BMW 530 owners have reported 17 problems related to air bag not deploy (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Passenger restraint system error code. The airbag will not deploy! I am afraid to allow anyone to ride in the passenger seat! the exact same issue brought a recall for all 5 series from 2004 - 2006 and apparently some 2007 models. They are telling me mine isn't covered! this is a safety issue! do I have any recourse??.

I have a 05 BMW 530i with sport package and I got an error with the passenger restrain system malfunction. In this situation the front passenger air bags will not deploy even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur and occupant protection provided by the system would not be possible. BMW did not want to take care of this comment and recall problem!!.

Have researched numerous forums regarding car issues. "passenger restraint malfunction" alarm appears on idrive with airbag light illuminated and seat belt light illuminated on dash board. Reads that parts of the passenger restraint system have failed or are faulty. Front passenger air bag may or may not deploy, along with other passive restraint devices. Have not received any notifications from BMW regarding recall issue, but discovered recently there is a recall for my car model/year. Am awaiting a service appointment to have it evaluated, will not pay to have it repaired if dealership says it is not part of the recall. "steering wheel lock malfunction" on idrive. Light illuminated recently and continues to stay on. Can currently start and run my car, along with turn steering wheel and hear the steering wheel unlock when key is inserted into ignition. Also researched on BMW forums, known to many 3/5/6 series in my year of production having similiar issues in europe and USA. No recall from BMW on this also? will also not pay for this repair as it appears to be a defective part for the model year by BMW.
My 2004 BMW 530i has both the seatbelt and airbag light on display at all times on my dashboard. These lights on are caused by a faulty front passenger seat occupant detection mat which BMW has an extended warranty on. After dropping my car to the BMW dealership to get this repaired, I was informed my extended warranty expired roughly 2 months prior and I cannot have this work performed under warranty. They charged me $140 for the diagnostics and said I would have to pay $1050 out of pocket to get repaired. I immediately reached out to BMW of north America and informed them of my situation as this occurred while my vehicle was still under warranty. I was hoping they could fix my car in good faith as this is a known issue or even provide me with a discounted repair. Unfortunately two months went by with no response. When I reached out again they said no this is not their headache and I am responsible for all costs and repairs related to this. This is a serious malfunction which I am surprised is not considered a recall. In the safety recall notice it specifically states if both warning lamps are illuminated simultaneously, BMW recommends not to use the front passenger seat until the vehicle has been serviced. Also, the safety recall notice says that the front passenger airbags will not deploy even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur and occupant protection provided by the system will not be possible. Obviously this is a huge safety issue which BMW needs to address. An extended warranty on such a sensitive matter is not sufficient and a recall should be issued.

We were up in the mountains in an isolated area when I tried to start the car. At first the car wouldn't start. Finally it started and the whole display lite up. The steering wheel would not go to the driving position, plus several malfunction lights strated flashing. I put the car in gear and started to drive, the automatic transmission would not shift and I had to drive to the nearest town (10 miles) in third gear. We stopped at the first auto shop we could locate and have the mechanic look at it. He told us we would have to take it to the dealership in denver. We started the car again and this time we got two red lights indicating a passenger side airbag malfunction and the seatbelt malfunction. In addition the steering wheel failed to go down into the driving position. When I called the dealer to check, he told me there is a recall on that issue though my VIN was not included. They wanted $1300. 00 to fix it. I called BMW USA and they told me the same thing. My car was manufactured a month after the recalled cars, presently I am driving with defective airbags that may not deploy. I think BMW should be held responsible as they are well aware of the life threating malfunction and have issued recalls on a few cars.
Air bag light illuminated , passenger restraint system error . Current recall on over 200,000 cars doesn't include the 05 530i as stated by dealer . Airbag on passages side rendered in operable with fault codes. As per recall this is due to defective passenger side mat. I believe this to be an extremely hazardous safety issue. Airbags will not deploy upon impact ! recall id # 05v504000 . As I have seen in the complaints filed I'm not the only 2005 530i with this issue . I have seen numerous complaints , I guess BMW is waiting for a fatality to occur .
BMW is recalling 200,000 my 2006 3 series sport seat, my 2004-2006 5 series standard and sport seat, and my 2004-2006 x3 passenger vehicles. Depending on the manner and frequency of the front passenger's entry and exit, small cracks have developed in the mat. If this occurs, the front passenger air bags, with the exception of the head protection system, will be deactivated and the air bag warning lamp as well as the passenger air bag "on-off" lamp will be illuminated. Consequences: in this situation the front passenger air bags will not deploy even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur and occupant protection provided by the system would not be possible. Remedy: dealers will rework the front passenger seat sensor mat so that external force application to the seat does not cause a crack to the mat. The recall began on November 6, 2008. BMW will also extend the warranty on these vehicles to 10 years from first registration without any mileage limit. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417. I have contacted BMW and they say my VIN is not part of this recall, however I am experiencing the same issue as the recalled vehicles. I am worried about passenger safety! please help!.
The contact owns a 2006 BMW 530i. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the warning mat sensor illuminated on the instrument panel, indicating that the air bag would not deploy in the event of a crash. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was advised to replace the mat sensor. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but failed to offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 08v384000 (air bags:frontal). No repairs were performed. The failure mileage was 105,800 and the current mileage was 105,300.
I have my car routinely serviced with a certified BMW technician at a BMW service center. Recenlty my technician told me my car gave a code for passenger airbag failure. My car has been in no accidents. Currently I have a "fault detection" of the front passenger airbag sensor. If someone were to sit in the front passenger seat and if the vehicle sustained any front end damage, the front passenger airbag would not deploy. As of now the vehicle cannot determine if someone is sitting in the front passenger seat or not. This failure will not allow the front passenger airbag to deploy if the vehicle were in a collision. BMW is fully aware of this issue. Infact, they have stated that cracks are caused due to getting in and out of the vehicle on the passenger side, as a result, the airbag sensor fails in the front passager seat. There has been a recall for this code however, BMW claims my car is not covered. The year, make, model and seat all qualify for this recall. Safety is a very serious concern and I cannot see how this cannot be covered.
The contact owns a 2004 BMW 530i. The contact stated that while sitting in the passenger seat the air bag light came on indicating that the passenger side air bag malfunctioned. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who informed the contact that the mat which holds the sensor cracked. This was a known failure with this year make and model vehicle. The manufacturer issued a recall regarding the air bags:frontal (08v384000) but the VIN was not a part of the recall. Previously the contact had the air bag sensor replaced in the passenger seat in 2006 at 33,000 miles but the seat had malfunctioned again. The contact stated that this was a major safety issue because the air bag may not deploy if the vehicle was involved in a serious crash. The failure mileage was 77,000.
My vehicle, a 2006 BMW 530i showed a message on the display menu stating that I had an issue with "the restraint system". It stated that in the even of an accident, my airbags will not deploy. I am concerned with this issue as it is safety related. BMW took care of it in 2009, and I recall the service advisor stating that the mat was "patched up", never replaced. But did mention that if I had any issues with this system, that I had a 10year warranty with no limit on miles as it is a safety recall. Today, I've experieced the same issue yet again. Seems like it was a temporary fix. I contacted my local dealer, and they stated that because my vehicle has a salvage title, I have no warranty. I dont understand why they tried to fix the issue initially, then decline the promised warranty (which I have a letter for). Any help to resolve my issue would be greatly appriciated. Best regards.
The contact owns a 2004 BMW 530i. The contact stated that his BMW passenger sensor mat activates on the instrument panel to alert him that the air bags will not deploy on the passenger side in the event of a crash. The dealer stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 08v384000 (air bags:frontal), although the failures were identical. The failure mileage was 60,000.
The contact owns a 2004 BMW 530i. The contact stated that the air bag indicator system is deactivated and remains illuminated. Therefore, the air bags would not deploy. The sensor underneath the passenger seat has cracks in it and needs to be replaced. The repair would cost between $1,300-$1,600. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 08v384000 (air bags:frontal). The failure mileage was 60,000.
The consumer's vehicle was involved in a crash with 2004 BMW 325i. Upon impact, both air bags did not deploy. The impact was the passenger side front door. The passenger side window shattered and fell into pieces. The car was taken to the dealership for repairs. The consumer has not yet reported the air bag failure to the manufacturer. There was one injury. A police report and pictures were taken. The consumer has the pictures. The insurance company has been notified. The speed was 25 mph. Ms. Packard: the summary report created by the vehicle safety hot line does not clearly identify your vehicle. Please review the information on the vehicle owner's questionnaire and verify that your vehicle is a 2004 BMW 530i. Also, please provide a copy of the police report and photographs.
I had stoped behind a stalled car on us95 in las vegas, nv and was rear ended and pushed into the car in front. Both the drivers seat and the passenger seat broke, and we were both nearly prone and under the lap and seat belts. Also, the air bags did not deploy which I am not sure they should or shouldn't have. I have no knowledge as to what will be done to the car since it could well be "totalled" as a loss. No internal injuries for the driver and passenger, but some scrapes and bruises.
