I researched and found that there was a recall for this exact issue for my make, model and year. I contacted my local dealership as well as BMW north America customer service. 15 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2005 BMW 530

Failure Date: 06/26/2015

I bought this car last year with 140,000 miles on it. The passenger side airbag light and seatbelt light both came on after maybe a month of driving. I took it to the BMW shop and they said that it came on because I had something heavy sitting in the seat---nothing heavier than my purse. They wanted to charge me a diagnosis fee to turn the light off but I refused. That is not a caution in the handbook so how was I suppose to know that was problem. I'm worried that my seatbelt and airbag may malfunction in the case of an accident. I had the same problem with my 2005 BMW 525.

16 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2005 BMW 530

17 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2004 BMW 530

Failure Date: 05/12/2014

The airbag light is on in my car, as well as seat belt light. It appears the after doing some research that the pad in the passenger seat has failed with very low miles, and very little use. All of these cars with these pads in the passenger seats should be replaced under recall. There was a previous recall to reposition the pad or something to avoid cracking, but these safety related parts are clearly junk that were installed when new weather they were reworked, or repositioned in the seat. BMW should be replacing all these seat sensor pads under recall and soon, many of these cars now have non working airbags due to this issue, and it affects the safety and functionality of the car all together. Model years affected are 2004 2005 2006 2007 at the very least it seams after reading extensively on the issue.

18 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2004 BMW 530

Failure Date: 03/01/2014

While driving my car, with my wife as a passenger, I've noticed that the "passenger airbag off" light is still on (even though there is a passenger in the seat). I went to the stevens creek BMW dealership to diagnose the issue and they said that the reason the passenger airbag light is on is because the sensor is not sensing a passenger due to cable corrosion. That seems odd, given I keep my car in the garage and it never had any water damage. Also, I believe that it is a poor engineering on BMW's side, since in case of corroded cable or faulty sensor the default behavior should be to always keep the airbag "on". It is better be safe than sorry and (in case of accident) deploying an airbag when there is no passenger is better than not deploying an airbag when there is a passenger. . . This is a case of "potentially saving someone's life" vs "potentially saving a few dollars". . .

20 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2006 BMW 530

Failure Date: 01/03/2014

I received a safety recall stating the sensor mat for the front passenger airbag is defective in January 2014 and the airbags do not work. The expected date for repairs would be March 2014. Called in March and was told they did not have a solution and it would be may 2014. Called on may23rd and was insured they had a solution and recall for repairs were being sent out by may 31st, 2014. Called again on June 13, 2014 and am now told they still have no solution and are hoping for July or August of 2014. My airbag light has been on since January for a known defect with BMW and still no resolution. This is not a reasonable period of time and a safety issue that is not being corrected.

28 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2003 BMW 530

Failure Date: 06/05/2012

I was driving my 2003 BMW 530i, while I was driving I used the volume control on the steering wheel to turn the radio down, after depressing the button immediately I smelled and recognized there was smoke coming from the steering wheel. I pulled over, and turned the car off. After several minutes I turned the ignition and proceeded to inspect the car. The volume controls did not work any more along with the horn does not blow anymore. Actually when I depress the horn it makes the steering wheel rise up and down. The airbag light flickers off and on. My radio works sporadically. I called BMW of north America and asked about any recalls on this vehicle after seeing a posting online about airbag malfunctioning. This seemed to fit my situation however the gentlemen who took my called said there was no recalls on this model. . . . . This was disappointing and my problems arises more and more after this. I get a transmission failsafe warning almost all of the time because the car seems like it wants to cut off while driving at times. My brake lights flicker off and on at times and then stays on while driving. I got a warning ticket from an police officer. He said it is a safety hazard. My headlights flicker off and on at times while in operation. I get a engine failsafe warning at times and the car goes into limp mode. . . . . . .

29 Air Bag Light On problem of the 2004 BMW 530

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

I am writing to see if I can obtain some assistance with a problem I have been having with the safety equipment on my 530i, specifically the passenger side airbag. Early in 2012 I noticed that when my wife sat in the passenger seat the air bag light on the overhead light unit would occasionally come on. It would not stay on for long but would come on and off periodically. I made an appointment with BMW on may 12 to have the issue looked into. The car had 87437 miles on it at this time. They told me there was no problem with the system as no codes were stored for a problem with the airbag. They could not explain why this was occurring. Since this time the frequency of the light coming on has increased. I returned to concours BMW on March 24, 2014 for the same issue. I was told that the air bag may not work and to fix it would cost $1724. 00. BMW said the safety information module was bad.

Owner of a 2004 BMW 530i . Upon starting my car one morning for my trip to work, the passenger air bag malfunction indicator lamp came on, reflected on the dash near the speedometer. There was no movement of the car at that time. I made an appointment with my local BMW dealer, and after having it evaluated, was told my problem is not covered under a warranty . . . That it would cost me $887. 08 plus tax just to repair it (replace module, program vehicle, passenger door airbag faulty). I do not believe this to be true, that the air bag malfunction is not covered, as too many other owners (from my research via the internet) of this vehicle have had the same issues with similar mileage.
