Chevrolet Avalanche owners have reported 14 problems related to brake antilock wheel speed sensor (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Abs pump or speed sensor are damaged and not working on this truck. When my vehicle was turned off the abs pump kept running causing me to pull the fuse for the abs. Chevrolet is aware of this problem as I have been calling them trying to have them include my truck in the abs/speed sensor recall which is on other trucks like mine. Chevrolet continues only to recall these trucks which were manufactured in the "salt states" only. . Read more...

Two weeks ago driving 60mph on highway in snow engine light illuminates and lose total power. "reduce power mode" illuminated but engine shut off. We almost got rear ended by a tractor trailer on us 48 in wv. On side of road for 2 hrs in 20 degree weather waiting on aaa (no shoulder on hway) and motor starts. Take it to garage and get throttle position sensor (tps) code ans stabilitrak/abs code. We had accidentally hit the onstar button a minute before this and mechanic thought that was related so he cleared code and sent us on our way. For two weeks we were good andit happened again on highway in rain us 70east this weekend, again in middle of highway. This time car started after five minutes. Took car to dealer and they state the tps needs replacing and front wheel speed sensor broken. There is a gm service bulletin #11273b where gm acknowledges tps issue and covers replacement of tps for 2008-2011 vehicles. Also bulletin pip3089b for bad wiring to tps for 2003-2006 Avalanches. Gm denied my service despite the fact that a 2007 tps and throttle body are the same exact part number as the defective one. This is super dangerous and extremely frequent as there are 550 posts alone on edmunds as well as many reports to https://forums. Edmunds. Com/discussion/5759/GMC/yukon-denali/GMC-yukon-reduced-engine-power-message/p22. Please assist as they are not standing behind a defective and deadly product as the computer cuts total power right on highway. . .

When traveling at low speeds, >5mph, the abs activates and vehicle continues on to the point of entering traffic. This occurs frequently and without warning, at stop signs and even just pulling out of private driveway into traffic. My local mechanic ran a diagnostic test and indicated that a front speed sensor was at fault. After investigating numerous sites, I found that there was a recall issued for the exact problem on the '02 Avalanche as well as other similar chassis trucks from '99-'02. And these were included in a recall of over 1,353,700 trucks under the NHTSA campaign # 05v379000. The report stated to contact gm and request authorization for the recommended repair. When I did that, the representative stated that there were no open recalls according to the VIN. How does gm determine which VIN is affected? is the NHTSA monitoring gm's selection process? I've own the vehicle since 6/05, and the above recall was initiated 9/05, but I've never received any type of notice that my vehicle may or may not be affected and to bring it to a gm dealer for inspection. I've had one hub assembly replaced years ago at my own expense, (I was told I had a bad bearing but they had the replacement part only came assembled as the bearing, hub and sensor). The designer must also have been the supplier. It's good that there is the NHTSA to try and keep these manufacturers accountable for the safety of the cars they produce, but with more automation in the industry to cut costs, you now have 1 worker overseeing what it took 10 to do. More and more mistakes are bound to happen. Our safety is worth more then their corporate jets and lavish lifestyles.
There is a gm recall #05068c- product safety- front wheel speed sensor corrosion. The 2002 Avalanche is listed, but my 2003 is not. I live in indiana, one of the states listed in the recall. My 2003 Avalanche has this failure and should be covered by the recall.

I have had several issues with my 2003 chevorlet Avalanche z71 only 62,000 miles. My problems started around 8,000 miles with the rear brakes going bad. I have replaced the front and rear brakes four (4) times since I have owned it. The abs speed sensors have been replaced once and need replaced again. The speedometer is stuck at 120 mph, the u joints have been replaced and now the transmission has gone out. I feel that chevorlet should fix these problems under a warranty/recall.
My 2003 Avalanche has the same problem as stated in the recall for 2002 regarding the antilock coming on at low speeds when coming to a stop. Gm refuses to include our vehicle for repair even though they stated that no change has been made to the antilock speed sensor and/or hub assembly from the 2002 to 2003. If we have the same product in our 2003 Avalanche, then why does it not deserve to be included with recall and require gm to pay for repairs to correct the problem. Gm is ignoring the continued problem with later year vehicles and is not being responsible for it. Avalanche owners need to get together to complain to force them to do something about it.
I own a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. The abs activates almost at every stop, even on dry pavement. In researching this problem I have found that there are many complaints on-line for the same problem. I also found that there is a recall for this problem for earlier model years but not for 2004. It iseems apearent that the 2004 model year should be included. I have already paid a great deal of money to have the brakes, wheel bearings and speed sensors replaced. And the problem persists. I have to exercise extreme caution every time I stop for fear of rear ending the vehicle in front of me. Any help you can provide will certainly be appreciated by myself and all those affected.

2002 Avalanche 1500, abs would activate when coming to a slow stop. Dealer said it was probably the speed sensors, recall was already done so they wouldn't do it again. That is not right! I don't care how many times they have to fix it, if safety parts are failing, they need to replace them! long story short. . . I replaced the sensors, didn't work. I replaced the whole bearing/hub assembly which came with pre-installed sensors. Fixed!.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. The contact stated that the tailgate straps were rusty and beginning to fail. In addition, the abs speed sensor was slow at stopping the vehicle. The abs would pulse and the vehicle would take longer to stop. The steering wheel was loose and vibrated when driving over a bump. The shaft bushing is also failing in the steering wheel column. The manufacturer stated that there were no recalls for the failures; therefore, the contact would be responsible for the repairs. The failure mileage was 86,000. Updated 3/5/09 updated 03/10/09.
When I slow down at low rates of speed, occasionally the brakes began to pulsate as if in the abs mode. I was told that it was because of the corrosion on the abs speed sensors, located within the wheel bearing assembly, formed by road salt. This problem just appeared without warning or provocation. When operating the vehicle and low speeds, stopping distances are lengthen by 10 to 30 percent. There has been a recall on this type of vehicle for several years in other states. For some inexplicable reason, it does not pertain to wisconsin. Even after all of these years, the part to repair my truck remains on backorder. The dealer/manufacturer can only provide them if I purchased the whole bearing assembly which is quadruple the price of the part that I need. Of course, I feel that this is unfair and while I wait for the appropriate part to repair my truck, I am putting my safety, as well as others, in jeopardy (this is sad to say but I am not using prudent decision-making skills). I believe that it is fair to say that if there were not others in the area having this exact same problem, the part would not be on backorder throughout the dealerships in wisconsin. I believe that this matter should be look into and addressed and refunds given to those who have paid the enormous price of this repair simply because it is a known defect and because this defect is a safety hazards.
2002 chevy Avalanche 1500 4x4 z71 corrosion in the front wheel bearing hub contaminated the tone ring on the speed sensor causing the brakes not to work correctly. Lock up or not work at all very dangerous situation. I replaced the hud and it cured the problem appears that the moisture causing the corrosion got thru at the speed sensor plug. I see canada already has a recall on this why is the us taking so long to implement the recall. Does some one have to die for it to be an important safety issue.
- the contact called stating that he took 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 to the dealership on 09/29/05 for wheel inspection, at the time the vehicle's odometer read 59,289 miles. An inspection was done with invoice stating wheel sensor and inc. Cleaning was done. The contact stated that he felt that they didn't apply zinc/x to the sensor during inspection. The vehicle malfunctioned on 11/13/06 while he was pulling into the driveway and the vehicle didn't stop once the brakes were applied. The contact stated the vehicle damaged the garage door. The contact took the vehicle back to dealership on the next day, and was shown that the wheel speed sensor was not in its proper place and it was rusted. The dealership told the contact that the rear wheel brake dust covers were rusted and they needed to be repaired before they would fix the problem. Also, he was having brake problems. The contact stated that on several occasions he had to use emergency brakes to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that he did his own research on his vehicle and found a recall 05v379000 for 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche for the service brakes, hydraulic: anti-lock. The contact informed the dealership of this recall, and was told that they would not repair the recall until he replaced the wheel speed sensor. The dealer would not fix the wheel speed sensor issue, if the consumer didn't have the rear brake backing plate replaced at his expense. Updated 01/29/07.
Contact received a recall letter concerning a defect between front hub/bearing assembly and wheel speed sensor. He took the vehicle to dealership to have it repaired. Now, the dealership is saying that the vehicle has excessive play in the hub bearings which was causing the abs sensor to activate. He had no problems with vehicle prior to the recall repair. He has not contacted the manufacturer.
I am entering this in regards to your investigation pe05020. This is on an incorrect activation of the anti-lock brake system in chevy trucks 99-2002. I believe my vehicle has this defect and it may have contributed to two accidents. The defect is in the anti lock brake speed sensor and occurs due to corrosion. My family has a snow removal business so I frequently use the truck in bad weather. . Also I lived across the street from the ocean for a year so the truck was frequently exposed to salt spray. I would be happy to let you examine the truck if you would like. I have not gone to chevy to request repair yet. . Awaiting advice from my insurance company.
