On September 30, 2014, I was driving down the highway in my 2005 Cadillac Deville at the speed of 65 mph. I exit on to an exit ramp and stopped at a stop light. While at the light my brake pedal went to the floor. I tried pumping the breaks but the peddle kept going to the floor. I then realized I lost my breaks. The repair shop that repaired my brakes stated that the brake line going to the rear brakes rusted out in the middle of the car, which caused my brake failure. This repair cost me $572. 66 to run 2 new brake lines from the front of the car to the rear brakes. I was very lucky that the brakes failed while I was stopped and not trying to stop at 65 mph. I have an 84 chevy, a 98 Buick and a 2002 chevy and the only thing I ever did to the brakes was to replace them when they wore out. I am very interested in your explanation of why the brake line rusted out.
While traveling on the highway at 55mph traffic suddenly came to a stop. I had to make a panic stop at which time the brake system failed. The pedal sank to the floor, thankfully I pulled the shift lever to low and put the emergency brake on to keep from hitting the car in front of me. When I got home I jacked up the car to take a look at what was the problem and found the break lines completely rusted, and a rupture in the actual line. After researching this appears to be a problem with Cadillac brake lines(using cheap materials).

The contact owns a 1997 Cadillac Deville. While driving approximately 20 mph on normal road conditions, the contact heard a noise and there was a low power response when the brake pedal was depressed. There was also a decrease in the brake line pressure, which increased the stopping distance. The failure occurred intermittently. The anti-lock brake system and traction control warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel and remained lit until the engine was turned off. The vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer and is currently being repaired. The technician stated that the cause of the failure was related to the electronic brake control module. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 97v064000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock), although the failures were identical. The failure mileage was 157,800 and current mileage was 158,000. Updated 03/17/09

The contact owns a 1996 Cadillac Deville. The contact stated that the rubber part of the brake line split into two separate pieces while driving 35 mph. The brakes could not be used and the emergency brake and gears were applied to stop the vehicle from moving. General motors stated that someone would look into the failure at some point. The contact is a mechanic and stated that he has never seen this type of incident occur on a vehicle. He stated that the bracket that is attached to the strut is being stretched beyond its limit, which after time will eventually split. The failure mileage was 138,210 and current mileage was 138,449. Updated 09/10/08

The contact owns a 2001 Cadillac Deville. While driving 40 mph, the brake fluid indicator light illuminated. The brake pedal was soft when depressed and brake fluid was added. The contact had to pump the brake pedal in order to stop the vehicle. The dealer stated that the brake line that connected the master cylinder and edcm module was rubbing against the transmission, causing the line to wear and brake fluid to leak. The manufacturer stated that they could not be of assistance and advised the contact to call NHTSA. The current mileage was 78,915 and failure mileage was 78,300. Updated 01/11/08. The brake line was replaced. Updated.
The steel lines to the front of the wheels rusted through causing brake fluid to leak. As a result the vehicle had no brakes.
The right front brake hose had ruptured while being bled. The owner checked the left brake hose and it had same type of crack as the right front. Both hoses were replaced.

Complete loss of brakes due to chafing of brake lines against transmission housing.
This complaint is in regards to the failure of the brake system on a 1997 Cadillac. Whe the system failed the vehicle was unable to perform an emergency stop. There was no backup system under this condition. At a little less than 90,000 miles the brakes failed. There was no backup. When the pedal was depressed it would bleed down until it bottomed out. It was during the 2002 holiday season and I was unable to get the car serviced. I investigated the problem and found it to be a brake line in the left rear wheel well had a hole rubbed in it. It was obvious that this problem was the result of poor design and due to the point of failure caused the entire brake system to fail. I repaired the line with a splice. I called the Cadillac dealer in san antonio, TX and was told there was no service bulletin, however the service manager said that they had seen this problem in the past and referred me to customer service. Customer service said there were not any service bulletins related to this problem. I have photographs of the brake line area where the hole was created. If you are interested please let me know. The problem appears to have been the result of poor design in the routing of the rear brake line and I would suspect that the same problem would occur on like models. My interest in reporting this incident is to hopefully prevent accidents resulting from this failure occurring on another vehicle. Regards, david mason.
Brakes failed while going 10mph. When the brakes were applied trying to avoid an accident, brake line bursted from rusting. Dealer was notified.
Steel brake line rubed aganist frame at left rear behind wheel, causing a hole in the brake line, resulting in fluid leak.
Brake line ruptured due to it chafing against the frame, this caused vehicle to crash into another vehicle, an independent inspector verified that the steel braided brake lines were rubbing on the frame and wore through causing breake fluid loss, there were no injuries in accident.
