Front Driver Side Air Bag Inflator Problems of Audi A6

2008 Audi A6. Consumer writes in regards to replacement parts not available to repair frontal airbag inflator recall notice. The consumer stated the recall repair would take two separate occasions to be fully completed. The consumer stated this was unacceptable due to the nearest dealer being 3. 5 hours away. Takata recall. The contact owns a 2010 Audi A6. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 16v382000 (air bags) for the passenger frontal air bag inflator; however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. In addition, the contact stated that the air bag warning indicator was illuminated. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The local dealer (Audi north orlando located at 139 n oregon st, stanford, florida 32771) continued to inform the contact that they would have parts available the next month and that they were on a wait list; however, the air bags received were for newer vehicles. The failure mileage was unknown. Parts distribution disconnect.

Takata has reported that the passenger frontal airbag inflator could potentially rupture (due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute high humidity and temperature cycling) if the vehicle is involved in a crash where the frontal airbags are designed to deploy. In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material, which may result in serious injury or death to vehicle occupants.

Audi recommends avoiding use of the front passenger seat whenever possible until the recall repair has been performed.
