Hydraulic Power Assist Steering System Problems of Buick Regal

Power steering fails when turning to the right. Unit operates correctly when turning to the right, however there in intermittent power assist to the left. The unit failed when turning in a parking lot to the left, there was a pop followed by a complete loss of power assist to the left. The fluid level in the power steering resivoir is normal, how a slight pressure was observed when the cap was removed.

2002 Buick Regal - purchased new 11/02. Power steering gear rack assembly failed 1/27/04 (19,030 miles) - gm replaced under warranty. 3/10/04 (19,943 miles). New part failed - gm replaced under warranty. 1/6/05 (34,388 miles)reported same "symptoms" to gm dealer - gm resealed power steering pump under warranty. 10/30/06 (57,650 miles) reported same "symptoms" - power steering pump seal replaced at my expense. 12/16/06 (58,892 miles) reported same "symptoms" - gm says new steering rack again needed - this is fourth rack for this same car, including original one!!!!! I also think the work 1/6/05 and 10/30/06 regarding power steering pump may have just masked the underlying rack problem. Obviously, gm has a part failure on this power steering rack. This certainly seems like it could be a safety issue, but gm does not care. I was referred to gm/Buick assistance 12/13/06. Assistance refuses to repair this defect. They have offered me a $200 "maintenance letter", but as of my conversation with assistance today, this letter is at least 4-6 weeks away from being received by me.

Almost caused accident, power steering pump and pressure hose replaced, problem not corrected. Steering to left is very difficult even after pump was replaced, as it was prior to pump being replaced.

While driving consumer heard a clanking noise. When trying to turn to the left vehicle continued to go straight. Consumer contacted the dealer, who thought it was the shaft, but was not completely certain. Also, dealership was guessing as to why this defect may occur. When consumer contacted the manufacturer he indicated that vehicle had too many miles and was out of warranty. They will not make any repairs.

My 1999 Buick Regal LS continues to demonstrate an occasional power steering failure. The failure occurs with a first start/cold start or after the vehicle has been sitting for a period of time after being operated. The problem is a lack of "power steering" when turning to the left, I. E. When pulling out of a parking space in a parking lot and a hard left turn is required. The situation is negated after the steering wheel is returned to a straight position or full right position. This occasional failure has been ongoing for more than 40,000 miles but has been more frequent with this winter's extreme cold weather. My vehicle currently has 99,000+ miles. The recent recall by gm of 1996-1998 Regals for this same problem has prompted my reporting of this failure with my vehicle.

I have a 1998 Buick Regal. In December the power steering went out, I was able to turn to the right and with great difficulty, able to turn to the left. The automoble has only 14343 miles on it and the VIN no. Is 2g4wb52kxw1580222. I would like to report this because if my wife was driving I feel there would have been a serious problem she being not as strong am me. I reported this to Buick and they told me there was a recall but my VIN no. Was not included. I feel that all 1998 Buicks should be recalle and checked. Thank you.

Consumer noticed while traveling and making a left hand turn that power steering locked up. Vehicle rolled after a stop and power steering locked up from then on. Hard steering and clunking noise on left turns.

On-off loss of power steering during turns. Sometimes a strange shake in steering wheel at low speed when first starting to drive.

After car warms up and when starting to move from full stop car will not turn to the left except with extreem force.

Steering wheel would not turn in left direction, and it was power steering. Extremely difficult to operate vehicle safely.

When driving at any speed and making a turn, tires felt like they were in water. Also power steering felt loose.
