Steering Rack Problems of Buick Regal

The contact owns a 1997 Buick Regal. The contact stated that it was difficult to turn the steering wheel and requires a lot of effort. He feels it is a safety hazard because he is unable to steer properly. General motors stated that nothing could be done because his VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 03v527000 (steering:rack and pinion), even though the failures are identical. The gm recall number is 03062. The failure and current mileages were 128,281. Updated 02-14-08.

- the contact stated that while driving his 1998 Buick Regal hard time turning left, usually when driving at 40 mph or lower. The contact stated that he took his vehicle to dealership ,and was told that vehicle didn't qualify for recall 03v527000 due to VIN. The contact was told he needed to contact the manufacturer, when he did that the manufacturer told him to contact his local dealership to have the problem diagnosed. The contact went back to same dealership, and was told that it was the power steering and didn't charge him the diagnostic fee. The contact took the vehicle to his own mechanic and they installed two new power steering pumps. The repair still didn't resolve the failure. The contact didn't think that the dealership ran a diagnostic on vehicle before telling him that the power steering valves needed to replaced. The contact stated that his mechanic toldhim that the vehicle didn't need to have the pumps replaced, butthe contact thought it was best to have pumps replaced. The contact stated that he called the dealership back, and told them that he did have the pumps replaced, and they told him that maybe it may be his steering rack and pinion. The contact called the manufacturer back and told them of all the repairs, and asked them if they would repair rack and pinion. He was told that they would not do repairs because they exchanged he parts out for this vehicle manufactured. Ak.

Rack and pinion needed to be replaced. This vehicle had been recalled but not including my VIN.

Unable to make left turn with ease. Left turns are very hard and at times does not turn left at all. Steering wheel does not automatically return to center position. I was unable to make a complete left hand turn, which caused me to over turn and drive off the road.

The rack and pinion steering gear malfunctioned. The consumer took vehicle to the dealer to be repaired , but the consumer did not like that they were going to charge him for the repairs. . The vehicle was not under warranty and there were no recalls on this issue.

Left hand return went out, my car, a 1996 Buick Regal, has a bulletin # 03062 issued for this problem and a recall for this part, however on notifying the Buick dealership and the 800 # have been told that my VIN # isn't included. It is obvious that my car does have this problem and is the correct year.

I am the original owner of a 1999 Buick Regal GS (3. 8l super charged) with approx. 85,000 miles. On Jan. 12, 2006 I lost power assist when making a left hand turn. This failure only effected the power assist in a left hand turn; right was ok. I pulled into a parking spot after a short drive to work and noticed the steering got tight. I heard a 'pop' when I lost assist. After work I drove home with no assist to the left. The problem is only when the wheel is turned clockwise from straight on position. I haven't driven a non-power steering car in about 15 years but this seemed much worse (very difficult to steer). I checked for any type of leak or belt issue, but my initial thought is if that was the problem I would have the problem regardless of steering direction. I have since spoke to a dealer regarding the problem and they are confident a replacement of the steering rack and pinion is required. There is actually a safety recall for 1996-98 Buick Regals for this identical issue. This is a very serious problem that could result an accident.

Recall 03v527000 concerning steering gear bearings. Vehicle is having problems making left hand turns. When making a left turn the winding noise gets loud, and steering becomes very difficult. This vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN. . . . . . . Upon makin gleft hand turns steering fails intermittently. Needs steering rack to correct problem. Reviewed a recall notice. This vehicle has the same rack problem. Yetr this vehicle not included in the recall.

One owner car, well maintained and safely driven. 70000 miles. While driging car, steering locked up during left and right turns. Steering popped"out of position several times. Very hazardous to drive. Mechanic was a short distance away, however ty the time I got there, the steering wheel was positioned at the 4 o'clock position wihile drigin straight ahead. Mechanic stated the only other car that he had seen a rack fail on so early was a '97 Buick Regal. Understand there was a recall that eneded in 1998. Repair to replace rack, $800. Additional cost of $350 at dealer to fix airbag warning light. Dealer maintains incorrect repair to rack caused this problem in the steering wheel. Old part is not available. This was a serioius hazard!.

Steering system hard to turn when cold (in winter months) feeling of looseness in steering and road bumps transmitted into steering wheel and sometime brake pedal if braking. Repair shop claims that many late model gm products are having similar problems and advise that it may take steering rack replacement.

Had to replace the rack on the power steering system today due to steering difficulty and leakage. The vehicle only has 104k miles. Repair cost by a Buick dealership was approximately $1400. 00.

1999 Regal with 47,000 mile has developed a clanking noise from steering wheel when making left turn same problem now exist when making right or left turn. Delivery date on service id is 28 oct 98. Yet this model is not listed in lastest power steering recall - the description of my problem is duplicated in this latest recall.

When turning the steering wheel towards the left steering wheel locked. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealership for inspection and repair. The dealer determine that the short rack needed to be replaced.

My steering went out while trying to park my car, my car has 70000 mile and is well maintained. If this would have happened while I was driving on the highway I probably would be dead now. It was a expensive repair,and in my opinion this should have been a recall. I have a 1998 Buick Regal.
