I am reporting a safety issue related to the BMW recall 18v-755 affecting the egr cooler on my 2016 BMW X5 diesel. My vehicle experienced symptoms consistent with a failing egr cooler, including coolant loss and engine warning lights. Despite this recall being active for my model and VIN, BMW has denied coverage, stating either that the cooler was already replaced twice or that my vehicle is not eligible—without providing sufficient documentation or explanation. I am concerned that the recall remedy was not properly applied or that faulty replacement parts were used. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate whether BMW is properly honoring recall 18v-755 and ensuring safe, effective remedies are provided to affected customers like myself. I also request investigation into the lack of transparency and failure to document completed recall work. My VIN is [xxx] , and I can provide dealer records, service history, and diagnostic reports upon request. * what component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? egr cooler, it is available for inspection. * how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? the vehicle is now showing dangerous symptoms consistent with a thermal event risk, which this recall specifically warned about. The egr cooler is leaking coolant into the intake system, which can mix with soot and lead to engine fires, according to BMW’s own technical documentation. * has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes and the cooler has been replaced twice. * has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? it has been inspected at fremont BMW once, valley BMW twice. * were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? yes, low coolant warning, loss of coolant with no leaks. Problem first occurred April 2024 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information ac.

Had recall for egr cooler now getting check engine light with code p26b1.
The contact owns a 2015 BMW X5. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 40 mph, the contact observed smoke emanating from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road where he observed fire emanating from the engine compartment. The fire was extinguished by hand and the contact sustained hand injuries. Medical attention was not needed. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that an egr failure where coolant leaked and combined with diesel soot causing a fire. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000.
Egr failure where the diesel emissions come into the cabin via the hvac system dealer said the egr cooler needs to be replaced. This is a know problem and recall on the 2012 and 2013. This makes the fumes to the driver when first driving the car in the morning dangerous as carbon monoxide and diesel exhaust enter the car. My friend has an exact similar problem and this issue is known on all the BMW boards.

The contact owns a 2018 BMW X5. The contact stated while his wife was starting the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the exhaust gas recirculation (egr) cooling system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but experienced the failure a second time three days later. The contact took the vehicle back to the local dealer, where the vehicle was being diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 21v907000 (fuel system, diesel) however the VIN was not included. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 47,190.
My 2008 BMW X5 was taken to a shop to be diagnosed due to diagnosis as followed:( low coolant light coming on) “coolant crossover pipe from timing belt cover leaking” it is available for inspection, although it is not safe to drive. The low coolant light went off after I put more in it and did not come back on. Me and my then 10 month old were picking my 14 year old up from school and I noticed smoke pouring out of the hood. There was no warning lights or anything. Then the air conditioner started to blow smoke out as well. I cut the car off and it continued to smoke for approximately an hour. The car was about to catch on fire with no warning lights and the hazardous smoke out of the vents. The problem was diagnosed by dan’s auto center. I can not move my car because it will smoke at the engine and cause a fire risk. The low coolant sensor came on a few days after purchased. I took it to get it diagnosed and the cost from that place quoted approximately 3,000 dollars. I put coolant in it and did not drive it for awhile. The sensor went off and the coolant was still full. There were no signs, no sensor, no overheating, just all the sudden huge clouds of smoke coming from my hood of the car. BMW has a lot of recalls for this same situation, but my car (year) is not listed. I do not understand this. Please add my car to the list, this is a 2000 to 3000 job and I have to get my car towed to a place if I ever can. Can I take this to a BMW place and ask them to fix due to other recalls? this was very scary for me and my children. “the egr cooler may leak internally, causing coolant to mix with diesel engine soot, which could result in smoldering particles, a melting intake manifold, and potentially fire,”according to BMW.

The dealer performed the egr cooler recall in Feb 2023, a month later and the part failed again. BMW should be required to issue a lifetime warranty on these defective parts that have now been recalled twice.
There is an open recall on BMW X5d and other BMW diesel models due to a fire hazard, the recall warns of an egr code warning on the vehicle. My 2013 BMW X5d 3. 5 has that warning code, however BMW claims that there isn’t a recall on it. My VIN is 5uxzw0c57d0b95714, and for the last 5 or 6 years I was told by the guy who was my rep at the dealership there was a possible recall, but BMW was having issues keeping up with demand for the parts. Now I have this warning, the dealership is denying the warranty. Yet I’m still at risk.

I have a recall notice for an egr cooler in my 2015 BMW X5 diesel. At first there was no part available, for at least a year. Now a part has been available since September 2022. I sold the vehicle to my son in roanoke, va in September 2022. His dealer claims he can't get the part. This is a safety issue. My original dealer in California had the part, but is telling my son he no longer has a part and in order to get a part from the warehouse, my son's roanoke dealer has to be part of the penske auto system. The roanoke, va dealer was sold around September 2022 and has been totally inept, can't get the part, made some other repair which was incorrect and now my son is driving a safety defective vehicle. This may not be the proper place to make a report, however the recall notice says to make a report, gives a website and says I can get information at the website, but not true. Additionally, the printed phone number does not work.
There was a recall on my 2013 BMW in January 2022. In the recall letter it was mentioned that the they would notify me when the recall repairs were available. I called my local BMW service center in July 2022 to ask if the part was available. It was stated that the part was not available. The representative stated what was in the recall letter, which was. "this time. We will notify you with a follow-up letter as soon as we are able to perform this safety recall. What could happen? the engine’s exhaust gas recirculation (egr) cooler could develop an internal leak. Cooling fluid could mix with typical diesel engine soot deposits. With high temperatures normally present in the egr module, this might result in smoldering particles. In some cases, these particles could contact the engine intake manifold and create small holes due to melting. If this occurs, it would increase the risk of a fire. Your vehicle may be experiencing this issue if one or more of the following occurs; a reduction in engine power, a warning symbol indicating a loss of engine coolant, an unpleasant odor (e. G. , exhaust) and/or an unusual noise from the engine. If this occurs, carefully move away from traffic and pull over to a safe location as soon as possible. All occupants should carefully exit the vehicle and move to a safe location away from traffic. Do not continue to drive the vehicle. Sample if you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers and passengers of this important information. " my daughter was driving the car an almost home when she started to smell burning and minutes later saw smoke and flames. She got out of the call and called 911. The care was a total loss, due to this recall and BMW is taking no responsibility for the loss. She is still recovering from the incident and I would like to take action against BMW. I have the police and fire department report from the town of milton.

The contact owns a 2013 BMW X5. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed with selective catalytic reduction (scr) passive reservoir failure. The scr passive reservoir was replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and diagnosed with egr module failure. The contact was informed that the egr module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was 104,370.
Important safety recall issued, rcall campaign no 21v-907: egr cooler. BMW. Since the recall the engine is producing a weird noise, indicated as one of the effects, and the car has had so far two repairs performed in February and March, most probably as effects of this recall: diesel transfer pump had to be replaced and diesel particular sensor. Remedy is unavailable and BMW is not giving any solution so far, while I am incurring in high repair costs and the unavailability of my vehicle.
The egr cooler has gone bad and I have been driving around with carbon monoxide in my car causing extreme headaches and nausea. I did not know that was the problem and it took 2 visits to the dealer to figure it out. The egr cooler was dirty and blocked before we purchased the vehicle and there have been a couple other indicators that this was an issue. Also the car did not have an engine light on to show there were any issues. I could have passed out if I wasn't driving with the windows open for the last couple months! I took to an other mechanic before taking it to the dealer which told me to take to the dealer because they thought there was a major issue. There may be other issues with the manifold that haven't been exposed yet either. There are other vehicles made during this time that had a recall but not my 2013 X5 d35! there are many others out on sites complaining of the same issues. Seems like this make and year got missed and could have caused major health issues and/or death!.

Cel light came on. The decoded code is p2457. The egr module needs to be replaced as per the technician.
Engine failed because the crankshaft got so hot it fused the crankshaft and the bearings causing the complete failure and replacement of the engine. BMW has had numerous claims of engine failures in the X5 but they will not do anything to repair the vehicle. The engine only had 84k miles and then without warning, no oil leaks, no hot engine red lights, nothing at all to speak of in the middle of travel, the engine completely shut off and I have to do everything to get to the shoulder of the road. The BMW dealership in bay shore NY had the vehicle for three weeks and really didn't open the engine up to find the cause. After Bmwusa said they would do nothing to resolve their latent defect in the engine obviously metal parts which we came to the conclusion were inferior, I had the engine taken out by a certified trained a mechanic. He stated he has never see a meltdown of parts which welded together from the extreme heat of the engine. No leak were detected for either coolant or oil yet the engine seized simply for the fact, the metal used internally is inferior. For the price you paid for the "ultimate driving machine", Bmwusa needs to step up and be honest above the problems that have plagued their engines and their cooling system. I have spend over $15,000 to get this vehicle repaired and Bmwusa should reimburse me because of it's known history. I have owned Bmws since 1992 and the vehicles lasted passed 175k miles. To have a major engine fail at 84k speaks volumes to the lack of integrity for the engine. BMW is using steel and metal that have significant strength problems as documented by all the complaints I have read above. To have the engine seized like this is the middle of traffic endangered me and my passengers and totally unconscionable.
Cracked egr cooler. Mechanic said he has noticed this is becoming a pattern.

Tl-the contact owns a 2011 BMW X5. The contact stated that the check engine light illumunated. The vehicle would roughly turn off and had a sound of the engine still running when the vehicle was turned off and parked. The dealer checkered flag BMW 5225 virginia beach blvd, virginia beach, va 23462 (866) 414-7820 stated that the extended warranty did not cover the issue. The egr cooler that cools the exhaust fumes was diagnosed as the issue and needed to be replaced and there were no recalls. The manufacturer had not been contacted yet. The failure mileage was 81. 719. Tf.
My vehicle has a faulty injector, shortly after got another recommendation to fix the exhaust gas nox sensor, this all happened within the recall I received for engine, engine cooling : exhaust system: emission control: gas recirculation valve ( egr valve ) did this trigger new problems for my car? it seems like the whole system is failing for a car that is only 4yrs old.
Egr cooler issue/leak and spring detachment.
Egr valve is faulty causing emissions issues and can lead to overheating. Recalls have been performed on 2009 - 2011 models and 2013 models and newer but not on the 2012 with the same issue.
I have 2012 BMW X5 35d, transmission light came on , BMW dealer said the egr cooler needed to be replaced. Cost $1800 = too fix. BMW did a recall on the 2013 to 2017 models. My point is why wasn't the all 35d's included? all have the same erg cooler! BMW and NHTSA should revise this recall. Did it for nos sensors. Do the right thing, just makes sense.
Tl- the contact owns a 2013 BMW X5 xdrive35i us. The contact stated that while driving low speed they heard a loud abnormal noise coming from underneath the hood. No warning lights illuminated. The contact pulled over and had the vehicle towed to bluegrass BMW 3235 park Ave, paducah, ky 42001 (270) 444-0660. They diagnosed and stated to repair the hole in the engine and the drive shaft. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 56,000. Nd.
Experience glycol-leakage from the egr (exhaust-gas-recirculation) valve can occur. In combination with typical soot deposits and the high temperatures normally present in the egr module this might result in smoldering particles. This could lead to the melting of the intake manifold and in extremely rare cases result in a fire. BMW extended a recall to european and asian models but not the us my car has only 51000 miles. . Tl the contact owns a 2012 BMW X5. While driving approximately 45 mph, the check engine and egr system indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to BMW of kansas city (816-895-6228, located at 1200 w 104th st, kansas city, mo 64114) where it was stated that there was no recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
"check engine" light came on while driving. I opened vehicle settings from the menu to determine what the light was for. All systems indicated ok. Nearest serviceman checked for codes: code 4873, egr system. Online, egr recalls in us and europe, however my vehicle does not show up as part of any of them. Called BMW and they say I am on my own. I am concerned that I may have the same issue that involves the exhaust gas recirculation module with an integrated cooler. . Read more...
Egr cooler failure. Egr cooler developed, both an exhaust gas leak and control spring failure. Failure was seen in engine control light and later diagnosed in second trip to BMW dealer. Exhaust gas leak in engine compartment to grease air system is primary issue.
I am having an exhaust leak into my cabin. I already replaced the egr cooler and it went away, but now the smell is back.
I bought my 2009 BMW X5 vehicle in June 2018, with approximately 61,630 miles and a limited warranty with power train coverage, which included engine, transmission, front wheel drive, and rear wheel drive. In mid-October 2018, my vehicle began showing the low coolant level light and low oil level light. I called the flow BMW dealership for service and took my vehicle in for service on 10/19/18. Flow BMW diagnosed a leak in the radiator. After contacting the warranty company (assure) the warranty company informed the service manager that they would not cover the cost of a new radiator ($1,300. 00) because it was not covered by the limited warranty under power train coverage. The radiator is one of the engine's unsung heroes. It's responsible for essential heat exchange functions in your car's cooling system. The normal operating temperature of the average car engine is around 190-210 degrees fahrenheit. With a defective radiator, the increased heat starts to wear on other engine components, and the resulting stress can shorten engine life dramatically. The coolant system is absolutely critical to keeping the engine running. This is a danger to the driver and to others on the road. The radiator issue and inevitable issue with the engine can cause serious injury to other drivers on the road if the vehicle's engine seizes are stops in the middle of traffic. After some research, I learned that other BMW customers have complained about the radiators in Bmws from the years 2007-2013 (documents attached). Again, the radiator is a vital part of ensuring that the engine runs appropriately, and if there is evidence of consistent leaking with BMW vehicles with very few miles due to a manufacturing error, then this problem should be corrected. Please see attached documentation for more information.
Exhaust gas recirculation (egr) cooler recall (recall campaign number 18v-755); recall came out in oct 2018; was first notified by BMW the end of Dec 2018; as 0f 6jan19, no remedy for a potential fiery time bomb. I emailed both the gm and service manager (ron [xxx] & steve [xxx]) 3jan19, at BMW silver spring, where I purchased the vehicle new, and have it serviced annually, expressing my worry and urgently inquiring when I could get the remedy repair in place. I have not heard a response. The car is like new with less than six thousand miles on it. I spent close to $75k new and should not have to be nervous driving it and it seems to me that 4 months is too long for a remedy. How can I get the remedy in place quickly or expect a new replacement? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
