Tl the contact owns a 2013 BMW X3. While driving 15 mph and approaching a stop sign, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and "drivetrain malfunction" and "low oil pressure" appeared on the instrument panel. In addition, the contact stated that a rattling noise was coming from the engine compartment and the vehicle started to shake. The contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and powered off the engine. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the contact's residence. The following day, the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the timing chain was fractured and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer and was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 79,000.
