1 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2002 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 12/26/2014

Drove to milan, mi from ypsilanti, mi. To look in on sister in law who is incapacitated due to broken femur from fall. Brakes felt mushy as I slowed to enter her driveway. After entering the driveway at low speed I applied brakes and pedal went to floor. Tried pumping brakes with no result. Threw shifter into reverse to keep from plowing into sister in laws vehicle. If this had happened earlier on the busy road leading into town I would have surely had an accident. Found brake lines badly rusted and both lines leaking that run from master cylinder to antilock module mounted to frame under drivers area. It is ridiculous that these two safety sensitive lines are made of un protected steel as opposed to copper nickel and are run out of the protected under hood area to the high corrosion prone underbody to meet the inappropriately placed antilock module. Two years prior to my purchase of this truck gm heavily advertised the rust resistant galvanized panels they were using in their trucks. I have since found out that they quietly removed this rust protection. I have ordered new break lines to totally replace all metal lines on this, my last chevy truck. I can only wonder how many fatalities have resulted from this often referenced condition. The difficulty will be in ever proving the cause and affect (effect) of these accidents since they will be so devastating in nature, the driver will probably be killed and not be able to testify about the true cause and almost all gm trucks of this vintage (especially in the rust belt states) will have break lines so rusted that they will crumble in almost any accident. My experience shows that the unfortunate driver won't always have "some" breaking ability left on a line failure.

2 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 10/12/2014

Another 2004 Chevrolet silverado 1500 ext. Cab brake line rupture. The line broke under the cab by the drivers door, and this left me with absolutely no brakes. General motors claims there will still be limited braking force, not so! I was stopping at a crosswalk pedestrian crossing and I started to stop, reduced speed to about 10 mph and the brake pedal went right to the floor, there was no braking force left at all. I went through the cross walk and stopped with the parking brake down the street. I had to steer into the other lane to avoid the pedestrian and another car. I live in atlantic canada, similar climate to new england, I just though I would add my incident to your file as this issue needs to be address by gm, I am also informing transport canada, and gm canada. We all know brake lines corrode, but the braking system should have a redundancy, this is the issue with these vehicles the master cylinder does not work this way. We have annual safety inspections in new brunswick, canada and this was done at the gm dealership in March, 2014, the vehicle was also in the gm dealership in sept. , 2014 for an oil change and the brake line broke a few weeks later. I realize this is an american association, but a lot of canadian cars are on your roads, I am adding this incident to the failure list, the truck was built in texas. I crawled under the truck after this incident and the brake lines are all rusted out and need replacement before this truck is safe to be on the road. I am sure there all lots of these brakes lines ready to fail on these trucks.

3 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 07/03/2014

Dropped vehicle off at my mechanic's shop complaining about rubbing noise from driver's side front wheel (I told him it sounded like disc pad rubbing on rotor & was present even when the brake pedal was depressed. ) he took vehicle for test ride to duplicate & locate the noise. While on the highway test drive he applied the brakes & a brake line failed dumping fluid on highway. Upon inspection back at his shop he found all four brake lines rusted & in need of replacement. He replaced all brake lines from master cylinder to abs unit & from abs unit to all calipers. He also replenished brake fluid & bled the brake lines after the new brake lines were installed.

4 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2003 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 05/18/2014

I approached an intersection where my traffic light signal was red and I had sudden loss of braking in my 2003 silverado c1500, with no prior indication or warning lights. The brake pedal went very low and I could not stop my vehicle before entering the intersection. I steered to the right of two waiting cars in front of me and came to a stop in the intersection beyond the light. Fortunately there were no vehicles coming at that moment on the 4 lane highway crossroad so a crash was avoided. All of the brake and fuel lines were inspected after the incident and found to be heavily corroded (rusted), with the rear brake line leaking about 2 inches from where it exits the abs unit under the cab. The master cylinder fluid level was normal and there were never any previous leaks, warning lights, or problems like this and I am the original vehicle owner. The visible level of corrosion seems extreme on the brake and fuel lines on this vehicle. Had I been in an accident, I would be concerned that fuel lines could also leak and increase the likelihood of a fire due to their likewise poor condition due to extreme rust.

5 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2001 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 10/24/2013

As I was coming down a hill toward stopped traffic I applied my brakes. The brake started to slow the truck then went all the way to the floor. To avoid the stopped car in front of me I turned toward the shoulder of the right side of the road. I was able to navigate around the car and stay between the car and a drain runoff on the shoulder. I continued on the should still trying to stop I split between a telephone pole and a tree. I finally came to a stopped about 75ft after that. I got out to check under the truck at each tire. There was no fluid. I proceeded to open the hood and check the master cylinder. It was full. I went back under the driverside door and under the door hinges on the frame the was brake fluid all over.

6 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 09/26/2013

Applied brakes and had no braking at all luckily was able to coast into a parking lot with out incident. Had it towed to a repair shop where we learned all brake lines were rusted and needed to be replaced from master cylinder to abs module and from abs module to front and rear wheels. I live in wisconsin we salt roads, with all the safety regulations how can they use a cheap corrosive material on a very important vehicle part? I know they make s. S. Brake lines. I had just come off of a 65mph highway if they had failed then, I may not be writing this.

7 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 09/13/2013

I was driving home from an erran and when I slowed down to make a turn I noticed the brake pedal went down more than useall. I continued to travel home and when I stopped for an intersection the pedal went all the way to floor, but still stopped the vihicle so I carefully continued home and parked in my garage. When I came back out latter to have a look I noticed brake fluid all over the garage floor. I opened the hood and seen two brake lines all corroded and one had burst right nest to left front wheel under the master cylinder. I had the vehicle towed to a repair shop and they replaced two sections of brake lines and was told this was a common problem on siverado trucks, but no knon recalls.

8 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 12/21/2012

Leaving a parking lot, I attempted to brake at the stop sign. The brakes initially worked, then the pedal quickly went to the floor. I began pumping the brakes, but the vehicle rolled out into the street. I swerved to the right, and another vehicle coming from the left swerved left to avoid an accident. I backed into the parking lot and tested the brakes. Each time I applied the brakes, the brakes would engage a minimal amount, but the pedal would very quickly go to the floor. Without constant pumping, the brakes would not engage at all. Upon further investigation, I found the brake lines under the hood severely corroded, and a significant leak from a line directly below the master cylinder. My mechanic replaced all the brake lines except the two running to the back brakes. Contrary to what gm advertises, this brakeline rupture resulted in a complete failure of both front and rear brakes. In older systems, the front and rear brakes were operated from two completely separate hydraulic systems. I understand that newer braking systems use some type of metering valve between front and rear brakes. It is clear to me that this system does not work as expected. This is a significant issue, and I am fortunate that this did not result in a severe accident. Three factors prevented an accident. My slow speed, my ability to swerve to the right, the other drivers ability to swerve to the left. Without all three, a severe accident would have occurred.

9 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 12/18/2012

The truck's brakes unexpectedly failed while attempting to take an exit ramp from a major highway onto city streets. The brake lines from master cylinder to the rear and front brakes were all corroded with brake fluid gushing from the system with each pedal depression. This was a serious life-threatening event. We were traveling with our family in the truck at the highway speed of 65 mph when the incident occurred. If it had been daylight hours with more traffic, we could quite easily hit another vehicle as the truck's stopping capability became non-existent. We've paid more than $2000. 00 to have all the lines, hoses, bleeders, fittings replaced. Every piece of tubing was corroded. This should not have occurred in a vehicle with only 53k miles on it. Please investigate, and if reimbursement is possible we would appreciate it.

10 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2003 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 09/26/2012

Was attempting to back vehicle and camper trailer down inclined driveway when suddenly the brake pedal went completely to the floor and I had absolute minimum braking force. Was able to stop vehicle before it and trailer went over the hill, (an approximate 15 - 20 foot drop if it had occurred). Upon inspection I found brake fluid on the driveway. Upon further inspection I discovered that a brake line leading from the master cylinder to the abs controller was leaking. Upon further inspection I found that all the brake lines were severely corroded and ready to fail. I cannot believe how much rust is present on the brake lines and the fuel lines. This appears to be a major accident waiting to happen.

11 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2000 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 09/18/2012

On 9/18/12 I was traveling in rush hour traffic on rt 29n in columbia MD when traffic slowed and then stopped. I stepped on the brakes of my 2000 chevy silverado 1500. The vehicle slowed somewhat but then the brake pedal went to the floor and I couldn't stop. I rear ended an unmarked police vehicle at approx 20-25mph. My truck suffered frt bumper damage as well as the back window blowing out. The police car suffered rear bumper damage. The officer stated that he was ok from the crash. I also suffered not injuries. I was able to get the truck out of the traffic lanes and opened the hood to check the brake fluid. The master cylinder was empty. I had the truck towed to my local chevy dealer for inspection. My insurance company came out to inspect the damages. The auto adjuster stated that the brake lines had rusted through causing all the brake fluid to leave the system. My insurance company says the brake lines are a wear item and are not covered but the damage to the truck from the accident will be covered. Gm says that they will not cover the brake lines and that there is no recall on the lines. I am having the brake lines replaced with stainless steel brake lines to stop this from ever happening again at considerable cost to me. After reading up on the subject it appears gm knows about this problem but won't do anything about it. I could have killed/injured someone due to these faulty brake lines.

12 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2002 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

While backing my truck out of the garage I lost my brakes due to pedal going to floor and loosing brake fluid. I was able to get it to stop with emergency brake. Upon further investigation I noticed all brake lines that route on outside of frame between master cylinder and abs module were rusted badly and were wet with brake fluid.

13 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Chevrolet 1500

Failure Date: 04/06/2012

Owner was driving on a major highway when another vehicle pulled onto the highway from the shoulder. During the emergency stop the brakes began to fail, and completely failed at the conclusion of the stop, with the brake pedal going to the floor. Although there was no resulting accident, the potential for a serious accident was very prevalent. Upon inspection, brake fluid was found dripping from the frame rail just below the master cylinder and brake block area. The brake lines had rusted to the point of failure where the lines was mounted to the frame and held in place by plastic retaining clips. . On additional inspection, the other brake hardlines were found to be rusted as well. The only viable fix would seem to be a total replacement of the existing lines, to prevent concatenated failures.
