I would like to report a vanos issue the camshaft bolts loosen and break and it could be catastrophic. My bolts loosened and I caught it in time but if I didn't know any better I could've had a complete engine failure. My code originally came up as camshaft sticking. When the problem originated I was traveling on a main city road and my car went into reduced power mode.

This vehicle has numerous complaints about the vanos system. As I was driving on the highway with full traffic, my engine failed at 70 mph causing to me almost get killed in traffic as I fought my way the the shoulder. The car would not start, I took the car to the dealer and it seems that the vanos bolt backed out of the camshaft and caused catastrophic damage to the engine. I went to my warranty and they would not cover the damage due to it being the bolt that backed out. As they do not cover bolts. Now I am paying for a car that I cant drive and is currently sitting at BMW of mt. Laurel in new jersey with an 18k bill. This can happen to alot of people in these vehicles. That vanos unit is dangerous and should be recalled again with the correct bolts reinforced.

2012 BMW X5 xdrive50i purchased 10-25-2014 as certified pre-owned from BMW of austin with 54,554 miles and extended warranty to 8-1-17 or 100,000 miles. All service work and maintenance pertaining to engine done at BMW of austin on time as scheduled. Numerous recall work performed under warranty. Numerous issues with engine hesitation during acceleration reported to dealer, investigated by dealer, and supposedly "fixed" by dealer. Problems with engine hesitation at acceleration persisted. Problem reported twice to dealer the last month of eligible warranty alone along with statement that engine was burning through an excessive about of BMW supplied synthetic oil (on 7/5/17 and again on 7/21/17). Engine finally seized entirely on 10/25/17 at 89,000 miles while driving at 50 mph and was towed to BMW of austin. Service rep stated they could not get the engine started and requested approval to crack open the engine compartment to investigate. The work was approved and he said there was "unusual and several scoring on the number 6 cylinder that would require replacing the engine. " this type of catastrophic engine failure is not usual for a well maintained engine. The numerous recalls on this vehicle are suspect in the early engine failure. The known defects in material parts associated with the front drive shaft being the most suspect. To date, BMW USA is only willing to offer $5000 towards repair or trade in (now only worth $2500 due to non-functioning engine). I strongly believe this issue should be handled under the 10 year/120000 mile extended warranty provided by BMW for repairs related to the aforementioned recalls. They disagree.

N63 engine failure and battery charging problems. Engine blows massive amounts of white smoke from rear tailpipes and battery indicator states low charge. This is a known defect to BMW as thousands have complained but BMW is attempting to weasel there way out of this by not releasing a recall.

Previous vanos recall campain / fix has not worked and has caused catastrophic engine failure. After one year from recall work the turbo failed resulting in loss of engine power. Upon replacing turbo dealer noticed metal shavings in oil. Less than one year later and multiple engine issues there is loud engine knocking. Dealer claims again there is metal shavings in then oil and the engine and turbo need to be replaced. BMW na is refusing to cover work even though the vanos bolt issue is a well known and documented problem. These vanos bolts shear and drop into the timing chain causing metal shaving contamination to engine oil. Engine will eventuality loose power and shut down as metal works its way throughout the engine resulting in complete failure and necsitating replacement. BMW na knows this is a problem and they are refusing to do anything about this serious safety issue.

In addition, a message displayed indicating that the vehicle experienced an engine failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures and stated that they would try to repair the vehicle, but that it would take time to review the case; however, a case manager would be in touch. The approximate failure mileage was 29,000.

While driving at around 35 mph, engine started to stutter, shake violently, then completely shut off, leaving no power assist to steering or brakes. After about a dozen attempts, vehicle restarted, but this time with no error messages or dashboard warning lights. After several additional stalls, vehicle restarted but this time with the vehicle information display indicating "engine malfunction" and additional wording stating "reduced power available" (limp home mode) and "safe to drive". Based on the message and the fact the car restarted, I attempted to drive home. On the highway (long island expressway) while approaching highway speeds (45 mph) the engine again shook violently, stumbled, and shut off leaving no power steering or power brakes. Unfortunately, a tractor trailor was bearing down on my position from the rear and nearly struck my vehicle, due to the sudden power loss and catastrophic engine failure. Beyond the failure of the high pressure fuel pump (per BMW dealership), the vehicle information system is flawed as it did not remember the first catastrophic engine failure and instead reset itself. It advised although there was an engine malfunction, it was safe to drive with reduced power available. A catastrophic engine event like that should result in a warning and advisement not to drive the vehicle.

Same thing as last time. Started up the car, got it out of the driveway and the engine failed. Tried to start it again, the engine kept turning over and finally started up enough to go into the tow truck. At the BMW dealership again.

The vehicle sporadically suffers from engine failure when executing a sharp turn. This has happened so far on three separate and distinct instances during its first 1,000 miles of service, under the operation of two different drivers, with several passenger witnesses on one occasion. When these failures happen, the vehicle engine stalls or otherwise shuts itself off, which leads to loss of power steering in mid-turn and loss of braking. The only way to recover control of the vehicle is to let it coast to a stop, then put the vehicle in park, then push the ignition button to re-start the car.

BMW 2003 X5 stalled 3x. Abs, engine failed safe turned on. Irvine BMW repaired the problem. Last Monday oct. 19, 2009 I picked up my vehicle after driving in the freeway for about 10 miles it stalled again for the 3rd time.

My 2002 BMW X5's engine suddenly stalled on my wife few hours ago today, 09/16/08, while she was just passing through a stop light around where she work at. The mileage on the car is about 47000 miles. I'd to thank god she was not driving on a highway when it stalled. Now the car with my mechanic for diagnosis. About two months ago, the car's front fan that cools the engine failed to work all of a sudden while I was driving it on a highway with the ac on. I had to pull over on side of the road as the temp gauge went straight into the red zone. I had to get it replaced with a new one. Then, about a month ago, the car's fan motor that distributes the ac/heat into the car stopped working. I'd to had it replaced also with a new one. That's all & thanks.

On 2/11/08 cold day vehicle failed to start showing same signs as recalls on 2004 and 2007 models that are recalls. Vehicle sent to shop returned 2 days later while traveling on major expressway vehicle stalls out with out any advance warning as in 2004 and 2007 models sent back to shop vehicles oil and coolant mixing causing total engine failure. BMW's response not a recall for this year but aware of problem.

Started car to warm up on cold winter morning. Went outside five minutes later and the car had stalled. Could not start. Had towed to mechanic and total engine failure at 100,000 miles. BMW did not offer any assistance.
