I was at a complete stop at a traffic light when my brake pedal sunk to the floor and my vehicle started to roll forward towards cross traffic. I pumped brake pedal but no effect. I shifted into neutral and was able to stop long enough to put vehicle in park. Called a tow to mechanic. Was told my brake line had rusted out. He fixed 2 lines. With in a week (5/8/15) I had another leak of brake fluid. Another tow to mechanic. He fixed another brake line. On 5/24/15 another brake line broke. Another tow. Mechanic is replacing the remaining 5 lines. All in all cost is over $1000 to fix.

10 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 10/02/2014

While leaving a funeral in near sweetwater TN, I applied the brakes and felt pressure and then the pedal dropped to the floor. My wife and two small children were riding with me. After pushing the brake pedal to the floor, I noticed I did have brakes but not power brakes. I pulled over and examined the problem and found leaking brake fluid coming from around the gas tank. With no choice, I had to drive the truck back to kentucky. Appr. 175 miles if not more in heavy traffic on I-75. I know trucks have problems and I know there is routine maintenance but I have never seen the amount of complaints that the brake lines have had on these trucks. I have owned chevy trucks my whole life and have never had a problem with the brake lines. Due to the seriousness of the issue and number of complaints, how is Chevrolet issuing a recall.

11 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 10/02/2014

I was travelling west on wendover avenue in greensboro, north carolina approximately 8:20 am on Thursday October 2, 2014. While travelling a traffic signal was turning red and I began slowing. As I was attempting to slow down the brake pedal continued to travel to the floor and the brake light warning and service brake system light came on. I was quickly closing in on the vehicle in front of me and reduced my speed by standing on the braked and using engine speed shifting from drive to 3rd to 2nd and then to first gear. I was able to stop within a foot of the car in front of me. After this I pulled over to inspect my vehicle. I located a blown brake line that was severely corroded on the drivers side along the frame of the vehicle. Brake fluid was leaking out. In addition, the other brake lines appear to be extremely corroded as well. This is a major concern considering brakes are such a critical component to safe driving. It appears the brake lines are not made for a suitable quality for such a critical system. The exhaust pipe, which is under the vehicle as well, is not corroded and is made out of suitable quality material. If there are other vehicles out there on the road with similar materials the results may be injurious or deadly. Please help to address and rectify this situation with Chevrolet.

12 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/20/2014

I use my Avalanche only in the summer to tow a small trailer in my community. I used it in the winters from 2004-2008. I was backing the truck up and applied my brakes and smelled smoke and my brake light went on. I looked under the truck and it was leaking brake fluid. I got down under the truck to get a better look and noticed the brake line was completely rusted through causing all the fluid to leak out. My wife drove the truck to the grocery store that morning and I am so thankful this happened in my driveway because the brakes were fine one minute and it only took a second for the fluid to come out. In seconds I did not have any brakes. This is the first truck I have owned and I am shocked that something like this could happen. Brake lines should be much stronger than what I have on the truck. This is not something that you check on a regular basis. I don't use this truck for off road, plowing, driving in the snow. This is supposed to be a strong vehicle that cost me $44,000 in 2004. I would have been killed if this happened while I was on the road.

13 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/05/2014

After applying pressure to brake pedal, the vehicle failed to stop and the brake pedal was to the floor. Once the truck coasted to a stop, we pulled to the side of the road and found brake fluid leaking underneath the truck. We had the truck towed to our local dealership. The dealership replaced all metal brake lines that left us with a bill of over $2,000 for parts and labor. The entire truck is in beautiful condition and rust free except for the faulty brake lines! gm should recall this issue.

14 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/03/2014

Driver's side front to back brake line corroded and leaked all brake fluid causing an inability to stop. The brake indicator light did not come on until all fluid was gone and normal braking ability was loss. Upon further inspection all brake lines are severely corroded.

15 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 08/25/2014

After making the 23. 7 mile commute to work driving on a parkway with a speed limit of 55 miles per hour that includes hills, I was entering into the parking lot at my workplace at approximately five miles per hour and when I applied the brake pedal the pedal went straight down to the floor and would not stop the truck. I then quickly applied the emergency parking brake and it stopped the truck. Approximately 30 minutes later I noticed a puddle of brake fluid next to my left front tire and a large puddle of brake fluid next to my left rear tire. That is when I looked under the vehicle and noticed the brake line had rusted apart.

16 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 08/01/2014

I was leaving work and traveling around 20 mph. I attempted to brake for a stop sign and the brake pedal went nearly all the way to the floor and braking was severly compromised, taking much longer than usual to stop. It was taken to a gm service shop (hallman's Chevrolet) where they indicated that my brake lines were corroded, one was leaking brake fluid, and all lines needed to be replaced. The vehicle had passed the state inspection 2-3 weeks prior to this event. At that time, I had told them that my brakes were acting abnormally. The dealership indicated that they do not check brake lines during an inspection. Cost to fix the issue was quoted at around $1700. 00.

17 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/29/2014

While pulling out of driveway, pressure was applied to the brakes to stop at the end of the driveway. The brake pedal immediately went straight to the floor with the alarm then coming on in the vehicle to service brakes. There was no resistance or stopping power to the brakes. Using the emergency brake the vehicle was stopped before it went across the street into the ditch. The vehicle was backed up into the driveway and a puddle of brake fluid was found under the drivers side door area of the vehicle. Upon inspection, it was noted that the metal high pressure brake lines had rusted and ruptured leaking brake fluid causing the failure.

18 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/24/2014

On the above listed date at approximately 0730 hours, I was running errands after getting off work and before returning home. I started to drive down a sloped road approaching a traffic light at a four way intersection. The traffic light turned red as I was approaching it and I applied the brakes while traveling at 30 mph. Upon application of the brakes, the pedal went straight to the floor with zero functioning of the brake system. The brake light then illuminated and a notification came across to "service brake system". I down shifted down from "d" to "3-2-1", all the while pumping the brakes. It wasnt until I reached around 5 mph that it seemed that the brakes had any affect, and I came to a stop in the middle of the intersection. Since I was roughly a mile from my house at this point I limped my truck home, mostly using gearing "2" and "1". I parked the truck, entered my house and informed my wife as to what happened. Then I returned to the truck to find a puddle of fluid under and around the drivers door. I checked the master cylinder reservoir and it was completely drained at this point. There is no doubt if someone would have been in front of me or coming through the intersection at the time this incident occurred I would have been involved in an accident. At no time prior to this have I had any indication of the brakes going bad, brake warning light or abs, soft brake pedal or fluid loss. It seems as if this happened all at once. The vehicle was then towed to a mechanics garage later on that day to be repaired.

19 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/19/2014

I was driving on i95 traveling at a speed of 60 mph when I tried to apply the brakes and the brake pedal went completely to the floor. I had absolutely no brakes. Lights on the dash board stated service brakes. Luckily there were not any cars directly in front of me. I was able to drift onto the side of the highway and waited for my vehicle to come to a stop. After coming to a stop, I noticed a large puddle of fluid under the driver side door. My brake line had ruptured. Evidently this is known problem with gm trucks and is a great safety hazard. I was very fortunate that my entire family was not in the car like the previous weekend. I took my vehicle to my mechanic and he informed me that all 4 brake lines were corroded. This should never happen on a part that is essential to stopping your vehicle. Gm claims that you still have brakes when this happens. That is totally not true. I had absolutely no brakes. Gm needs to take responsibility for this problem.

20 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 05/28/2014

Was driving around the block as I had just jump started the dead battery. As I approached a stop the brakes were applied and the truck kept rolling as the brakes were spongy. As I applied more pressure the pedal hit the floor. I narrowly missed hitting a car coming from the side street. I coasted the truck home and there was fluid pouring from the lines just behind the abs module. All the lines are severely rusted.

21 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 05/14/2014

While driving my truck in a curve I notice the vehicle was not responsive as I applied the brakes. The brake pedal went straight to the floor. I regained control of my vehicle I place the vehicle in the n drive attempting to let the vehicle coast to a stop. I did a maintenance check for low brake fluid, I found that the level was good. That's when I was informed that my brake line had broken. When the brake pedal was applied brake fluid was shooting out from the brake line. This was the third time that this has happen to me that my life and others has been endangered. The first incidence was a few years ago I went through a red light because I could not stop the vehicle, the second time was November 2013 and now this time. Although I purchased the vehicle used in 2006 with only 47,000 miles on it for this to occur three times is to often. I now have 150000 miles on my vehicle and cannot afford a new car or new car payment. Please look into to so that I and other lives will not be further endangered. Recall and do something about these brake lines breaking so that we are safe.

22 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 03/02/2014

I was approaching an intersection where the light was changing and when I applied the brakes, the pedal went to the floor and I couldn't slow down. I ended up going through the red light with my son in the car; luckily we didn't get struck. I had to utilize the emergency brake to stop on the shoulder of the road. I looked under the truck and saw brake fluid pouring out of a rusted brake line under the driver's side. I had to have the truck towed to a dealership. I had a full inspection on 12/23/13 at hudson Buick pontiac GMC in poughkeepsie, NY and asked them to specifically check the brakes, which they said were fine; I guess they don't check the lines during an inspection. I have read that this has occurred on several gm vehicles. Does someone have to die before there is some sort of action taken to correct this problem?.

23 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 01/04/2014

Corroded steel brake line developed a hole and leak of brake fluid. This led to inability to brake adequately to stop. All 4 brake lines need replaced due to severe corrosion. There appears to be a large number of complaints about these and similar gm vehicles experiencing brake line failures.

24 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 12/17/2013

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. The contact stated that the brake pedal became stuck to the floorboard while attempting to reverse. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic, who found that the brake lines were corroded and leaking brake fluid. The brake lines were replaced. The failure and current mileage was 59,353.

25 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 11/24/2013

Was hooking up my trailer to tow. Had my daughter step on the brakes to check the lights. The pedal went to the floor and alarm went off. Found brake fluid squirting onto the ground. Had to have all the brake lines replaced due to rust behind the drivers front wheel. Found out this is a common problem with this type and all the chevy trucks. All in the same area.

26 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 10/23/2013

When leaving the highway I applied the brakes and they immediately went to the floor, almost rear ending the truck ahead of me. I was able to limp the vehicle home using low gear and what I found out were the rear brakes. After getting home I looked underneath the front end and noticed brake fluid dripping from the front of the truck. The brake lines were horribly rusted. I can't believe in today's age that steel lines would be used when stainless lines are available. The entire brake line system will need replaced.

27 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/21/2013

While backing up to connect to a travel trailer brake pedal went to floor and fluid leak developed from underside truck. Limped truck to repair station and have been quoted a price of $1,300 to replace all brake lines. According to shop owner, all of the brake lines appeared to be compromised due to premature rust and were unsafe.

28 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/07/2013

I was parked in my drive way, when I released my parking brakes and began to take off. When I applied my brake pedal, I heard a small bursting sound and my pedal went to the floor board of the truck. Luckily I wasn't driving at a faster speed. I pulled the truck over to the side of the road. I looked back onto the pavement. I saw a puddle of brake fluid. I immediately entered the truck and tried to press the brake pedeal and it hit the floor, which meant I had no brakes to drive my vehicle. It was a scary to think I could have been driving down the highway with my wife and kids in the truck. I lifted my truck on the rear and perform an inspection. I noticed the black rubber hose had a split in it and the other brake lines were severly corroded. I bought a new rubber and installed it (banjo union-in the center rear) and then began to try pressing the brakes again to see if the problem was solve. Next, I saw more fluid dripping out of driver side metal brake line. I couldn't believe it!! I still could not drive my truck because the rusted driver side brake line had a hole. I wish the delaership tech would have brought this to my attention when I had my brakes and rotors installed. Very dangerous situation!! after reading multiple post on various websites about gm position regarding the rusted lines, I am not going to buy another gm vehicle if I decide to trade this one.

29 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/07/2013

After replacing the rear calipers, attempted to bleed the brakes to remove air from the system. While pumping up the system pressure, heard a loud "pop" and the brake pedal went to the floor. Discovered brake fluid leaking under the frame rail underneath the driver's door. Brake lines are completely rusted. Though I currently reside in a salt belt state, the first 6 years of this vehicle's life was in az. Gm needs to correct this issue before someone is hurt or killed.

30 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 08/15/2013

On 8/15/13 in the evening hours I was traveling in my 2002 chevy Avalanche with my wife and daughter to a freinds house when I went to stop for a turn. As I applied the brake I felt a little pressure then heard pop noise and the peddle went to the floor with no warning and the truck would not stop thankfully there was no one stopped to make the same turn. I was able to get slowed enough futher down the road at a turn around and got stopped. I got out to look at what had happend and noticed brake fluid leaking from under the truck on the driver side apon futher investagation I found the metal brake lines running from the master cylinder to the abs module on the frame rail corroded severly, about half way down the line I found a large pin hole blew out the side and was leaking, at the time it happened I got no warning lights just brake to the floor. The vehicle has 150000 miles on it and for the last 5 years has mainly been garage kept avaraging under 1000 miles a year the last 5 years. I have owned it since 2002. I keep this vehicle very clean, I am in a salt belt state and if I drive it in the winter I always wash under it frequently. I feel this is a direct manufacured problem I also own a old 77 pick up and it has the original brake lines in it and have hardly any corrosion on them. In researcing for new brake lines I noticed alot of complaints with this issue and finally got here seeing a case opened way back in 2011. This problem is not going to go away and gm needs to address it before someone gets killed. After talking to my local chevy dealer there is not even a prebent brake line option to purchase. Years ago chevy issued a recal for the tailgate cables in a quick fashion not sure why a brake problem that is more serious is taking so long to correct.

31 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 08/05/2013

Traveling appx 35mph applied brakes to make left turn, peddle went to the floor. No trafic in front of me or we would have hit them. Brake fluid pouring from under truck, under driver side door area. Brake line ruptued due to rust. Local machinic replaced ruptured line. I inspected all line few months later and found they were also in bad shape due to rust. Took to local gm dealer $550 to replace all brake line. Gm sould have picked up cost for not using non-corrosive brake line. Very luck me and my kid did't get hurt.

32 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/25/2013

My son was going to the store and when he applied the brake the pedal went to the floor and he had no brakes. After he parked the truck he noticed a puddle of fluid under the drivers side in front of the rear wheel. When I returned home I filled the brake reservoir I had my wife push the brake peddle and I found the leak in the rusty brake line.

The failure mileage was 150,000.

35 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 04/20/2013

Started driving and the brake pedal suddenly went all the way down to the floor. The vehicle eventually stopped and a warning light finally turned on to "service brake system". I got out of the vehicle to check and see if the brake fluid was low and saw that the brake lines were rusted. Underneath the vehicle, I was able to see brake fluid leaking at a consistent rate. Prior from this happening, there were no warning lights or alerts.
