Chevrolet 1500 owners have reported 16 problems related to brakes failed (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
No warning!!!(soft brakes or dashboard lights), truck brakes completely failed in traffic! after stop light, in slow moving traffic. Silverado crashed into small car and then, that car into another. No injuries, minor damage. I loved this truck. I have a folder an inch thick on this vehicle's maintenance! never has it's service been ignored! chevy should be accountable for this catastrophic failure of brake system. I would never buy another. Extremely disappointed with the ridiculously cheap parts used. Made in USA, chevy tough!!!! what a bad joke!.

Brakes failed in driveway. Upon inspection I noticed that the lines were badly rusted and one of the two under the hood had ruptured. There was no warning and fortunately no one was injured as I was not driving on the highway at the time.

I purchased this vehicle new and have maintained it appropriately. Over the period I have own this vehicle, I have had to replace the parking brake system z(cable) twice because it broke. I thought it was from fair wear and tear until I reviewed the over 381 complaints about parking brake failure. I wish to be notified concerning any recall or reimbursement for repairs. My vehicle currently has 72,300 miles. The cable first broke around 35,000 miles.

Unwanted abs activation causing increased stopping distance during low speed brake applications. This is dangerous and will cause an accident when the brakes fail to stop the vehicle.
Luckily I was sitting still at a stop light. The peddle just dropped to the floor board. It wasn't until after several attempts to pump the brakes back up that a warning light even came on. Upon inspection the hard line supplying the rear brakes had rusted through and caused the brakes to fail. Also contrary to other reports I have heard the entire brake system failed, not just the rear brakes.

I took my truck from home in CT into nyc for a follow up doctor appt. And the lines blew out on the way in and we still had to get back to CT with brake failure; had to stop 3x for brake fluid, not fun lucky I made it home alive. I cannot believe gm has not recalled this problem. Gm should make this a priority and put lives ahead of profits. I had brake replacement expenses of over $1300. 00. I have owned more than 8 trucks (about 5 gm trucks and 3 chevy suvs from 1980 to now with my current 2001 silverado. With the exception of this vehicle (silverado), never had a problem the lines rusting out.
My wife was on an errand and when she got into the truck to come home the brake peddle was soft and went to the floor before she was able to stop. She was scared and tested the brakes and found there was some so came home slowly with a plan in her mind to hit something other than another car in the case the brakes failed completely. Had this happened on the road there may have been a crash.
Applying brakes for slow traffic the pedal went to the floor. Ran off the road to avoid hitting vehicle in front. Noted failure of rear brake steel line which was heavily rusted. No warnings prior to brake failure.
While driving, brakes failed. Total loss of brake fluid due to rusted metal lines. I was able to avoid hitting others by turning on to a side street and using the e-brake. If this had happened half a mile sooner it would have been a much different scenario.
2000 silverado 1500 long bed reg. Cab. Brake failure due to corosion. Lines completely rusted out. In 5min research, found hundreds w/same issue. Costs too much to fix, cant afford a new truck. What is the avg. Person supposed to do?gm id obviously aware of issue and how dangerous it is. Pedal lost while driving. No warning light for loss of system. Problem needs resolved or at least addressed.
For about 4 months we have been having a problem with this truck stopping at low speeds. It seems like the antilock brake kicks in, but the pavement is dry and the truck just keeps going, the brake pedal goes down and you pray that you will stop before you hit something or someone! after this happened to us 3 or 4 times we learned to be very cautious on the road and slowed way down before coming to a stop so we would be able to stop, just in case this were to occur. (it did not always happen, only when it felt like it) however, were always wondered what would happen if we had to stop all of a sudden for an emergency. Lucky that never happened. The last time my wife came in the driveway and came within inches of hitting our garage door, that was it! the truck has been parked for the past 2 months. We are afraid to drive it. About 1 1/2 weeks ago my wife typed in "2000 silverado brake problems" on the computer and we were amazed to pull up 59 pages of complaints from consumers with similar problems of 1999 to 2006 silverado and GMC sierra which are being investigated by your office already. That is when we put 2 and 2 together with the complaints of the brakelines rupturing upon quick heavy braking, as was in many complaints also, that may have been the reason that our son had the accident with this truck in sept. Of 2010. He was driving in very heavy traffic on the interstate in a construction zone, crawling along, when someone had pulled in front of him and he had to slam on his brake - his brakes failed because of the line bursting and he hit an expensive traffic info sign and did $4000 damage to our truck. He chose to go for the sign instead of into another vehicle and probably killing someone. Then we called our chevy. Dealer, $110 to diagnose, then gm and they refuse to help us until we take it in and pay for a diagnosis.
