1998 Buick Regal GS. Rack and pinion problems at 96k miles. Nothing noticable leading up to problem. One day it has hard to steer to the left. Now it is effecting turning to the right. Other '98 Regals were under recall for this issue but for some reason my Regal isn't. Spoke to Buick at 8666088080 and was told by a manager there was nothing they could do since it wasn't part of recall. Kept refering to car age even though the car has under 100k miles. Taking to Buick dealer this weekend to see if fixing is worth it. Dealer says full rack and pinion overhaul will run $1500 to $2000. Car is only worth $2500. Sad to see a car die before it hits 100k miles but I guess there is a reason gm was in such bad shape.
1997 Regal Buick recall no. 03v52700 was completed on vehicle on 3/18/04 (steering rack and pinion) vehicle had roughly 22,000. Same problem has occurred again with 54,733 miles. Vehicle driven around town. Can't drive have to have vehicle towed steering uncontrollable. Called gm will not replace. This is a very serious safety issue. Problem was just patched. Gm should have to replace because of safety issue. Someone could be injured possibly killed. My complaint is that gm should have to replace the steering rack and pinion. There was no accident but could have caused an accident.

I was leaving a parking lot when the power steering failed to assist when turning right, turning left was o k. I managed to get the car home, it was a short distance. This occurred on or about 8/2/07. On 8/13/07 I looked under the car with a mirror and was able to find a open cavity on the bottom of the steering unit. There was a shaft and nut in the cavity but could not discern a bearing. I looked on the internet for relevant information and found that a recall had been issued for this problem. I went to the local dealer and found out that the dealer had accomplished the recall on the vehicle. I came home and found the invoice for the recall, it indicates a date of July 27, 2004, a mileage of 58,373 and that the power steering gear lower bearing was replaced. The car now has 96,644 miles on it. I have an appointment with the dealer on 8/17/07 to ascertain what needs to be done to remedy the situation. No parts are available. Just thought you might like to know.
The contact owns a 1998 Buick Regal. In 2004, the contact received recall notice number 03v527000 (steering:rack and pinion). The vehicle had 48,721 miles at the time. She went to the dealer and had the recall repair performed. The power steering has failed again and she believes that it should not have failed so quickly. The current mileage was 72,000 and failure mileage was 71,000.
The contact owns 1996 Buick Regal. The contact stated that the check engine light illuminated during an oil change. After the oil change, the engine light illuminated again and the contact had the battery changed. She drove approximately one and a half miles, made a right turn, and attempted to make a left turn when the steering wheel locked. The failure occurred while driving 10 mph. The contact had to shift the vehicle in reverse in order to move the wheel. The contact referenced NHTSA recall # 03v527000 (steering:rack and pinion). The current mileage is 86,000 and failure mileage was 85,000.

The steering rack and pinion of the Buick Regal has been noted to fail in various models, years 1996-1998; however many vehicles (identified by VIN) are not subject to recall status. I believe that further investigation needs to be conducted, simply because some of the vehicles not listed are experiencing the same problem. The steering suddenly fails to the left, causing hazardous driving conditions for the driver.
1998 Regal power steering rack wont turn left. This is irresponsible of gm (Buick) to not step up and fix this problem. I was given this car this year with only 26000 miles on it. Within 2 months the steering gave out on the highway 600 miles from home. Buick had the same old story, your VIN doesn't fall within the recalls block of VIN's. This problem has nothing to do with VIN's or production dates. The casting on the housing of the steering gear is where the true manufacturing defect can be identified. The state dept of rehab was going to put hand controls in this car for me, but now I have a 1200$ repair bill I can't afford. This isn't right.
While making a turn, the steering in my 1996 Buick Regal became very stiff and would not return to neutral. It has only been two days now that this has happened, but it's dangerous, as it gives no warning. The turn almost put me into a tree! it happened today but I was more aware that it might happen and alert for it. My 1995 century had the same problem and it was that the steering rack gets tight in colder weather and after 75000 miles!.
: the contact stated while making left turns, the steering became hard. The vehicle was not inspected. There was a NHTSA recall, # 03v527000, regarding the rack and pinion. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN.
: the contact stated while driving 15 mph, the steering wheel would not turn left. The dealership determined the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. There was a NHTSA recall, #03v527000, concerning the rack and pinion. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN.
: the contact stated while driving at low speeds the vehicle was difficult to steer left and right. This occurred intermittently. The manufacturer was alerted. There is a NHTSA recall, # 03v527000, regarding the steering rack and pinion. The VIN was not included in the recall. Updated 7/25/2006 -.
Vehicle has difficulty turning to the left - as if the power steering has failed. When you press on the gas after making a left turn the car will jerk back to the right - this could result in a serious accident. There is a recall matching this information, however the inconsiderate person (william bloechel) said that this car is not covered by the recall and would not let me speak to anyone else at the company.
My wife is complaining of a hard left steer on her 1997 Buick Regal. The problem does not occur on each turn at this time, but could result in loss of steering. Buick's customer hot line is refusing to make the repair on her car. They claim that this car is not involved with the recall # 03062. Yet the recall shows this recall covers the Buick Regal model built between 08-01-96 through 07-31-97. This car was built in this time frame. This could cause my wife to have an accident with the potential of fatal injuries.
The contact owns a 2000 Buick Regal. While driving 35 mph, the contact had difficulty turning the steering wheel to the left. The failure occurred intermittently. The mechanic stated that the cause of failure was the cold weather. The failure became progressively worse in the winter. The mechanic stated that the rack and pinion failed on the driver side. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that there was a lean with the power steering short rack. As of July 6, 2007, the vehicle has not been repaired. The current mileage is 65,000 and failure mileage was 50,000. The consumer stated dealer refused to admit there was a defect but the vehicle was never inspected by the dealer. The consumer stated took the vehicle to another dealer to be repaired and the consumer has the original part. Updated 09/05/07.

Steering requiring more effort than normal and jerky when making left turns. Replaced power steering pump and flushed system, all new fluid. Problem still exists. Took it to a dealer because there is a recall for this exact problem. Buick recall campaign number: 03v527000 date: 2003-Dec-11 component: steering: rack and pinion the dealer said my VIN wasn't covered in the recall but they would be glad to check it & fix the problem if I paid for it. What gives? what good is a recall if the dealers don't honor it? I found numerous complaints on carstats. Com of the same problem with the dealers saying their VIN isn't covered under the recall.
A recall was issued regarding the rack and pinion steering on our 1996 Buick. The problem was supposedly fixed by the previous owner of the car. My 17 year old son was put in serious danger because the 'fix' did not correct the problem. Now Buick is telling us that they will not stand behind the obvious problem with their vehicle. The car will not turn to the left. Bucik reps are incompetent and rude.
I am the owner of a 1999 Buick Regal LS. I have 70,000 miles on my car. In December I noticed problems making sharp turn to the right. I would be backing out of drive ways or making 3-point turns and I would hear and feet a clink like something it stuck and then pushes through with pressure. On February 3, 2006 I drove my car as usual and there was a very strong resistance to turn to the left. The steering wheel would not make left turns without lots of force and stepping off the brake. I lose power steering assist only making left turns, the right turn is just fine. I would hear a pop when I would force the turn. I had the problem checked out right away and was said to be a steering rack and pinion problem. I did some research and found out that my same model was recalled for the exact problem in 96' 97' and 98 models, but not the 1999. I contacted gm for them to take responsibility and pay for this, but they will not!!! I was forced to take it to a gm dealership in tampa, FL to get this fixed, as the car was unable and not safe to drive at all. They installed a new rack and pinion and a tie rod, costing $1,000. 00 for the total work. I am upset with the fact gm is not taking responsibility for this problem when the same car 3 years before had the exact problem and I have found many many people with the same problem and the same year and model as my car and they had to pay for it themselves as well. I have a one year or 12,000 warranty on the rack and pinion and tie road. I had the work done on Friday, feburary 10, 2006.

: the contact stated the vehicle looses all power steering while turning the vehicle to the left. There is a NHTSA recall, # 03v527000 regarding the steering: rack and pinion. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN.
Rattle transmitted through the steering column at 22,000 miles. Dealer replaced lower steering shaft under warranty. Rattle came back at 57,000 miles and I needed the same part replaced again plus I needed a new rack. Car is not under warranty and I felt these parts should not fail at 57,000 miles, especially one of the parts for a second time. Cost to fix was $1400 of which gm picked up 40%.

I took car my car into a shop to have checked out, one of my complaints was that my steering appeared to be loose and not turning right when I turn left especially. Although this doesn't happen continuously it has become a big concern of mine. It sometimes feels like I don't have control over the steering wheel. The mechanic looked up and founded that a recalled had been placed on this make of auto. I contacted general motors immediately, only to be told that my car was not included in recalled. This problem is serious and I will like to know if there is anyway you can assist me.
I was driving on ac expressway when my steering failed. I could turn right but was blocked from turning left. After some time I could force the car to go left, but it forced the gear bearing to slip and now the steering wheel is 180 degrees upside down at straight ahead position. I have not had the car repaired yet. It is still inoperable. This Regal was made in canada in April of 1998, more than six months after the Buick Regal recall for this same problem. I am asking for an investigation from odi so that if all 1998 and 1999 Regals have this potential problem, that their owners be notified that steering may fail while driving. Only the 1998 Regal owners who had cars built from 1/1/97 to 10/15/97 have been notified so far. And with my vehicle being manufactured six months after the recall, it wasn't just built with an errant 'old' part, as g. M. Claims, but which can be refuted by all the other complaints since then. Owners must be informed, as the Regals were originally sold with the pitch that the cars could go 200,000 miles before wearing out due to the 'w' wheel base. And owners like myself may try to drive that far- not knowing that the steering fails at around 100,000 miles.
There was a clunking noise when the steering wheel was turned in any direction. It could be felt in the steering wheel and the brake pedal. It got progressively worse over time. I took it to the dealership and they said it had a faulty rack. It was replaced under the warranty and the noise is gone.

Over several weeks time I noticed that when vehicle was sitting still right turn required greater effort to turn steering wheel, as though wheel was against curb. Then noticed that I could "shake" tires if grasped at 3 and 9 oclock also could hear a sligth "clunk" took car to dealer and was told rack and pinion was defective, with vehicle on rack mechanic pierced rubber boot on rack and pinion assembly and fluid ran out, also tie rod end was loose.
The vehicle turns properly to the right, but when turning to the left, it feels as though there is no power steering. The vehicle is currently at dealership being repaired, and consumer was told it was a problem with rack and pinion. Vehicle is not part of the current recall.
While backing out of parking space, turned wheel to the left. Heard and felt "clunking" sound from engine compartment. Vehicle would no longer turn to the left, however turned ot the right without problem. Vehicle diagnosis was that rack & pinion steering gear failed. Repair cost of $750. 00. Consist of replace steering box, flush power steering system to remove debris, and re-align vehicle. Fortunately failure occured during low speed operation. If failure occured at normal highway speed, it may have resulted in severe injury. Safety dependant on the physical strength of the operator.
Consumer stated when turning the steering wheel in either direction power steering failed due to rack and pinion malfunctioning.
While driving at lower speed consumer heard a noise coming from the front end. Vehicle was taken to the dealership, and mechanic replaced the bushings, and greased the rack and pinion.

While driving consumer tried to turn left but was unable to do so. The steering wheel locked. And consumer was unable to turn left. However, consumer was able to turn right. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced.
Consumer received recall 03v527000 notice regarding rack and pinion failure. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for recall repairs. Dealer replaced the bearings on the steering column. Three weeks later, rack and pinion became defective and it was hard to steer. Vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who informed the consumer that a new rack and pinion was needed.
As the consumer attempted to make a left turn, the power steering did not respond. Later, the steering worked intermittently when a left turn was made. There were no problems when making right turns. Recall#03v527000. The entire steering system needed to be replaced.
While driving and turning to the left steering column failed. The vehicle would turn only to the right. Dealer replaced the rack and pinion shaft gear at consumer's expense.
After the dealership performed steering gear bearing recall 03v527000 repairs the steering wheel made a clicking noise . The noise occurred when making a sharp left or right turn and when in reverse.
Went to back out of parking spot at doctor's office car made a "banging" noise. The power steering would not work when turning to the left. It does work when turning to the right. I went to a transmission shop because I thought something. Happened in the transmission, causing the steering to bind when making a left turn. They told me that the rack was bad an not the transmission. I got on the web to find pricing for a new rack and found a web site that listed over 50 issues. With the rack for gm cars. I called gm and they are not willing to help. After reading the complaints from the web site I feel that someone needs to look at safety issues reguarding such an important part (steering) of the car.
