Have 1998 Buick Regal with symptoms identical to recent safety recall 03v527000 for steering defect. However, since car was built in Feb 1998 it appears to be out of the range of the gm recall (ends for cars built prior 10/97). Suggest recall be extended to recall cars with same symptoms that were built in months surrounding time frame since gm parts tracking not that exact.

Rack and pinion malfunctioned. As a result, steering failed without warning. No impact was reported.
Rack and pinion assembly was replaced less than a year ago due to complete failure of power steering. The rack and pinion began making noise and producing wheel vibration while turning and eventually developed a leak. Rack and pinion assembly was replaced at my expense for parts and labor. Unfortunately, car is begin to demonstrate early symptoms of it failing again. The symptoms are increased noise and vibration while turn at slow speeds or tight turns at moderate speeds. I am not looking forward to replacing this again. I note that many other complaints exist on the list for similar items, and that similar issue exist for other gm vehicles. Please provide information on actions being taken on the behalf of the consumers of this vehicle.

The rack and pinion steering went out in November of 2003 and was replaced by day motors. A couple of weeks after the repair we say on tv and in the news paper there was a recall on this vehicle for this repair. Day motors said they did not know anything about this recall. After several months, they responded and said that our vehicle VIN # was not on the recall list. I fail to see how this could be, as the defect stated on the kelly blue book information describes this same problem I had with the rack and pinion steering. Had I not caught this problem in time, this could have caused a serious accident.
I noticed that I was having problems steering while turning left and right - very stiff and hard to manipulate steering wheel while at low speeds. I checked to make sure that the fluids were all level etc. And the tires were properly inflated. I continued several weeks later and again the power steering fluid was low (3rd week of Dec 2003 & 2nd week of Jan 2004). I planned on taking the car in for maintenance when I received the recall notice during the 3rd week of Feb 2004. I took the car into signal hill Buick in California for the recall repairs. I was met with the rudest service possible, I was unable to get a ride home, the technician I spoke to initially would not even tell me what could be the problem with my steering other than they would look at it and correct the problem. It was never noted that steering system was damaged and needed to be serviced. When I took the car to hooman Buick in culver city, CA, they told me that the system was damaged and needs to be replaced in its entirety.
While pulling into a parking space, the steering wheel did not turn left. The vehicle gave no indication that anything was wrong it had gone out at once. The rack and pinion was repaired. The consumer requested assistance for the repairs.
Problems with rack and pinion caused the steering on vehicle to become hard while turning.
97 Buick Regal--locked up steering--sitting in my garage--waiting to be repaired called cardealer est:1,000. To repair.
In the waterloo courier of 9/23/03 it was reported that the federal government is investigating a possible steering defect in gm vehicles. The problem described involved difficulty in steering when making left turns. This happened to me and my daughter (who was driving my car at the time) on Saturday, September 13, in cedar falls, iowa. We were able to drive the vehicle (1999 Buick Regal) back to waverly to jerry roling's dealership. On Monday, September 15, I was informed that the rack and pinion (sp?) had gone out and needed to be repaired. Because the gm dealership was going to charge approx. $400 more than my regular mechanic, I had the car transfered to garry's tire in waverly where the work was done. I picked up my car on Tuesday, September 16. I thought I should report this incident to you even though the 1999 Regal was not one of those listed in the article.
While driving 30 mph the consumer noticed that the steering wheel could not be turned to the left. Vehicle was able to make right turns. It was later determined that the rack and pinion failed. The dealer technician indicated that this was a common problem with these vehicle.
While driving rack and pinion steering locked without warning.
While making a left turn and without warning, the steering wheel locked up, the and vehicle would not turn at all. The driver drove the vehicle to dealership. The mechanic replaced the rack and pinion. (making left turns were very hard and stiff) the consumer avoided an accident by turning right. The rack and pinion was binding and was replaced.
The technician stated that the rack and pinion was not working properly which made it difficult to turn left. Nlm.
Power steering rack. Intermittent loss of power assist while turning to the left. Dealer diagnosed as bad power steering rack.
Symtons and complaint identical to NHTSA campanign #02v286000.
Steering seemed to lock at near full travel either direction on several occasions, but would "release" with a hard pull back toward center. Last incident, upon pull back, wife heard a "pop" and steering effort seemed markedly reduced. When inspecting, I found bottom pinion shaft cover in rack housing to be missing, but found it in driveway near where last lock up was. It had grease and lots of "shrapnel" , seemingly hard plastic, that was wiped off and cap put back into housing. Steering has not locked since, but feels vague and loose near end of travel either direction. Car only has 51k miles.
Severe clunking noise under hood when turning wheel. After taking car to various mechanics, it was a unanimous consenus the rack & pinion needed replacement.
C/s steering column sticking when turning. Found rack and pinion gear binding causing vehicle not to turn left. Replaced rack and pinion with shor gear and reset toe in to correct concern. Test drove to verify.
The rack and pinion steering gear assembly broke while in a parking lot. Vehicle could not be turned to the left. Normally at the time this occurred, I would have been on the freeway and most likely would have suffered a fatal crash. The dealer said there were no recalls. The factory denied any steering problems, recalls or repair assistance. Dealership mechanics said there has been problems with the rack and pinion steering. Drive trains and engines are warranted to 100,000 miles along with emissions systems. A part as essential to safety as the steering should not be failing especially at the age and mileage of this car. The owners manual makes a big deal out of the fact that tuneups, antifreeze, etc should last 100,000 miles. Isn't steering more important!! I feel that Buick should pay for this repair.
Steering rack locked up while driving rendering vehicle unstable while traveling aprox. 35 mph and creating a potentially lethal situition.
Steering rack locked up at 40,000-60,000 mi had it replaced and it seems to be starting again at 115,000 mi.
Clunking feel in steering as if loose component or excess freeplay somewhere. Original "rack" was replaced, and now 3000 miles later, the replacement rack is getting loose and causing the clunking. There's a service alert within general motors # 98-12, but clearly they haven't solved it, since replacement units soon redevelop the problem. Issue aside from the annoyance of clunking in the steering gear, is "when is something going to fall off and cause lack of steering"? incidentally, my wife recently purchased a '98 olds intrigue, and they just replaced her steering rack. Wonder how long it will last? feel free to contact me for more details.

There is currently a recall for this problem but dealers and Buick says it did not include my VIN no. Nhtsa no. Is 03v527000 mfg. No. Recall no. Is 03062. The complain and problem is within the steering of the car the rack and pinion when making a left hand turn of any sort the rack and pinion tries to pull the steering back to the right with a re-pronounced jerking , it feels like the car will not turn left, I have call several Buick dealers they said there was no recall. I have called Buick they said there was with the same exact symptoms I have, but the recall did not include my VIN. No. They said to take it to a Buick dlr. Have them check it , and if, and only if ,it is the same as the recall states the will only assist in the repair. And I have to pay for the dealer checking it . This is a serious problem and has to be repaired , I don't feel I have to pay for it when there is a lightening recall on the books for the problem. I need help , before some one gets hurt or killed.
There is a severe problem with the steering. We brought the vehicle to a garage and we were told that there is a recall on the vehicle to correct the rack and pinion steering. We called Buick and were told that the recall is VIN specific and that our VIN was not recalled. We were advised by Buick that it was just a coincidence that our vehicle was the same year, make and model as the recall and had the same problem and that we would have to pay one of their dealers to look at it.

Binding, racheting and vibration in steering. Replaced power steering pump twice and rack and pinion steering unit once. Vibration still present. Dealer says manufacturer is aware of problem, but no fix yet, after eight months. Yet.
Recall 03v527000 concerning steering gear bearings. Consumer read a newspaper article about the GMC power steering recall. The consumer had not received the notice, but called GMC to get authorization for recall repairs. Vehicle was making noises when starting and when turning, but GMC representative stated it may not be a problem with the steering. The consumer must pay $90. 00 for a diagnostic test.
