1 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/22/2017

Was driving home and brakes failed. Massive holes in the lines, pedal down to the floor no brake warning light until it was too late. Thank god my wife and kids were not with me this time. Lucky I'm alive. I was not on a main highway. So far the cost is up to $2000. 00 to replace all the lines. Also now the master cylinder seems to be faulty. Another $400. 00. I have read way tooo many complaints about gm brake lines rusting out way too soon many with low mileage. Something has to be done about this in the form of compensation. Lives could be lost and some probably have.

2 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/08/2017

While braking for a red stop light the truck was stopping normally and was almost stopped when the brake pedal went nearly to the floor and braking action was severely affected causing a much delayed completion to the stop. When the brake pedal collapsed a chime came on and a brake failure light appeared on the dash panel. Luckily I was able to avoid hitting the car in front of me. I was able to drive the car slowly out of traffic going very slow and using the emergency brake. Upon initial inspection, brake fluid was observed leaking from somewhere under the truck. The truck was towed to a service garage where the initial diagnosis was a rusted out brake line.

3 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/27/2016

I lost the complete hydraulic braking system due to a line(s) burst due to rust. Thankfully I was just coming out of a parking lot so I was not going fast. My foot immediately went to the floor, the warning sound and indicator came on, but I had absolutely no brakes other than the emergency brake, which I used to pull over. It goes to the shop on Tuesday so I will know then the extent of the damage. Had I been going 30 or 40 and coming to a crowed intersection, someone surely would have been hurt, there would have been absolutely no way for me to stop in time. I had no pre-warning of an issue, no low fluid indications, no brake warning lights, just my foot going to the floor. Pretty scary.

4 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 03/26/2016

My 17 year old son was on the freeway and the brake pedal travelled all the way to the floor while attempting to stop. The service brake system light came on at the same time. Stopping distance was increased dramatically, by at least double. If there would have been a curve or car in front of him there would have been an accident. Parked the truck until it could be inspected and found a leak under driver side front door. All of the main brake pipes were rusted and fragile. Taking truck to dealership to have all brake pipes replaced with kit mentioned in (TSB) 13-05-22-001. I am very disappointed that gm is fighting a recall by sighting the fact that there are two different brake systems and it is not a safety issue. What if the rusted brake lines for both systems failed. At the very least it seems that having your stopping distance increase by almost double with out warning is a safety issue.

5 Brake Light On problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

The vehicle's abs and brake lights are on. I took the vehicle in for repair and a state inspection. The part to repair the abs and brake light are on national back order with no definite availability date. The truck is not usable because of the failed state inspection.

6 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/14/2014

At a stop light, with the brakes applied, a loss of pressure was felt. Letting off and reapplying the brakes lead to the break pedal traveling to the floor / front of driver cab. At the point there was no braking pressure felt and the truck began to travel at idle speed into the intersection. Two failed attempts at applying the brakes lead to the brake warning light going off, after the initial failure. Applying the parking brake yield similar / failed results. The truck was safely steered into a parking lot and put in park to bring the vehicle to a rest. The engine was turned off and let rest a period of 5 minutes and then turned on and brakes tested while in park. No break pressure was felt at the pedal. Brake fluid was observed under the drivers side front portion of the truck. No bystander injuries or property damage occurred. Aside from the driver, a fourteen month old was the only other occupant, neither sustained any injuries.

7 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 04/02/2014

When approaching a stop light changing to red, brakes were applied moderately hard and the pedal went to the floor with severely reduced braking resulting in a stopping distance about 1 car length longer than normal. No brake warning light during this incident. I continued another mile to my destination with reduced braking. When the warning light appeared, the leak in a corroded line on top of the frame on the left side of the engine was apparent. I drove the vehicle to a Chevrolet dealer about 1 more mile for repairs.

8 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 02/14/2014

Slowed rapidly for a vehicle that pulled out in front of me. Brakes worked fine until speed dropped to 15 mph. Then brake peddle went to the floor and brake light flashed and warning chime sounded. Limped vehicle to dealership at closing time. Awaiting estimate and cause.

9 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 12/09/2013

I was driving down the road with my wife and granddaughter when all the brakes ,I mean all the brakes went, and a service brake lights came on at the same time. I managed to drift to a stop, otherwise we would have hurt someone or been killed. No warning. I had to pay 1900 for the repair which we cannot afford since I am on disability. It still scares us.

10 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/08/2013

Wife driving home when approaching a stop sign she applied brakes. Vehicle continued through stop sign exposing my wife and 14 year old daughter to possible injury from cross traffic. Wife had to pull vehicle onto grassy median to get it to stop completely since (by her estimate) brakes barely worked at all (maybe 20%). The brake warning light only came on after I had the vehicle almost to the repair facility. There was no other warning or indication that anything was wrong with the brakes before they failed. I managed to get the truck to a repair facility after noting severe leakage from one of the rear brake lines and topping off the brake fluid reservoir. Waiting on confirmation from repair shop but it appears that all the brake lines are rusted to a great and will need to be replaced to ensure safety of vehicle operators. I am shocked and dismayed that the NHTSA has allowed this issue to go on without some type of notification from chevy or the NHTSA regarding this very serious safety issue. Why would Chevrolet build this truck with a stainless steel exhaust system yet use inferior meatl on the brake lines?.

11 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/28/2013

Was driving on street from store to home when I noticed brake light on dash came on and then parked in driveway. My son went to use the truck the next day and when he pulled out of driveway to street, could barely stop. Subsequently discovered brake fluid on driveway. Checked brakeline and it was rusted completely with a hole in it. Car has been laid up and not drive-able. Rusting through the brakeline should not happen. This should be repaired under a recall.

12 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 05/19/2013

2003 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle complete brake failure. The consumer stated while driving 70 mph, the brake light failure light illuminated. When the consumer applied the brake, there was no response. The consumer was able to pull over safely. The vehicle was towed to a certified Chevrolet dealer, where an inspection revealed, the brake failure was due to a break in one of the brake lines, and all of the brake lines were so deteriorated and rust encrusted, that all of the lines had to be replaced.

13 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

My brake line rusted and leaked. I now looked online a saw all of the gm vehicles that is affected by this. I am glad I wasnt driving, but somebody is going to be killed. I had no warning and no brake light, the line just started leaking, it is severely rusted.

14 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

I've noticed a need for increased stopping distance for several weeks then my brake light came on. I checked the brake fluid level and it was low so I filled it up. Two weeks later it came on again. Brought it to the dealer and they informed me that the brake line from the brake pump to the rear brakes was blown out and needed to be replaced. After the repair I visually inspected the other brake lines and they appear to be fairly well rusted and I would not be surprised if they are the next to fail. After reading reports of accidents as a result of brake line failures, my wife and I are growing extremely concerned for the safety and well being of our family, especially our two young children, as this vehicle is our primary means of transportation.

15 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 12/29/2012

This is second failure of brake line. No indication other than severe rust under vehicle. Loss of stiffness in pedal when attempt to brake down hill in snow/ice. Brake light came on , needed to use transmission to control speed. Vehicle did sustain damage when unable to control speed enough it crashed into a structure. This also caused damage to structure. No injuries because most people in vehicle were able to get out. This vehicle has had both wheel sensors fail and entire hub assembly fail. The brake line has failed at about 40,000 miles but was covered by warranty by manufacture. No injuries at that time because of experienced driver behind the wheel as well as this incident as reported.

16 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/19/2012

As I was about to park my Avalanche in the street in front of my home I pressed the brake pedal to come to a stop and the brake pedal was firm and then became soft and depressed quickly quite farther than normal. The Avalanche continued to roll and I had to pump the brakes to get it to come to a full stop. After getting out of the vehicle I inspected the underside of the vehicle and found a great deal of brake fluid on the under body and puddled on the ground. As I inspected the vehicle I found that the brake lines were heavily corroded and flaking off rusted material. The brake line failed because of weakened tubing caused by excessive corrosion. The brake light did not come on and there was no preliminary warning of brake failure. The failure of the brakes caused the vehicle to have an excessively longer distance to stop than normally would be acceptable. I frequently tow a 6,500 lb pull behind camper with my Avalanche and if this brake failure had occurred during towing and in traffic during a stop it most likely could have caused an accident.

17 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/21/2012

Im getting ready for a trip, from texas to ohio in sept. Pulling another vehicle. I decided to get the truck ready before such a long trip. It started fine, no signs of problems, I pushed on the brake before changing gears, and my pedal went to the floor. I could hear squirting and air. I knew I had a leak. I investigated the issue and found hydraulic fluid under the driver side seat. I found one of the lines had split above the ehcu unit, spitting fluid all over the under body. This line was severely rusted. The other lines have some surface rust but nothing like this line. It is no longer tubular looking and looks more like a wet stick with a lot of missing branches, and is much larger looking than the others. Also, I found a leak on a line that runs to the rear axle, on the driver side frame that was severely rusted like the one described above. Im pretty sure this is the line that is split, but its hard to tell, I cant find a diagram to help trace the lines. After investigating the issue, I rechecked my dash lights to see if an abs or a brake light, none are on. I have contacted dealers and brake mechanics for repair, and have to have it towed as there is not enough pressure in the line to stop the vehicle. The truck was purchased in ohio. I would have imagined that they would be coated or stainless since it is a salt belt state, and im not sure why only one line degraded like it did. . This is a 2002 Avalanche 1500 4wd with z71 off road package, it is expected to get dirty and wet. I believe better standards are in order to improve safety, and that there should, with this many people affected, definitely be a recall on the lines. Had it decided to hold up until my trip, this could have been very disastrous.

19 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 01/01/2012

Antilock brake lights came on. . . There was a recall for "salt" belt states, however, areas that get snow and roads are salted as well such as reno, nv, truckee, CA etc and other states that have silmilar conditions to those that were already included in the previous recall should have been included as well. . . . Same problem, similar conditions. Why would my area not be included as well??.

20 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/03/2011

Tl- the contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. While driving approximately 30 mph the brake warning light illuminated on the instrument panel and the brake pedal dropped to the floor board reducing the braking pressure. The contact stated the failure was constant and the brake pedal needs to be depressed to the floor in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostics. The vehicle was not repaired. There was an open investigation under NHTSA action number: ea11001 (service brakes, hydraulic service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings) that may be related to the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 76,000. Ds.

21 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/12/2010

Brakes failed on 7/12/10 almost rear ended car before came to stop by veering into left lane to avoid car stopped at red light. Repair shop replaced rusted brake line. Again, 6/9/11, went to brake for red light, brake pedal went to the floor and stopped just before rear ending car stopped at red light. Repair shop says rusted brake lines!.

22 Brake Light On problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/03/2010

A few weeks ago the abs and brake service light came on while driving at low speeds. It stayed on for one day and then it happened again a week later. It has gradually happened more frequently and more randomly as well. The shop has not found any structural problems and suggested that the abs module be changed. The problem is random within the same kind of drive. Sometimes, if I stop the truck and restart it, on the third attempt the abs light doesn't come up. There have been recalls for the 2002 models but not this year. I believe the problem still exists with other models.

23 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

25 Brake Light On problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/11/2009

I just picked up some mulch for around my house with my 8 year old son and I got home and I was backing up to unload the mulch and when I went to hit the brakes the pedal went to the floor and the brakes light came on, luckily I wasnt driving down the road when it happened. The mechanic said the brake line was rusted out, that shouldnt be happening on a 5 year old vehicle with only 39,000 miles on it. . It also happened a second time not long after that, I cant remember the exact date on that one either. There has been lot of problems with this vehicle : heating ,brakes sensor, wheel bearings, e brake problems, fuel pump rot, water pump, rusted under carriage, O2 sensor, multiple brake and rotor replacements [4], noise in steering column and front end, gauge cluster replacement, windshield fluid resiviour leaks, power window motors, dome override light, dead battery problems, I went thru 4 batteries in 5 years, it just kept going dead if I didnt use the vehicle for a couple days. I only have 72,000 miles on the vehicle now as of 12/19/2014. Lots of problems for a $ 50,000 truck. Ill never buy a chevy again.

26 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 05/15/2009

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. The contact stated that while applying the brakes at 55 mph, the brake and anti-lock brake warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. Simultaneously, the brake pedal fell farther into the floorboard than usual, causing an increase in the stopping distance. The contact shut off the engine and upon restarting, the warning lights were no longer illuminated. The vehicle had not been to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The failure mileage was 118,000 and the current mileage was 122000.

27 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/01/2005

I own a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche z66 2wd. There is a problem within the abs braking system. At this time the abs and brake light illuminates after a period of 3 to 5 miles of travel. The brake pressure when applying the brakes is sometimes very week and sometimes even goes all the way to the floor making it extremely limited to stop even at very short stopping distances. Again, this happens at various time while driving and since I use my vehicle to drop off and pick up my family and then off to work, I feel this is a very important issue to be addressed and a recall should be issued immediately to repair this problem. This is a very good truck and my family and I love it but it has a problem that is obviously from the manufacturer and has to be repaired to keep the family together. I have been to various dealers where I've had to pay to get this looked at and they all informed me that diagnostic test concluded the rotors and pads wear are at a very normal state and need no repairs or replacements. The problems lie withing the abs system and repair cost will be sever. Looking over the internet at various site, I found that this is a vary common problem with a lot of Avalanche owners, especially 2002 owners. Please help. I don't want to get rid of our truck over this.

28 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 10/18/2002

Dt: contact states he is having a problem with his abs. The brakes pulsate and they don't stop the vehicle. The consumer noticed the pulsation while driving at lower speeds but not as much as when he is traveling at higher speeds. This occurs during normal braking. This has been going on at some degree since he bought the car. It has gotten progressively worse. It is happening all of the time now. The brake light does not come on. There is also a grinding noise before this happens. The consumer is going to take the car into the dealer tomorrow. He has not yet talked to the manufacturer. The car has 22,000 miles on it. There has not been any kind of repair work done for the brakes.
