Battery Problems of BMW X5

BMW X5 owners have reported 8 problems related to battery (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Battery problem of the 2007 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/11/2010

In may 2007, I purchased a new BMW 2007 X5 4. 8 vehicle. Since then, I have experienced "high battery drainage" warnings at least 12 times. The dealership says the computer doesn't show a history of this message and it does not find a problem with the battery. The car engine also fails to start after repeated attempts- the lights, radio and air turn on, but the engine does not. After several hours, the engine starts. This has occurred at least 12 times since 11/2007 as well- but independently of the "high battery drainage" warning. The dealership fails to find a problem with the engine starting when I take the car in. In addition, the engine (automatic transmission) stays locked in one gear and the engine revs up while driving, failing to automatically shift to the next gear unless the driver releases the gas pedal or pushes the gas peddle to "throw it" into the next gear. It would also lurch on inclines, but stopped experiencing this problem (perhaps coincidentally) when I removed my cellphone from the car's bluetooth/hands-free system. The dealership again said that it could not detect any problems. BMW USA is no help either, since they rely on the dealerships to report issues to them. If the local dealers aren't reporting the issues that owners experience simply because they can't find an answer, then nothing can be done to ensure the safety of the owners and their passengers driving their vehicles. I believe a problem exists with the electronic system and perhaps something else. I have seen complaints by other 2007 X5 owners for the same issues on websites such as edmunds. Com and owners locally where I live. Please assist us, because it's become clear that we have exhausted our recourse with the BMW dealerships. Below is the date of the most recent incident.

2 Battery problem of the 2002 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/16/2010

The contact owns a 2002 BMW X5. While driving approximately 25 mph approaching a traffic signal, the brake warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The engine stalled within seven to ten minutes after the brake warning illuminated. The failure didnt prevent the contact from opening the door remotely. The defective battery was replaced with a new battery. The vehicle was driven for twenty minutes with the new battery which functioned normally. The following morning the battery was inoperable. The original battery was recharged and installed in the vehicle. The vehicle was in operation for approximately 45 minutes and the engine stalled without warning. The dealer was notified for service repairs. The current mileage was 87,525. The failure mileage was 87,500.

3 Battery problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/10/2010

My brand new 2010 BMW X5 35d has stalled multiple times, in major intersections completely out of the blue. The vehicle flashes "engine malfunction" and "reduced power. " there is no way to cure this issue, and it only self-corrects after a matter of many minutes. When throttle is applied, during such an incident, the vehicle bucks wildly, between stalling and starting. There are many other BMW X5 owners having this issue. No fault codes are registering on the computer and the vehicle self-corrects after starting and stopping the engine multiple times via the push-bottom stop button. Once this took 3-hours to rectify, while I was stuck on the side of a busy highway. This has also happened at times in which I'm making left-hand turns in busy intersections, narrowly avoiding a high-speed impact. My vehicle has only 4,000 miles on it. My dealer has been unreceptive to the issue. I contacted BMW north America's customer service twice and they took a report but never contacted me back. I've left messages with the customer service department at BMW north America and still no resolve. This is a very dangerous situation. I have no idea as to when the vehicle will stall or malfunction. I feel I can handle an emergency, or at least lessen a potential impact in a worst case scenario, but I do not feel the same about my wife. The car looses all brake and steering pressure, and I feel very unsafe driving my family in this vehicle. Multiple other owners have sold their vehicles as a result, but those vehicles are going to end up in the hands of owners who will experience the same issues. It's only a matter of time before someone experiences this issue, in an intersection, and is killed by oncoming traffic. Please assist us in obtaining relief to this known issue. You can visit this forum, which is one of dozens, that complains about the issue in question. . Read more...

4 Battery problem of the 2007 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/17/2009

I purchased a new 2007 BMW X5 in December 2006. During the time I have owned the car I have had it in for service problems 18 times. Six of those times is for "high battery drain". The consequence is a car that might not always start. After three unsuccessful attempts to fix the battery drain problem they replaced the battery on the fourth attempt. Since the battery has been replaced I have had the car in two more times with the same battery drain problem. The dealership is now telling me I have battery problems because I do not drive the car enough. BMW recommends you drive the car at least 7,500 miles per year for proper battery operation. I have driven my car 12,000 a year, exceeding what they recommend. I have also had this vehicle in four times to fix a dmtl pump problem. BMW north America suggested that the battery drain has also caused the dmtl pump not to operate properly. The dealership said the dmtl pump problem was a result of a loose connection, then a gas cap leak, then the vent valve sticking open and lastly said on the fourth attempt to fix it that the dmtl pump just does not work properly and replaced it. What is it??? I do not receive the same answers from BMW north America versus the dealership. I also investigated a web forum pertaining to this issue and found dozens of other BMW owners with the same "high battery drain" problem. The battery drain problem is not because "you do not put enough miles on your car" as BMW claims. It is a manufacturers defect and needs to be investigated.

5 Battery problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

2008 BMW X5 has a faulty fuel injector pump and battery. The consumer stated the vehicle suddenly stopped in the middle of the highway. The consumer stated the vehicle stopped again in the middle of the highway after the fuel pump was supposedly replaced. The consumer was told again the fuel pump was faulty. The sunroof was inoperative and the camera used that gives guidance when backing out of spaces was inoperative as well.

6 Battery problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/17/2009

My 2008 BMW X5 is reporting high battery drain and it's only 13 months old with 5,000 miles. The dealer states the issue is because the vehicle is not driven at least 25 miles a day. If this is a requirement to owning the vehicle it was never mentioned when I purchased the vehicle. My own research on the internet indicates this is a well known problem by BMW. Yet the only solution offered is to replace the battery prematurely as it fails or hook the battery up to a trickle charger every night. As stated above, I was never informed this is a requirement of owning the vehicle. I realize this is not an immediate or impending safety threat. However, BMW should be held accountable to finding a solution for the consumer or recalling the vehicle so we have some recourse.

7 Battery problem of the 2005 BMW X5

Failure Date: 11/11/2008

1: we bought this BMW 2005 X5 in June 2008 and brought it into the dealership in June 08 for routine full electrical and mechanical diagnostic check. Upon completion of repairs/diagnostics, which took almost a week, dealership told us that there were no electrical and mechanical issues. Within just a few days after receiving delivery of the vehicle after the "clean bill of health" from the dealer, the car completely died. This incident occurred in the morning right before work resulting in logistical, financial, and safety issues. The car had to be jump started and the battery was replaced. In addition, the fuel gauge does not work properly and was brought up multiple times with the dealer without resolution. Within a few days the same situation occurred, again resulting in logistical, financial, and safety issues and the battery was replaced. Over the next week, we noticed about 16 other electrical and mechanical issues and brought the car back to the same dealership. After receiving the car back from the dealership, we continued to have problems with the car. About 2 months later, the battery had to be replaced again as the car died again. Within another month, the car died yet again! again, it was the battery. Again, the battery had to be replaced. 2: the failure is, amongst multiple other issues, a chronic battery drain. 3: last repair, about 2 weeks ago, the tcu unit was replaced, along with the battery. So far, we are on our 5th battery in 4 months in a newer BMW X5! our fuel gauge still does not read full when full and is inaccurate. Dealer states that "this is the way all Bmws are made".

8 Battery problem of the 2003 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/10/2003

October 2002 I purchased a new BMW X5 - shortly there after I started to experience intermittent electrical problems - headlights would not shut off without re-starting the car, interior lights would not turn off, the flashers would come on, the rear latch would disconnect, the keyless entry into the car would not work, battery was being drained and ultimately the batter wouldn't even hold a charge. After 3-4 months of experiencing these intermittent problems, I insisted the dealer take the car back and let me purchase a 2003 BMW X5. I received the newest BMW X5 on February 26, 2003 and on March 10, 2003, I started experiencing problems again! this time, when the ignition was turned on, the flashers came on and the interior lights would not shut off without me opening the door and closing it again - I had to manually shut off the flashers. Minutes later after driving the car, I shut off the ignition, got out of the car and used the keyless entry system to lock the car and arm the alarm. I wasn't able to lock the car doors but the alarm was activated. I had to turn the alarm off and open the door and close it again. Then I was able to lock it. The car has been at the dealer since and they do not know what is causing this problem.
