Vehicle Speed Control Problems of Acura MDX - part 2

Starting around 20,000 miles, my car started to majorly hesitate when I would step on the pedal trying to accelerate. Over time the problem became increasingly worse to the point where the car would slip into neutral causing a major hazard driving on the tollway when my car would decelerate when stepping on the gas pedal. This has caused me to have several very close near accidents. The dealership would keep saying that they could not replicate the problem. I have taken my car in on 8 separate occasions for this safety concern (4 different Honda/Acura dealerships trying to get help since the place I bought the car wouldn’t not help with a solution. ) my car has also begun back rolling (15+ feet) when in drive. And yesterday, suddenly accelerated from 0 to 35 when waiting for our driveway gate to open. There are major issues with sudden acceleration when driving a speeds under 20mph and deceleration issue when stepping on the gas pedal trying to accelerate. I have opened a report with Honda over a year ago and keep getting the run around.

I was driving on the highway at normal highway speeds of 70mph when the car lost the ability to accelerate, and I was forced to make an emergency stop on the side of the interstate. With the heavy traffic on the interstate, this scenario could have been catastrophic as there is currently construction and no place to pull over for emergencies. The vehicle was towed to hubler Acura in greenwood in where they performed a diagnostic test and no known issues were found on their diagnostic computer. However, the issue is not happening on a computer at the dealer, the issue occurred on the interstate while traveling 70mph. I have read several message boards where the users have posted similar experiences about losing power when accelerating in their 2017 Mdx. The dealerships seem to offer a transmission fluid change or a computer reset as a solution. I have previously had the same acceleration issue and had these two items already completed within the past 90 days and neither issue resolved the problem, which further led to the most recent interstate incident. From my online research, Honda is either unwilling or unable to diagnose this common transmission problem and they need to be held accountable for their inaction. This issue needs to be addressed before it creates a scenario with fatalities.

When trying to accelerate after braking the vehicle has a massive hesitation where it just sits there doing nothing literally for a solid second. Not only being very frustrating it's imo very dangerous. If I'm at a yield and then need to merge quickly, if I'm getting on a highway from a parking lot, if I'm trying to switch lanes in traffic, etc etc the vehicle just bogs down and does nothing for that 1-2 seconds. Drive the vehicle normally, apply the brakes and then right away take your foot off the brake and accelerate. You don't have to mash the accelerator, even with light to moderate pressure you will notice that lag where the vehicle is just sitting there with zero power. If you do accelerate moderately or hard after a second or 2 of doing nothing it will just completely jerk into motion. Does the same thing in all modes, it's actually worse in sport and sport+ mode because you get more power after the hesitation after braking moderately hard from 40mph to 15mph because someone cut in front. Then I changed lanes and had to accelerate because that other lane was going quite a bit faster. Hit the gas and nothing for what seemed like the longest 1. 5 seconds until the thrust came back online pattern: from stop --> accelerate for about approx 20 mph -->release the gas pedal and immediately apply the gas pedal. Another pattern: travel in about 40 mph, apply the brakes to a speed below 20 mph and apply gas pedal. Consulted with the dealer multiple times and they think this is normal for 2018 Mdxes. But it is indeed a safety concern. The dealer said they applied TSB 20-015 tcm update and it still has not resolved the problem. This is a huge securty issue and danger hazzard. The issue happens every day. Below reported date is the latest occurrence.

The contact owns a 2022 Acura Mdx. The contact stated while driving 50 mph, the brakes applied independently. The contact stated the brake warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle decelerated to 10 mph however, quickly started accelerating after depressing the accelerator pedal. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 5,500.

Driving east on interstate 20/59 10 miles east of meridian, ms November 17, 2021 around 2:00 pm. A lot of trucks on the road. Had speed control set at 69 mph. Came up behind a semi doing about 65, pulled over to the left lane to go around him. When I got about half way all of a sudden all hell breaks loose. Vehicle goes in into emergency stop with lights flashing all over the dash. Vehicle brakes to around 30 mph within a couple of hundred feet with semi's and cars beside and behind me. Finally got the vehicle over to the side of the rode without and accident. (a miracle inself). Code dtc p0716. After about an hour of shutdown, started engine and all messages were gone. Took it to the Acura dealer and they, evidently, updated the tcm software. I had not been notified that it needed and update which is negligence on Acura. This incidence could have been a catastrophe with possible deaths. Now my wife is really afraid to drive this vehicle.

I was getting ready to pass a semi and when I went to accelerate I had no power. I pushed the pedal several times with no power. Then it finally kicked in and the car accelerated. I was almost rear ended due to me losing power. This has happened multiple times. No lights ever come on. I am also experiencing the car completely shutting off while stopped. When it does this, a message pops up that I need to shift to park. It takes a few tries and then I can restart the car. I have taken it to the dealership and they can’t replicate either issue. They told me there are no TSB’s on these issues. Dates this occurred in 2021: 8/27, 9/9, 10/5, 11/5. Dates this occurred in 2022: 3/4, 3/28, and 4/10.

Gas petal is very touchy. It accelerates to fast even when you try to barely push the petal. And causes to shift hard.

While driving with adaptive cruse control on, I was approaching slower vehicle. I wanted to go around it without breaking. While driving already on high speed (70m/h) I press acceleration pedal so I can safely go around slower vehicle. I was half way into passing line (last left line), there was a car already behind me approaching with higher speed, when I suddenly completely lost power and lots of lights illuminated on the dash. Car behind me notice that I start loosing speed rapidly so he start braking that I could hear his tires. I didnt know what to do so I just kept going to emergency stopping line where I almost crash into the concrete divider. I manage to stop vehicle safely by pure luck. After stopping I notice that car is not shifting, and sh-awd system, blind spot ass, emission system and transmission system fault lights came on. I called insurance agent to send road side assistance, but while waiting on the call I start the car again (like 15min after this incident) and all lights were still on except transmission. I tried car and it was shifting normally now, except sh-awd was not working (I didnt have power to the rear differential). This could be very tragic event if both me and the driver behind me didnt react properly. I had two more passengers in the car, from which one was 15 months old child. I was reading that this could be transmission system update issue, but my dealer did update transmission already.

I own a 2017 Acura Mdx. When accelerating from a stop it hesitates for a second or two and then jerks when it finds its gear. This happens every time the vehicle is used. Merging onto the interstate or switching lanes can be very dangerous.

Its showing all the symptoms of the recall that indicates the transmission needs replaced and radiator as well and has obvious signs of over heating and gear dameges. Engine light and flashing d5 with all codes from powertrain.

Multiple systems indicator failures wen on, per attached pictures. The transmission was stuck in the 1st gear, the vehicle was vibrating and was unable to accelerate. This created a driving hazard, as I was on the roadway.

Bought vehicle new in 2018. Starting in 2020, brought car to dealership complaining that car, at times, did not accelerate when prompted. Vehicle pauses, then lurches forward. Very dangerous when making left turns and when merging with traffic. My wife (who used to be primary driver of this vehicle), refused to continue to drive it . . . And neither I nor my wife would allow our now age 21 daughter to drive it. So this vehicle (as unsafe as it was) became my back and forth to work vehicle. Vehicle was brought to the dealership on at least 4 or 5 times with this complaint - from 2020 through 2024. . . One time it was at dealership for almost 2 weeks dealership would never fully admit to the issue - often times one service person, through test driving would notice the issue, only to then be told it was "normal driving" of this vehicle. On a regular basis, car would stop (pause) "in the face of oncoming traffic - my heart would skip a beat, only for the car to then resume accelerating on many occasions, I discussed with service team - always to be told that there were no known issues fast forward to 2024 - when Acura notified me of a recall regarding the fuel pump. . . . I quickly scheduled an appointment, brought the car in this past week and had the recall done. Speaking with the serviceperson when checking the car in, I brought up the past issues that I have had and asked if this recall was the likely reason. . . . . The service person - without hesitation said "absolutely". . . . . . I then asked him, so was "Acura lying to me ll these past visits". . . . . His response was "sounds like it to me" since getting the car back - the hesitation has stopped. I have paperwork from all my previous visits - with responses from their technicians I am certain there was consumer fraud conducted by the dealership I bought and serviced this vehicle from (open road Acura - wayne NJ). Add to it , the inconveniences I experienced and the fear that my wife and daughter had of the vehicle.

The steering and the wheels lock when turning. It goes into neutral while driving.

November 10, 2019 traveling on highway at ~65 mph, pressed accelerator to pass car and vehicle would not speed up. . . Felt like the car was in neutral. After about 7 to 10 seconds the transmission finally kicked in and the car accelerated. If this happened on a 2 lane road the lack of transmission delivering power to wheels could have resulted in a head on collision. Service apt scheduled with Acura dealership where purchased and was told they could find no 'codes' or alerts in cars computer and that they found nothing wrong. The did say they reprogrammed the transmission software. . . But they have done that 2 other times. Car has only 35k miles on it and we have brought car into Acura dealership 4 times to address the harsh shifting of transmission and told them each time we felt it was a serious safety concern. The above incident of no power when attempting to pass on highway is the first time that has happened. . But is a very serious concern. We were told for the 3rd time that the harsh shifting and gear-wandering was a 'characteristic' of this make / model car and that Acura has been trying to address the issue with transmission software updates. I have seen many online complaints of the "gear-wandering' transmission issue online and have also read similar safety complaints of car losing transmission power at highway speeds. Please thoughtfully review this complaint and contact me if you need additional information. We firmly believe that the known reported issues of the 2016 Acura Mdx shawd transmission problems are a huge safety issue. This 7 seater SUV is driven by many families!.

Speed control would not engage. This has happened before. Auto brakes engaged while driving down city street at 40 mph in outside lane of 4 lane road. No cars in front or immediately to my left. Fortunitly there were no cars/trucks behind me. Car came to suddened stop engaging the seat belts. After stopping I put put on gas again and drove 2 more blocks before I parked car for 2+ hours. Called dealership & drove to service department for repair. Dealer kept car overnight and said there were no issues they could find by driving or checking diagnostic computer records. So there was nothing they could do. These electrical issues have appeared and could not be duplicated in the past 20 months. . . . . . 1 - suddended emergency braking - 1x, speed control not engaging - 3 times, passenger side mirror not closing - 10+ times, car locking or not unlocking doors with key inside car - 3 times. Once will at airport and with car running.

On June 30th 2019 after leaving from work I was on my way to pier 1 which is approximately 2 miles away. I turned into the parking lot parked in front of pier 1 and all of a sudden my car accelerated out of control. It jumped the curb crashed through pier 1 window into the store and didn't stop until it hit a wall. At this time I'm in shock glass is every where and I could move I hear people in the background telling me to get out of the car but I was frozen from what just happened. I just want to hold Acura accountable because I see this has happened to several people.

Transmission shifting hard. I also hear and feel a grinding sound. When shifting on the lower gears, it shifts hard. I have read that there is a bulletin on this but no recall yet. There have been many complaints. Bulletin TSB no. 15-054. How many complaints are needed before a recall is issued?.

At accelerated speed on the interstate the car stalls and rpms go up. The last time it happened the engine light came on. I pulled over and turned it off for a few minutes. When I turned it back on the light was off and the rpms were normal. I took it to the dealership and they found nothing wrong. This has happened at least 6 times.

While cruising at about 70mph on the interstate, I attempted to accelerate and the vehicle rpm would drop to about 1000 rpm and not allow me to control the acceleration. Regardless of various attempts to accelerate the vehicle continue to lose mph. After 5-10 seconds, I was finally able to regain control of the vehicle. This has happen on about 6 occasions since I purchased the vehicle in 2015. I've attempted to have this issue resolved at the dealership service. On each occasion they stated a software fix would correct the problem but this continues. I've also had the issue occur while driving about 40mph on the city street. I was told by one dealership (the above incident occur while more than 500 miles from home)that this appears to be a transmission issue and that it would need to be replaced to resolve and would be covered by warranty, this dealership provided me a computer code from my vehicle. My current home dealership continues to state it is only a software issue, despite the fact that I had brought my vehicle in for maintenance 2-days prior to my trip and a software update was performed. The first time the occurred my vehicle had less than 20,000 miles, the vehicle currently as about 77,000 miles.

I recently bough the car and I am now regretting it because the 9 speed transmission is very sluggish and doesn't provide power when needed. In the morning when I start the car the car just lags the power until I press hard on the gas pedal. We took this on a road trip to California from utah and at times I feel like I don't have ample power to pass other drivers and it takes a few seconds to think before it does anything. I have an appt scheduled with Acura tomorrow to see what can be done to fix this otherwise I am taking this SUV back to the dealer for another car. I am very disappointed with Acura for making this kind of a transmission and I wish I have kept my BMW.

The contact owns a 2016 Acura Mdx. The contact stated while driving 20 mph, when driving over a speed bump the vehicle accelerated independently and impacted the vehicle in front. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. Air bags did not deploy. The contact stated she was not injured. The contact stated the driver of the other vehicle sustained unknown injuries but was not aware if medical attention was required. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not drivable and was towed to an independent collision center. The vehicle failure was not diagnosed by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact also mentioned after the accident the vehicle was serviced under NHTSA campaign number: 19v060000 (fuel system, other) at norris Acura (8559 baltimore national pike, ellicott city, MD 21043) on 10/11/2019. The contact stated after the recall remedy the vehicle had a fuel leak. The dealer was contacted, however stated she would be reasonable for diagnoses and repairs fees. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 64,053.

When the car accelerator pedal is pressed, from either a stop or slowly rolling from a stop, there is no response from the vehicle, no transmission downshift, no sounds - it just sits as if the car is off for 1-3 seconds and then accelerates/lunges. This happens everyday, intermittently throughout depending on where we are driving and the number of stops/turns but it is repeatable. This is a safety concern when attempting to turn left when there is oncoming traffic. I have reported this to the dealership of purchase 3-4 times and have been told there is nothing wrong with the vehicle.

While driving downhill a car approx 1000 feet ahead of me was slowing down to turn right while the car was still turning but completely out of the intersection the automatic brakes came on and came to a complete stop. The car that turned right was down the street it had turned on completely out of sensor range and the automatic brakes would not let off, when trying to accelerate it got stuck in gear but would not budge. Like when you dont shift a gear for too long in a stick shift car. Finally the brakes let off and I was able to drive but further down the same hill the automatic brakes did the same thing again while trying to accelerate to change lanes, there was not a single car infront of me at this point and no reason for the automatic brakes to do this. Both incidents almost caused me to be rear ended.

On August 21, 2018 I pulled into a parking stall, and realized I was not aligned properly. I clicked on reverse so that I could realign within my designated space, and the car lunged forward jumping the curb and hitting the building approximately 4-5 feet in front of me. Both driver side airbags deployed. $13,000 worth of damage to my car. Within the first week of getting this car is 2017, I've had many issues such as failure to start and brake warning light coming on randomly while driving. Had to have the vehicle towed at least 3x to the dealer, for which they could not replicate the issues.

The letters on the shifting controls are wearing off with normal use creating an unsafe condition as it is becoming unclear which shift buttons put the vehicle in park. This has occurred on both my 2016 Honda vehicles. Honda has acknowledged this issue but only offers to pay one half of the cost of correcting this dangerous issue.

9 speed transmission lurches forward when trying to stop - sending the car forward while trying to brake. Happens when the car should shift between gears 3-2 and 1-2/2-1. Acura dealership said it's the fuel saver once, normal the second time, and updated the tcm/pcm another. There is no one addressing this when it could send my car into another car when trying to stop. The last time I drove it on Sunday 7/15 I was slowing down to turn into a shopping center, going around 20mph when the car jerked forward, snapping my neck forward 12"-14" then back again. The car is at the dealership now with the service adviser saying the lurching is the fuel saver and that Acura won't pay for a warrantied item unless the service light/codes are there.

Rpms are fluctuating. Tachometer bounces up and down when slowly accelerating.

Tl-the contact owns a 2017 Acura rdx. The contact stated that they were attempting to back out the driveway and the vehicle accelorated on it's own. The vehicle was placed in park quickly. They had to slam on the brake with extreme force. The vehicle has done this on a numerous times. The vehicle has accelorated on its own more than once. Another time when they were driving down the highway and the contact had to drive on to the shoulder. No warning lights illuminated during any of the failures however a green light with the word "main" pops up. The vehicle was towed and diagnossed at chapman Acura (520) 445-4061 4600 e 22nd st, tucson, az 85711 where they were informed that the dealer did not know how to service the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not informed. The failure mileage was 20,000. The failure is not related to recall. Jw.

The contact owns a 2005 Acura Mdx. While driving approximately 10 mph and coming to a stop, the vehicle independently accelerated. The vehicle was taken to island Acura (3350 sunrise hwy, wantagh, NY 11793, (855) 435-5850) to be diagnosed, but the mechanic was unable to retrieve a fault code or duplicate the failure. The contact was given an estimate to replace the throttle body, but was informed that it may not remedy the failure. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 49,000.

Transmission automatically shifts from drive to neutral while going down the highway. It's dangerous to be in traffic and lose the ability to accelerate. I have replaced the shifter and had it adjusted numerous times. Acura refuses to accept responsibility for this problem, even though there are innumerous complaints on this very issue. This is a safety concern.

I was mailed a letter about a warranty extension for my associated VIN. I definitely have experienced associated issues with my Mdx. After calling the Acura dealership on 11/24/17, I was given an appointment for 11/28/17 and I was told they would inspect my car over 2 days and provide a loaner car. My experience was "to say the least" the inverse; extremely disappointing. The service technician took my car for a test drive and told me nothing was wrong. In addition, the service team was extremely unprofessional as once again, the customer was wrong. Please advise about the next steps for service. I am extremely disappointed with Acura unwillingness to listen to the customer. I did take the car for service associated with this issue about a month prior. Overall problem is many times I experience shifting and accelerating hesitation that is jerky. Which indicates a problem with the transmission: this is what the warranty extension states . . . . The transmission shifts poorly.

All dash display warning lights will come on sporadically while standing or in motion, last from a few hours to a few days or so, which causes vehicle speed to decrease and certain features to not work. Dealer service unable to resolve problem, but will clear error codes in computer to shut off warning lights.

The 2017 Acura Mdx will accelerate without your control and surges or lurches when you step on the gas almost hitting the car in front of you. Acura is aware of this and says it is the difference between the 6 speed transmissions of their older cars and the new 9 speed transmission but they will not fix it or offer a solution.

I believe the 9-speed transmission in the 2017 Mdx presents serious safety issues. One of my major concerns is the significant "lurching" I get when parking on a slope, shifting to "park" and then taking my foot off the brake. On snow or ice, the car could easily slide some distance. I similar lurching also frequently occurs when shifting into drive or reverse when on a slope and then starting to accelerate. My second major concern is that when I downshift on a down-slope in lieu of braking, the car actually first speeds significantly up after downshifting and does not slow down as it should. I do a significant amount of driving in mountains where down-shifting is safer than braking and this is a major safety issue. Lastly, the car hesitates at times when accelerating from a stop. I have taken the car back to the dealer at least twice and am told that these issues are just the characteristics of the car.
