty it to 100000. If the problem was recognized at 96000 when the recall work was done, I wouldn't be in this predicament- thanks.

55 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 04/20/2005

Premature transmission failure on 2001 Acura Mdx.

56 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 04/15/2005

I had just picked up our Acura Mdx that morning after getting a maintenance check-up completed. Later that day after picking up my son the check engine light turned on and for some reason the light that illuminates around the gear the car is driving in was blinking. It seemed like the car was going haywire. After all that, the car suddenly starts to surge and is having a difficult time accelerating. I called the dealership and was told to bring it over immediatly. Each time the car was at a stop the car would not accelerate properly even if I had pushed down on the gas pedal all the way. The car barely made it half way up the drive way and I ended up just leaving it right there. The Mdx has cut-off while driving about 5-8 mph, about 4-5 times now. The Mdx has had a history of stalling and all indicator lights turning on while driving. Before the transmission failed, the Mdx has had the egr valve replaced due to another stall after the engine was running for sometime already. The Mdx did have a jet kit installed at 76,847 miles, but after 16,248 miles the transmission failed and replaced and I got billed for it. I believe that the transmission should have been replaced in addition to the jet kit and should be covered by Acura since they put out a defective transmission.

57 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 02/25/2005

'recall campaign' issued for 2001 Acura Mdx transmission failure. The dealer informed the consumer his vehicle did not exhibit the heat discoloration of the second gear when it was inspected on August 23, 2004, so the dealer installed the a/t oil jet kit instead of replacing the transmission. On Feb 25, 2005 8,000 miles after the oil jet kit was installed, the transmission failed while the consumer was driving. The specific component of the transmission which was affected by the safety recall was the component that failed. Recall #04v176000.

58 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Acura MDX

Failure Date: 07/17/2004

I have a '01 Acura Mdx which I purchased used. I have had several warranty issues with this vehicle since then. Because I purchased it used (it was imported from canada which I did not know and I also did not know it voided any warranties that Acura had on it) Acura refused my plea to honor the transmission recall on this vehicle. I was on a Acura forum and read where one Acura customer transmission failed because of this recall. I have tried numerous times and have talked to numerous Acura employees. They all told me to take a "hike". Can you help. . I believe that if this is a recall and there is a defective part which could potentially cause death, they should fix it at no charge.
