36 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

I am smelling extremely dangerous for health exhaust fumes inside the car while driving. The more the cabin heat is applied, the more exhaust smell is noticeable. I found many forums online related to the same issue on 2009 and up diesel powered BMW X5 xdrive35d. People are complaining about faulty egr coolers, leaking turbos etc. This problem needs to be addressed and corrected. Thank you.

38 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/16/2017

During hard acceleration of the car while getting on the free way ramp, the car went into limp mode. The engine performance was degraded and I had to pull on the side of the road to restart the car. The car was taken to BMW of bellevue next week after initial diagnosis of a dme internal fault by a signature independent kirkland. BMW of bellevue replaced air mass filter and oil filler cap. A few weeks later the issue happening again during regular driving on the freeway. BMW of bellevue diagnosed this as a vacuum hose leak. A few weeks later the car went into limp mode again while getting on the freeway, BMW of bellevue diagnosed this as a high pressure fuel sensor short, BMW of north America opened a puma case, but did not recommend replacing the dme yet. Right after picking up the car I hit the issue again where the car went into limp mode while accelerating on the freeway ramp. BMW of bellevue worked with BMW of na to replace the dme which is covered under warranty. Before handing the car back the service advisor did a test and was able to still reproduce the car going into limp mode getting on the freeway, diagnosis is still not known. It has been 3 months today since the issue first happened and the car has been out of use for more than a month and there is still no conclusion on the root cause.

40 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/30/2017

My vehicle is having engine light and stron fuel smell. I took vechie to BMW service center and been told that car has egr coolant problem. According to service center that repair for recall #11e-a03 for egr valve was perfomed in 2016 which I not been told. Now I am getting egr coolant issue and BMW is recognized that this is related to egr system related issue. It is common compliant among vehicle owners but BMW is not accepting that this manufacturing fault and may cause some terrible outcome if vehicle stopped while driving on the freeway. I am requesting NHTSA to demand BMW to recognize this issue and fix it as recall or under warranty.

41 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/24/2017

I purchased car 2011-sole owner dealer state replaces engine pulley bolt 2012? driving in dark and rain in mountains nc 1/24/17. All of a sudden lost ability to steer without a lot of force. Then got dash errors "charging malfunction", "engine overheating" transmission failure "no abs" "drive cautiously ""turn off engine". I could not turn steering wheel hard enough to get off road. Pulled barely to side and turned engine off. Completely stranded and scared to death. Same broken bolt to be replaced. This is lethal situation and I am stuck with a killer car. Cannot afford to dump it. This car has required towing several times for engine failure that was "repaired". But I don't know what was done. In prior separate incident I was driving along engine light came on car sputtered and stopped-required towing. And takata recall also still waiting for airbags shoot shards. BMW will not replace. They think it is not hot in nc. I call 104 degrees hot.

42 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2012 BMW X5

Failure Date: 11/10/2016

The egr cooler was discovered to be leaking harmful exhaust underneath the vehicle. This harmful exhaust could eventually be breathed in while the engine is running and the vehicle remains parked to run the air conditioner. Based on the mileage of my vehicle which is at 75,000 miles, the part is not covered under the emissions warranty. The odd part here is that my vehicle received a full inspection at 60,000 miles and there was no sign of any exhaust leak at this time. All that the vehicle is used for is to get groceries and bring the kids back and forth to school. Right now I am in a bad position where the cost to replace the egr cooler is nearly $2,000. If an inspection was performed just prior to 70,000 miles then this part would have been covered under the emissions warranty because I live in California.

43 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2012 BMW X5

Failure Date: 11/08/2015

Engine malfunction, reduced power, error mesage this morning. Just had to have egr replaced 5 days ago (@52,000 miles) at the tune of $1005. 00. . . . Now my car will only go 35 mph. Car started making a "whistling sound" on 11/07 during acceleration. . . . Then today, it started "rattling" them engine malfunction message came on and power went away!.

44 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/23/2014

Exhaust is entering the cabin through the venting filling the car with harmful gases. I brought it to the dealer and they diagnosed it as a egr cooler/valve issue. There is currently an "open campaign" for the erg bracket to be replaced by BMW but no safety recalls on the egr cooler or valve. I am concerned about the safety of this issue since the leak starts off slow and undetectable at first then grows to be a serious burn in your eyes and nose. This could be especially harmful to families with young children.

45 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/02/2013

I was told by BMW that it was the egr high pressure heater leaking, wherein the leak causes diesel exhaust fumes to enter the cabin while driving without warning. I observed this mostly as I pull back from my garage, when idling and randomly as I drive. I've noticed a strong noxious smell in the cabin, which gave me nausea and headache. I remedied it by venting the cabin then recirculating the air. It happens constantly except when I circulate the air in the cabin regardless of when I'm in the road or parked in front of my garage. (I figured this prevents the fumes from the hood entering the cabin). I am finally having it repaired for $800 maybe more as I will find out tomorrow the final cost. I've read in the forums that this is not uncommon even below 15k mileage X5s which is virtually new and has occurred in different vehicle mileages. This is potentially dangerous and a health hazard to drivers and infants. BMW should be shouldering this unacceptable hardware failure!.

46 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/19/2013

I was driving my X5, 90 minutes from home, when I noticed my steering was unusually stiff. It was 5 degrees outside, so I assumed it might have been too cold. I was able to move over to the right lane, and turn onto the nearest side street. At that point I got a code saying "battery discharge". I assumed it had something to do with the keyless ignition, so I shut it off and tried to turn it back on. It didn't work, and it gave me the same warning again. In addition, the onboard system was giving messages of each of the systems that was shutting down, ultimately, with everything shutting off, including the emergency lights. I had to have the car towed. After the dealership looked at the car the next day, they told me this was part of a recall for the idler pulley bolt. I looked this up, and discovered the letter dated Nov. 26th describing this recall from BMW to NHTSA. We started the purchasing process of this vehicle on Nov. 26th, ultimately purchasing it on Nov. 30th. The carfax did not show this recall repair when we purchased it. My dealership is claiming they repaired it that week, before we picked it up, (again, no mention of a repair). My concern is this: if it was repaired in November, this repair failed. If they ignored this recall and sold me the car, that would be negligent. Furthermore, we had the car into the dealership in January 2013 for a tire issue. If they had not done the repair in November, certainly they were responsible to repair it then. Obviously they didn't. Now, the car completely fails, and is in the shop. This repair took 3 days! I am unsure of the safely, as well as this failure being just a pulley bolt. I am aware of the most recent recall of Feb. 19th, for electrical problems, but at this time, doesn't include the X5? the pulley bolt problem doesn't seem to fully describe the loss of steering and power I experienced.

47 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/21/2013

2010 BMW X5 3. 5 diesel was brought in for service to diagnose exhaust smell in the cabin. Diagnostics unveiled a cracked egr cooler that allowed raw exhaust fumes to enter the cabin, potentially resulting in carbon monoxide poisoning to driver and passengers.

48 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/11/2012

While driving my truck on a very cold day (0 degrees) in chicago, white smoke began emitting from the exhaust and the truck totally stopped running in the middle of heavy traffic. It would not restart and it had to be towed. It was determined that the cranckcase breather box/oil separator stopped working causing oil to spew everywhere within my exhaust. This also ruined my spark plugs. This is a well documented defect in the X5, and there should be a recall related to this. It seems to occur as soon as the manufacturer or extended warranty expires and it is related to cold weather.

49 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/15/2011

The temperature was about 5 degrees f. After driving a short distance, there was a large amount of smoke from tailpipes and smoke from engine compartment. Engine oil warning message and ses light illuminated. The engine hesitated and misfired. After stopping, the back of the X5 was covered in oil. The engine compartment was covered in oil and oil coated the exhaust manifold. The X5 had to be towed to the dealer. The dealer indicated the ccv was frozen and it was common in these cars. When the ccv freezes, it can suck the oil from the oil sump through the ccv into the intake manifold. The valve cover gasket usually blows from the increased pressure. If enough oil is sucked in through the intake manifold, it can hydrolock the engine, breaking piston rods, etc or the engine can seize from lack of oil. BMW is aware of this design flaw in these cars when operated in cold climates and is providing some relief for some of the cars that experience this issue. The valve cover gasket was replaced. Oil had to be vacuumed from the spark plug wells. The ccv and associated hoses were replaced with a newer insulated design. The dipstick tube was replaced. The oil filter was replaced. Any oil that may remain is drained and new oil was added. The engine compartment was degreased.

50 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/10/2011

1. The weather outside was -10 degrees celcius. 2. I own a 2003 BMW X5, 4. 4 litre engine, v8. The crank case valve froze shut, causing oil to spill into the engine. This problem has occurred twice - once last winter (2010) and this winter (2011). It has cost me a total of $1,600 this year and $3,000 last year to repair. 3. Spark plugs needed to be replaced, engined needs to be cleaned, and a new heater blanket was installed last year, but failed to keep the valve from freezing shut again this year!.

51 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Catalytic converter and nox sensors were not replaced at this time, but should have been. April 2014 catalytic converter needs to be replaced now. Nox sensors are not failing, but need to be replaced because they are underperforming. Not covered under warranty, even though they were replaced once.

52 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/19/2010

Oil separator froze causing high pressure and blown seals. Initial cost about $1100 to repair. Dealer states this "happens all the time" to X5's in cold weather. Temp was in the single digits. In January 2013 oil separator froze two more times;however, this time damaging the engine - cost over $5000 to repair - basically totaling the car. With about 15 minutes of research, this appears to be a common and known issue on BMW X5 3. 0, 4. 4 and 4. 8 engines from 2001 to 2008. . . Looks like the parts were redesigned in 2009. Looks like a simple preventive maintenance routine and insulated oil lines would have prevented the "catastrophic engine failure" and dangerous condition of tailpipe fire, or being stranded in zero degree weather (which seems to be a condition required for the failure). Owner of car is the original owner, with all maintenance being done at local BMW dealerships including major services at 60k and 90k so there appears there is no "preventive maintenance" included in either of these major service milestones for the known oil separator defect. A recall on this defect to install the small amount of parts to prevent "catastrophic engines failure" and dangerous conditions "being stranded in single digit weather" seems like a logical choice. . . Or at least changing major service milestones to add preventive maintenance so the probability of the failure can be reduced.

53 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2001 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/08/2009

The contact owns a 2001 BMW X5. While driving 55 mph in six degree weather, the vehicle suddenly began to lose power and the speed decreased. The contact pulled the vehicle over and noticed a lot of smoke coming out of the tail pipe. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the failure was caused by an oil valve separator issue. The mechanic explained that the engine froze and shot out all of the oil from the vehicle. The contact attempted to have the failure covered by her aftermarket warranty, but they refused because it was not an internal engine failure; therefore, the manufacturer would have to assume responsibility. The dealer stated that they would replace the oil valve separator. The vehicle has not been repaired. Through research, she learned that numerous people with the same vehicle have experienced the failure and, after the repair is performed, the failure persists. She believes that this is a manufacturer defect. The current and failure mileages were 94,500.

54 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/06/2004

I have a new BMW 3. 0 X5 with 3,500 miles and had my vehicle die and requiring towing to the dealer with a crank case valve freeze up draining oil all thru the engine and requiring a non original designed replacement valve that no serice tech feels with be reliable below 10 degrees above zero. I live in minnesota and this is not acceptable for a new vehicle in this weather. Now my vehicle is no longer reliable and it presents a safety issue because this could happen on the highway or any where. No guarantees of it not happening again. I purchased the vehicle from the dealer new only five months ago.
